GabriellaG54, forty-four percent of the UK's fresh, chilled and frozen food comes through the Channel ports from the EU. As has been stated and acknowledged even in government documents in recent days, that should Britain leave the European Union without a customs agreement then severe disruption will occur through those posts. That is what faces everyone in this country while a "no deal" prospect remains on the table.

The world is made up of large nations and trading blocks that hold sway in location for large scale manufacturing, the higher service industries and many professions.

The above is the truth of the Brexit situation. However, those supporting Brexit without a customs agreement or any agreement whatsoever still do not believe what they witness in front of their own eyes, preferring instead to wave the Union Jack and sing "Rule Britania" with many on this forum carrying out that from the privilege of their retired armchairs with nothing to lose, or so they hope.

petra, keep on believing in Brexit against all the gathering evidence of what really is happening in Britains manufacturing and other industries in advance of a "no deal" Brexit.

This " debate" sums up how bad the referendum was for UK. People are entrenched in their Leave or Remain bunkers hurling "facts" at one another. Unfortunately the future is largely unknown! Instead of offering the electorate a clear situation on which to vote we were asked to vote on promises which might or might not be kept as they were not in the gift of the promiser to give!
My gut instinct was to remain. It still is but, like the majority of voters of either persuasion , I cannot know if my reasons were right or wrong. Too many lies, spins, unknown quantities for anyone to be certain.

GabriellaG54, can I suggest you review your recent posts on this thread as they are nothing short of a no substance, unintelligible rant. They give great credence to those who believe that leave campaigns case is now without any real substance in the light of all that is now happening in manufacturing and other industries due to this rediculas Brexit nonsense.

I am saddened that what should be a sensible debate with people offering their reasons, preferably backed up with facts, turns into winning or losing. I think we should be above such childish behaviour. This is important, it affects the future of our grandchildren, we should be sharing opinions and information in a civilised way, not hurling abuse.

I think it's quite funny in sick sort of way. May has used the 'no deal' threat as a 'negotiating tool' for so long. Businesses have even been silenced from talking about the consequences with Non Disclosure Agreements. But now she's faced with the reality of 'no deal' if Parliament won't sanction her WA and she knows that it would be an absolute disaster for the UK she's running round like a headless chicken trying to blackmail Parliament into passing her deal by allowing businesses to tell the country how dreadful it would be.

If the Cooper/Boles amendment is passed and Parliament takes no deal off the table but her WA still doesn't get passed she's going to be in some bother, isn't she?

Of course, she has the option of asking for an extension to A50, but she's have to have a good reason for that, like a General election or a People's Vote, before the EU27 would agree to it. And quite frankly, I think that neither a GE or a PV would offer any clarity as there is a strong danger of another hung Parliament or an indecisive PV result.

Or she could revoke A50; which would be humiliating for her (though she doesn't really seem to mind humiliation) and wouldn't completely undo the damage of the last 2+ years but would be best for the economy.

I dont mind Leavers wallowing in their love in and celebrating pulling up the drawbridge with a greasy meal and a pint at Weatherspoons, but I do resent them insisting on taking 2/3 of the population that didn’t vote for this sh*tshow with them. They think it’s all going to be marvellous but they have absolutely no certainty in that. I’d like them to point to one benefit they personally will see out of all this complete mess. The U.K. is in political meltdown and we look like a complete bunch of numpties to those outside.

Thanks Maizie I understand now. It is gagging orders about what the government has contracted companies to do in preparation for a no deal. Not really about the consequences of no deal. Might make sense and is probably standard with government contracts.

Just as long as they don't try to gag other companies saying how worried they are.
