So-called ‘migrant crisis’

Hope haven’t missed a thread on the appalling public reaction to this humanitarian problem. In particular, as the papers point out today, these 200+ crossing the channel are about the roll of a small primary school, over two months. What crisis?
And then, they are people whose livlihoods have been destroyed in their own countries by destructive military action, in which our arms trade has played no small part. Who do we think we are to behave like this?
What evidence is there that these refugees intend to ‘live on benefits’, beyond a brief resettlement period? or that those coming ashore on the Kent coast are any threat to anyone? I have seen none.
These crossings are of course very dangerous but public opinion countenances many more dangerous activities. And if loss of life was a prime concern, why remove patrol boats from areas where the problem is far greater?
International movement of peoples in response to major economic and political upheaval is a massive problem. Not to be solved by this sort of populist anger.

I think you would soon be flagged up as suspect, if, as an Iranian you attempted to buy an inflatable in Calais or boulogne.

They hate and detest our nation

Ellen, would it be possible please to clarify who are the " they" in this statement and how you know this ?

Much appreciated.

No Petra I don't mean the Eastern Mediterranean. I mean the countries if the Middle and Far East. Why don't African Muslims make for Muslim countries?

I would imagine that you have to have a job to show that you can support yourself. I would think it's ny on impossible.

GabriellaG54 Wed 02-Jan-19 16:33:57

Nigh on impossible wink

I knew that didn't look right grin

oldbatty Wed 02-Jan-19 16:38:27

so the entire population of Iraq and Iran hate and detest our nation

How thick are you?

oldbatty Wed 02-Jan-19 16:39:41

Nonnie, yes I wondered about Pakistan too.

Jane10 Wed 02-Jan-19 16:41:08

oldbatty ca' canny! You're obviously disappointed that not everyone agrees with you or necessarily shares your beliefs on the matter but that doesn't make us 'thick'! It's an extremely complex area. There are no easy answers.

oldbatty Wed 02-Jan-19 16:43:28

NO excuse me ,but to assume the entire population of two massive countries hate and detest the UK is thick.

oldbatty Wed 02-Jan-19 16:44:10

It is complex, worrying and has been handled very badly by so many people.

Nonnie Wed 02-Jan-19 16:59:44

petra I disagree. I think those selling the boats will know that whoever is buying them may well be doing so for trafficking reasons but they are still selling them. Even if the Iranians didn't buy the boat themselves they could easily get someone else to do it for them. It was on the BBC I heard they were doing this, I didn't invent it.

Nonnie Wed 02-Jan-19 17:00:46

oldbatty glad I am not alone. The other countries I could understand.

mcem Wed 02-Jan-19 17:37:10

ellan you referred to a group of people on another thread, using that wide-reaching term "they" without being specific about their origins. Is this a more honest approach or are you just being less 'subtle' this time? You didn't come back to clarify that post, did you?
That post was deleted as being racist so can't help wondering............

oldbatty Wed 02-Jan-19 18:08:59

Possibly you have been treated by a medic of Iranian or Iraqi heritage, bet you weren't so sniffy then.

notanan2 Wed 02-Jan-19 18:11:48

I think you would soon be flagged up as suspect, if, as an Iranian you attempted to buy an inflatable in Calais or boulogne.

By who?
You can buy boats on gumtree and ebay. Its like buying a car. Noone cares who they sell their used car to.

The racist and bigoted comments on this thread are distressing. Heaven help us all if older women can take such a negative and in fact, bigoted, view towards entire nations. "They hate and detest us" - what all of them? Those kind of comments feel like transference or projection to me.

mcem Wed 02-Jan-19 18:42:19

I agree Iam and suggest we make our feelings very clear to such posters either by continuing to address them directly or reporting each and every one, time and time again until GNHQ deletes them or realises that many of us seriously object to them!

oldbatty Wed 02-Jan-19 18:48:20

Please Gabriella, tell us about your experiences with people from the Sudan? You seem to have some knowledge, don't hold back.

Oldwoman70 Wed 02-Jan-19 18:53:32

Just because someone expresses concern over ILLEGAL immigrants does not make them racist. I have said, several times, that I have no objection to anyone coming to UK, all I ask is that they do so legally.

Just thinking of the practicalities of being an illegal in a foreign country, not speaking or reading the language.
If they did, why not apply for asylum in France.
Let's assume that they can do neither. What website do they search? Where have they got enough euros to pay for it?
I assume they have cleared their homeland bank accounts out.
Now comes the tricky part.
'If' the inflatable is in a marina luck is on their side. If it's in someone's garden/garage they will need a trailer, then they will need a car to transport the trailer.
It's not as easy as contacting 'John' on eBay or gumtree.
