MP Anna Soubry has criticised the police for failing to intervene after she was verbally abused by protesters outside Parliament.

The Conservative ex-minister was accused "of being a Nazi", while being interviewed on the BBC News channel.

She called for the protesters, who were wearing yellow vests, to be prosecuted under public order legislation.

Commons Speaker John Bercow said he was worried about a "pattern" of women MPs and journalists being targeted.

Raising the issue in the House of Commons, Labour's Mary Creagh said the "really vile, misogynistic thuggery" that had been seen was not an isolated incident.

She accused far-right groups of re-playing Monday's clip and others like it on social media sites to "raise revenue for their trolling activities".

Ms Soubry, the pro-European MP for Broxtowe who supports another Brexit referendum, was subjected to verbal abuse while being interviewed by the BBC's Simon McCoy.

Do share the 'evidence' with us, paddyann

paddyann Sun 13-Jan-19 14:09:40

Apparently there is evidence that the hecklers who "harassed" Anna Soubry was all a set up.She knew them and knew when they were going to do it .
I wouldn't be surprised if it were true ...

We were told by a taxi driver shortly after the referendum that he'd no idea what the EU was but he watched the Eurovision Song Contest and decided to vote leave because these bloody foreigners didn't vote for us.

Eloethan I wasn't being serious note the grin

Eloethan Sun 13-Jan-19 00:17:53

Nonnie He wasn't a London taxi driver. He lived a few miles from Colchester but saw himself as an expert on all things London - in fact on all things full stop.

Labaik Sat 12-Jan-19 19:33:41

Maybe Anna Soubry changed her mind about the EU when Johnson changed his....

Nonnie Sat 12-Jan-19 17:03:15

Must be London cabbies, the ones round here have very poor English so we don't talk much. grin

lemongrove Sat 12-Jan-19 16:49:28

Am A retired primary teacher. Social media, the press and our so called politicians all incapable of polite intellectual discussion, no one listens just shout and speak above each other. Reminds me of a children’s playground. Sorry didn’t mean that as it was an insult to the many children it was a privilege for me to teach. Our so called elite need to look to the youth of the country and maybe learn something. Manners would be a good start.

I also had a taxi driver going on in this way all the way to MAN airport. I think he wanted to get into a 'Hate foreigners' discussion and that I would enjoy the discussion and perhaps give him a big tip.
When he realised that I was not against foreigners at all, actually I live abroad and am a foreigner there myself

He soon changed the subject.

Oh dear Eloethan I wonder if he does that with all his passengers!

I hope he took you to your destination and didn't dump you in the wilderness if you disagreed with him!

Eloethan Sat 12-Jan-19 14:08:46

I had to take a taxi from my Mum's house to the station yesterday (I usually take the bus but I needed to get home earlier and the buses are few and far between).

The taxi driver deluged me with his opinions - Colchester was now full of "rubbish" moved out from London by councils, London has changed so much - full of foreigners, crooks and drug dealers, the EU is a waste of time, Britain was great once and will be again once we leave the EU, the EU is scared stiff that we are leaving, they won't manage without us, etc, etc, etc. I had not initiated this torrent and tried my best, in as polite a way as possible, to question many of his contentions but he was definitely on a roll.

I am not an ardent remainer - there are many things about the EU that I don't like - but I voted to stay as I didn't trust the alternative and many of the people who were putting it forward. The sense of superiority and general apparent dislike of humanity that people like this taxi driver display make me even more concerned that such haughtiness and complacency is in danger of leading this country into the wilderness.

maxdecatt
Is that in reference to a post, or d'you just like writing the word?

By the way, does anyone know when Anna Soubry changed her mind about the eu.
Back in 2011 her opinion of them was the same as most leavers?

Anniebach Sat 12-Jan-19 13:50:42

Anti semetism, rape and murder threats started before the referendum, it started when Corbyn became leader

maxdecatt Sat 12-Jan-19 13:44:54

Bollocks.

lemongrove Thu 10-Jan-19 20:32:34

grin

Jalima1108 Thu 10-Jan-19 20:30:10

ah, yes smile

POGS Thu 10-Jan-19 20:28:27

A lot of the nastiness started prior to the Referendum and political discourse came knocking at a certain moment in time in my mind.

The era of a ' kinder, gentler politics'.

Jalima1108 Thu 10-Jan-19 20:05:18

I think, on the whole, we are a pretty tolerant nation but Brexit seems to have brought out the worst in a lot of us.

varian Thu 10-Jan-19 20:03:18

I hope I am still a tolerant person. I am a Liberal Democrat and believe in an open tolerant society, which I think we had in this country before this brexit madness took hold.

However I cannot stand by and watch our country being consumed by the worst sort of prejudice and delusions. For patriots who really care about our country's future, any kind of brexit is intolerable.

Jalima1108 Thu 10-Jan-19 19:52:14

What has happened to our once tolerant society since this brexit nonsense reared its ugly head?
I don't know varian - were you a very tolerant person too until Brexit?

Jalima1108 Thu 10-Jan-19 19:48:17

ilove is there an example of these fascist thugs surrounding a male MP?
the other puzzling thing is why they called Anna S a Nazi
confused

varian Thu 10-Jan-19 19:47:46

They are obviously right-wing thugs who particularly target women, but also see the likes of left-wing Remainer Owen Jones as a legitimate target.

What has happened to our once tolerant society since this brexit nonsense reared its ugly head?

Jalima1108 Thu 10-Jan-19 19:46:38

Good post POGS

Nastiness, thuggery and loutish behaviour is not confined to any particular group in politics.

Ilovecheese Thu 10-Jan-19 19:38:39

I don't think I suggested that they were from left or right, was more thinking about whether they would try to bully men in the same way as women. Since then I have seen a video of the journalist Owen Jones being surrounded by the same thugs as Anna Soubry, maybe the thugs are not as sexist as I thought!
