Did anyone watch Jess Phillips comments on the £30,000 minimum earnings as an acceptable precursor to allowing immigrants to work in this country?
I think it was during the debate on immigration to a largely empty house. She deserved a larger audience.
Actually PMQT is such rubbish that making a speech to a very empty chamber where you can get your points across is much more effective as it is soon all over all the types of media.
I’ve been following Jess Philips for a while, she’s a good constituency MP, works hard generally and I like her approach to politics. I’ve never heard such a ridiculous criticism as “she hates men”, what basis is there for that statement.
None whatsoever Iam well no rational basis that is. But then I’ve never understood the misogyny on GN and especially that directed towards younger women.
I disagree that she is not anti men based on a number of times I have heard her speak. It is fine to campaign for women but she doesn't have to be anti men to do that. Listening to her you could believe that all men are beasts and all women are angels.
Always put off by shouty people, it doesn't improve the message and often does the opposite imo. One of the sad things about PMQs
Chrsitopher Chope is a loathsome example of the kind of men that Jess Phillips is up against. She doesn't hate men, she hates men like him,men who put women down, the white middle class grey suits that run this country, and I for one think we need more people, male and female like Jess Phillips. I wish she was my MP, not the grey suited, grey haired, middle aged complacent male we are saddled with. She has passion and anger, and I think she does well restraining herself as she does given what she faces each day. This bloody Brexit business has swept a lot of things under the carpet, and which ever side of the debate one is on it is appalling that many important things are not being debated, not being dealt with as we are engulfed with the most ineffective government in living memory. Back benchers must be frustrated beyond belief.
So you base your views on her on no doubt highly edited excerpts of her speeches with absolutelt no regard to what she actually does - you know does - her record, her experience, her wide campaigning? And if she didn’t shout: she would not be heard anyway- one persons shouty is another persons passion. Meanwhile ever so polite and unshouty JRMbelieves tbat abortions for raped children are wrong. Well tbat makes me shout
I can only base my opinions on what I have heard her say. Yes, heard not read. Whole sentences which could not possibly have been edited.
Gill brilliant post. It’s so easy and frankly intellectually lazy to label her as a man hater. Sometimes when I wish she’d presented something slightly differently I remind myself that if she changed she’d be just like some other high profile polished non shouty women MPs who have zilch experience of working with people with the sort of problems JP has encountered and care even less - for example Liz Truss and Amber Rudd spring to mind. Have you heard about AR’s latest DWP lying propaganda film which I believe has now been removed from the website? Mind you; she didn’t shout: just lied so that’s all right then.
Ooohhhh whole sentences give the whoe ontext of a speech.- ridiculous. And these selected sentences give you the measure of the woman on which to base your judgements? God help us
maryelize it is 'intellectually lazy* to be rude about people who a different, though valid. opinion to you. You don't have the only opinion and not a better opinion. I have probably seen things you haven't and you will have seen things I haven't. We are both entitled to our opinion but trying to put other posters down is unnecessary and shows a lack simple kindness. This is not the first time I have seen you do this.
There is no reason for her to shout or to by unpleasant and no reason for you to do so either.
Nonnie listen to the speech I’m talking about. Judge her on that.
Anja I'm not judging her, I simply said I wasn't a fan because of her attitude to men. She can do all the good things too but the evidence of what I have seen and heard is that she hates men. I have not suggested she doesn't do good things. She is shouty!
Not shouty on this link at all. Also I disagree that she ‘hates’ men. She is an advocate for women and that naturally brings her into contact with many hateful men.
I’m quite sure she takes other men as she finds them,
To say Jess doesn’t like men because she speaks out against bullies is ,for me, like claiming Sarah Chanpion hates British Pakistani men because she spoke out about the British Pakistani men in the grooming gang in Rotherham
well summed up anniebach. Dismissing a female MP as a man hater is the stuff of red top tabloids and I really would have hoped not to read that on here.......but then again, there are some that think that Tommy Robinson is a good chap so what do I know eh? I assume Nonnie that you wouldn't have approved of the suffragetes with their 'shouty' behaviour?
She did make an unacceptable comment about knifing another MP - can’t remember which one.
The knife comment was when asked about her disagreements with Corbyn , she replied I would knife him from the front not the back,
It is rather an unfortunate comment but it is a metaphorical phrase that is used quite frequently about 'backstabbing MPs'. So what she was saying was that she would be upfront in her disagreements with Corbyn rather than working slyly behind his back.
Fair enough. I know what she means.
There was a news item on our local news yesterday about a family; mother is British as are the children but father is not. He is going to be deported because he does not earn £62,000? pa to support his family. He has a job and supports his family at present- so if he is deported who will support them?
Who makes these decisions? Loopy or not?
I can't find the link but I am sure this is correct.
Apologies - I got the story slightly wrong:
The father does not have £62,500 in savings to prove that he could support his family if he failed to get a job in the UK. He is a software engineer and gave up his job in Canada to join his family in the UK.
Great post Gill.
Gill I didn't Dismissing a female MP as a man hater is the stuff of red top tabloids and I really would have hoped not to read that on here I didn't 'dismiss' anything I said I wasn't a fan. Please don't interpret what I say, just read what I said.
The suffragettes were in an entirely different situation, they didn't have TV to be interviewed on. There really is no comparison. She has no need to shout and I don't like it. I said that I don't like it, I didn't say anyone else had to like it, I don't like people shouting, simple.
Annie I don't a problem about her speaking out against men who do bad things, my problem is when she decries men in general and I have heard her do it three times. I applaud anyone who speaks out about bad things, I just think it should be even handed. Some of the things she has said about men would have been challenged if a man said them about a woman. She knows how to grab a headline, that's her job.
Nonnie you did say she hates men , can you give a link to at least one of your allegations that she hates men ?
How about the substance of this speech?
Why are we getting side-tracked? We could argue about a past speech for ever, but that’s done and dusted.
I’ve posted a link and if you scroll down it just a wee bit you’ll hear what she said and, incidentally, the way she said it.
No I can't Annie it isn't something I have read, as I think I already said, it was what I heard her saying. I clearly remember shouting at the television because she made me very cross. I reiterate that this is nothing to do with anything else she has done, it is my experience of what she actually said. And I still don't like shouty people which includes her!
Nonnie did you open my Link?
Since she once related, with great amusment, her comment to Diane Abbott to "fuck off", she will no doubt have fans on here and elsewhere. Whether you like DA or not, I think it was rude (especially showing such glee about her behaviour) and I feel fairly sure that it would not have been thought acceptable if DA had spoken to JP in such a way.
I agree with many of the points that Jess Phillips makes but, on balance, I don't really like her.
