Luciano Berger is facing a vote of no confidence by her local
Constituancy party because she has criticised Corbyn .
McDonald said she has not been targeted because of anti semetism but because she has refused to rule out quitting labour, if there was any elements of anti semetism in Labour the party would deal with it, full stop
Luciana is being supported by Yvette Cooper and Ed Miliband.
Who is next ?
Or they could be honest and campaign as ‘The Communist Party
Firstly they couldn't because they are not Communist (although some people seem to have no understanding of the terms they throw around and constantly misuse them)
If someone is threatening to leave the party I can see that it makes absolute sense to de-slect her. After all why should the voter vote for a Labour candidate, only to find after she is elected. she has shifted to another party?
When I see a bird that quacks like a duck, walks like a duck, has feathers and web feet and associates with ducks I certaintly am going to assume it is a duck
The Labour Party was brought into being by the trade unions so the name Labour Party must be kept by those who support the trade unions and collective endeavour.
Apart from that, to have any chance of success a breakaway party is going to need more people than the current numbers of disaffected Labour MPs and will
there fore have to attract disaffected Conservative MPs who are not happy with the extreme right wing of their party.
The two groups (or more) would have to choose a name that would satisfy all.
I doubt the likes of Frank Fields would , some don’t like the far right in the Tory party, some don’t like the far left of the Momentum party
It seems the right wingers who managed to run the party under Blair are unwilling to let go. A party is not the MPs in parliament, they are the servants of the party not its directors. The sooner some realise this the better. As for Corbyn not supporting the Labour Party, he has never threatened to leave the party and has always made his personal views clear, if his views were not liked people wouldn't have voted for him.
As for a new party it has been tried before without success.
Corbyn, a servant ?
Has Kate Hoey threatened to leave the party ? , she has been a Labour MP for 30 years
Frank Field lost a vote of no confidence so had to resign, a Labour MP for 40 years, is he more suited to the Tory party?
If Kate Hoey's local party have voted to deselect her I can't see that I should challenge them on that. It is surely just democratic practice. They did so when she voted with the government.
I don't know whether Frank Field or Kate Hoey are thinking about joining this breakaway party.
Nobody has suggested that Frank Field should join the Tory party.
Kate Hoey's local party did not agree with her stance on Brexit.
But Kate Hoey was honest, unlike Corbyn who wanted out but was not honest, he took a holiday instead
I'm sure it has been posted many times on GN that MPs should represent the views of their constituents and not their own.
Oh come on Grandad, I doubt there is a single Labour MP who hasn't been linked to some revolt or objection or separatist group over the last few years.
What do you expect when you elect a leader who has a history of consistently voting against his own party, how many times, 1, 10 , 100 times? No, 428 times in all. 7 times he voted with the Conservatives against his own party.
The actions against Luciana Berger, seem very close to anti-semitism. Oh, what a surprise!
We have all witnessed over the last many months reports that a number of Labour Party MPs are planning to break away from the party and form a new centre-left group in parliament. However, although some MPs seem to have "no qualms" in regard to having their names linked to the breakaway reports, they have never had "the real guts" to carry out their threat.
Linked to the above are the reports that several of the largest trade unions are becoming increasingly frustrated (by way of their National executives and General Secretaries) with the state of the parliamentary Labour party and the continuous "antics" of a minority of Labour MPs bringing the whole party and broader movement into disrepute.
In that, it is being seen that the action of Jenny Formby this week in stating in very blunt terms to the Labour Party national executive and parliamentary party the true realities of the anti-semitism allegations within the party was a major sign of that frustration and dwindling support among the rank and file and major unions.
Therefore in the above, the constituency Labour parties may well feel that they have no alternative but to act against those MPs which have had their names linked to various outbreaks of disloyalty to the party structure and it's policies.
The questions to those MPs are clear in being, do they support the Party policies as set out by the party conference? Do they support the democratic election of Jeremy Corbyn as the Parliamentary Party leader? Do they intend to retain the Labour whip in parliament and remain within the party for the duration of this parliament?
Any Labour MP should be able to answer the above questions with a clear and concise YES. if the cannot do that, then their constituency party will have little option but to deselect them.
And that's the way it should be.
Two no confidence motions against Luciana Berger after she campaigned against anti semitism have been with drawn.
The local, party had announced the meeting will not take place and the motions have been withdrawn by the members who proposed them,
Tom Watson has now called for Liverpool Wavertree constituency to be suspended - describing their behaviour as intolerable.
In a letter to general secretary Jennie Formby he wrote -
‘It is clear to me that Luciana Berger is being bullied’
Grandad, how sweetly naive. Every MP will say 'yes' to every question asked and then do whatever they want. It is what they have been doing since Jeremy Corbyn became the leader of the Labour party.
We have seen so much infighting, in groups forming and splitting, best mates falling out and the total chaos that rules in the Labour party, Nobody knows what it stands for, what policies it really has and which clique will be flavour of the month from one day to another.
As for its leader, I am reminded of the Duke of Plaza-Toro in Gilbert and Sullivan's 'The Gondoliers ^ he lead his army from behind, he found it less exciting^.
The suggestion that MPs have to toe the party line or be deselected gives me the chills. That isn't a broad church, its a dictatorship.
Luciana Berger has been subjected to bullying and anti semitism. So has Margaret Hodge. it stinks. Is it any wonder that the LP isn't streets ahead of the incompetent divisive and hopeless government?
MOnica, it seems anti semetism was the cause of the now withdrawn vote of no confidence in Luciana
It seems to me that in the present economy it is wrong that any MP should expect to have a job for life. In the real world people are made redundant for many reasons. Perhaps we would have a better government if MPs were subject to the same pressures.
Anniebach I adore your sense of humour!
This post, early up thread had to be the most amusing on GN - so witty!
‘Whilst I am having a tea break let’s bring the thread back on topic
Who is next on the hit list ?’
Yep, here it is - reported just now in The Guardian:
‘A no-confidence motion in the Labour MP Luciana Berger has been withdrawn and a meeting to discuss her future has been cancelled after it emerged that one of her key opponents within the local party called her a “disruptive Zionist” ‘
*.Urmstongran” thank you?
trisher. Why are people made redundant?
trisher MPs do not have a job for life they just have a job until the next election. If at the next election Luciana Berger's electorate vote against her she will be out.
At elections we vote for someone to represent us until the next election. She is a representative not a delegate.
In case you do not know the difference a representative having got electoral support makes their own decisions about how to vote, based on their party allegiances and wishes of their electorate. A delegate votes as told to by their party, and if they are lucky, electorate
Thanks Urmstongran. There isn’t any way of misunderstanding or reframing of that classic - “disruptive Zionist” as a description of Luciana B
I haven’t seen redundancy proposed as a means of getting rid of MPs who don’t toe the party line. Redundancy when the post still exists would equal unfair dismissal wouldn’t it?
