Labour witch-hunt has started

I have an Irish background trisher but none of us sang IRA songs or would have anything to do with them, despite being Irish Catholics, we saw them for what they were, merciless brutal killers.
I had a great time thanks, and plenty of music but not in folk clubs, or any campfire singing come to that.

I worked in London, round the corner from 2 IRA bombings, one being the Tower of London and the other in a building just yards away. How anyone can applaud anything to do with the IRA I just cannot understand. I had an Irish Catholic Step Mother by the way, who found the IRA and its sympathisers abhorrent!!!!

I'm from an Irish Catholic family too. We had loads of records by The Dubliners, The Chieftains, and such like many of which would be classed as rebel songs. As someone who has lived in Birmingham all my life and was here at the terrible time of the Birmingham bombings (my younger sisters knew some of the people who were killed as one of the pubs was their favourite haunt) there was no sympathy for the IRA in our family. We just like Irish music in general.

There are plenty of good Irish songs that have nothing to do with the IRA or rebels.
An Irish club that we went to had karioke before karioke!?

KatyK what was the one about Malibar or some such exotic place? I can’t bring it to mind.

You have such pride in being a defender of the IRA , did you rejoice when the two little boys were murdered in the Warrington bombing, or the unborn child in the Enniskillen murders.

I hope it’s your devotion to Corbyn that makes you defend the murders and not your genuine belief that these murders were justified , they were not, as the murders on Bloody Sunday in Derry were not.

Not for me either trisher singing rousing rebel songs on the floor with a can of Carlsberg or similar! I liked Northern Soul much better. In a club. With a bar.

I too am from an Irish catholic family. My grandfather, father and 2 uncles, 1 great uncle and a cousin were professional soldiers and another 4 uncles, 1 great uncle and cousin served during the 2 world wars. 3 of them died for their country.

None of them would have done other than condemn the IRA and all it's violence. I also knew another Irish soldier who was seriously injured and disabled on one of the London bombings.

Many of them, like my mother learnt the Fenian songs at her grandmothers knee. Singing the songs does not mean supporting the cause. Why should the devil have all the good tunes?

I too read the revelations about Corbyn in the Sunday papers.

Apart from the really hilarious details, were some telling details. During the 4 years of his first marriage, he did not read a single book, presumably he hasn't read any since.

His agent resigned because he was so unreliable and disorganised. He frequently left his second wife and children standing for hours because he had forgotten he was due to meet them or found something more important to do. Even when his wife was in labour and the birth imminent, he was busy on the hospital phone chasing up leaflet distributions.

He has no interests at all beyond politics and hates people who are successful, no matter how well earned their success.

I regularly went to folk clubs in the sixties, great atmospheres, wonderful music. I have friends who supported the republican ideal of a United Ireland, then friends who were born inNorthern Ireland, some but not all, Catholic. I remember the black bin liners flying from lampposts in Ireland north and south, to mark the deaths in the hunger strikes.
Life moves on, no one wants to return to border crossings, they’d soon have paramilitaries of every persuasion running crime from them.
I’m not worried thatJC sang rebel sings in his youth. I worried he’s stuck in that I’ll informed rebel phase, that he hasn’t devolved or broadened his thinking about complex issues

He said last year in a visit to Belfast he supported a united Ireland, when questioned he said if he becomes PM he would not seek a border poll unless there was a demand for it. The Unionists were concerned, little wonder , he should not have said he supported it

I always wonder if his mother despaired of him.

Urmstongran It's not a either or situation you know. I was clubbing with the best. Probably before your time but if you really are Urmston I remember the Twisted Wheel in Manchester.
As for deaths I don't approve of any of them. I do understand the desire for a united Ireland. I do understand the frustration and the terrible situation of catholics denied civil rights in N. Ireland and how marching to achieve them resulted in British soldiers shooting innocent civilians. As for the actions and involvement of the RUC over the years it was completely unacceptable, but largely unreported.
Listening to discussions about how business is conducted across the border it really is difficult to see any justification for maintaining it.

Could it be that some in NI want to remain in the U.K.
