RosieL I disagree, I think there will be a national sigh of relief and the whole debacle will be taught in history lessons in years to come so that such stupidity will never happen again. However, if the unforgivable happens and we leave that will also be taught in schools as the reason for the countries disastrous decline.

In September, Centre for European Reform research claimed that Brexit was costing the UK economy an enormous £500 million a week. The research suggested that the UK economy was 2.5% smaller at that point and public finances were taking the £26 billion a year hit.

www.cer.eu/in-the-press/how-much-has-brexit-cost-so-far-uk-has-lost-lot-cash-referendum

Do you remember the lie on the bus? £350m/week? Of course we all know now that was not true. Our net weekly contribution to the EU was far less, (less than our subsidy to NI) and for that we got the many benefits of EU membership.

So, in the last two years we have spent at least £500m/week on this brexit nonsense. What a waste of everyone's time and money. We need to wake up and stop this madness ASAP. Revoke Article 50 now.

One of my Grandsons lives in Oban and he sent me this Twitter which is on the board at his college.

Can anybody explain to this English lass, how can a English dominated Partliament object to Scotland having a greater say over its own affairs? When it is exactly the same reasons being given by Gov for leaving the EU, saying they don’t like decisions being imposed by other countries. He asks why are we so two faced?

Urmstongran Thu 14-Feb-19 19:46:07

How about this petition started mid January?

Petition
Leave the EU without a deal in March 2019

We are wasting billions of pounds of taxpayers money trying to negotiate in a short space of time.

Leaving the EU in March 2019 will allow the UK good time to negotiate more efficiently. The EU will be more eager to accept a deal on our terms having lost a major partner.

352,211 signatures were obtained and Parliament debated this topic on 14 January 2019

I totally agree MarthaBeck if I were Scottish I’d be FURIOUS with David Cameron. I have said this on forums here many times. DC assured the Scottish people that the best way for them to stay in the EU was to vote to stay in the U.K. when they held their referendum.

Mind you, at the time he (and a lot of others) didn’t for one minute think that his referendum on Brexit would have the outcome it did.

I bet the Scottish people who really wanted independence but were persuaded that staying as part of the U.K. was the best means of remaining in the EU feel they have been shafted.

The UK has the legal power to stop Brexit by unilaterally revoking Article 50, the EU‘s top court, the European Court of Justice (ECJ), has ruled.

The ruling matches legal advice given to the ECJ last week by its advocate general, who said as a sovereign country Britain could reverse its decision even at this late stage.

This comment on Twitter is interesting and ask a few valid questions that I have wondered about resding so much unfounded prejudice.
It reads in respons to rather inflammatory words about Remainers.
:
Ask yourself why so much deceit, explain why Brexit is better than the status quo when we don’t even have a clue what it means, not even a plan? Why gamble with the unknow and our kids future? It is a stupid gamble leaping into the complete unknown based on prejudices & deceit surely if zbrexit is our Utopia you would have s detailed plan highlighting its virtues l

Urmstongran Thu 14-Feb-19 20:28:59

The E.U. would be delighted varian if the government revoked Article 50.
So would all those who voted Remain.
The majority though (who voted Leave - remember us?) would be furious.

Anyway, how is the petition coming along Remainers?

MarthaBeck Thu 14-Feb-19 20:33:51

Apologies for all the typo’s earlier, I am suffering from conjunctivitis so I am going to have an early night to see if it will help to clear up.

Bye for now,

GrandmaKT Thu 14-Feb-19 20:44:16

Surely Urmstongran the mess we are currently in isn't the way you thought it would go when you voted to leave? I remember people saying "We'll be able to negotiate a deal within weeks", "The EU has more to lose than we do". There was no mention of Irish borders, backstop agreements, tariffs etc.
Not only the Remainers, but plenty who voted to leave are being dragged into a ridiculous deal (or even worse no deal) that we don't want and that will be a disaster.

Urmstongran Thu 14-Feb-19 21:02:22

The negotiations are a shambles indeed GrandmaKT and I despair that we are where we are. I don’t want to hijack Nonnie’s thread by going off topic so I shan’t say more here.

MaizieD Thu 14-Feb-19 21:19:31

Hi-jack alert

The E.U. would be delighted varian if the government revoked Article 50.
^So would all those who voted Remain.
The majority though (who voted Leave - remember us?) would be furious.

Weeelll,

Demographics calculations point to the fact that, by virtue of the passing of time, we have 'lost' sufficient Leave voters for there to now be a majority for Remain; assuming that people would still vote as they did in 2016. So, on that score there would probably be more people relieved than furious..

Add to 'relieved pile' the 3 million UK citizens living and working in the EU, many of whom were unable to vote, the 1 million non British EU citizens living and working in the UK (none of whom were able to vote), and the 2 million young people who have become eligible to vote since 2016; most of whom would vote Remain, and you have considerably more than 17.4 million people who would be very pleased if A50 were to be revoked.

Conversely, if it isn't revoked there are also considerably more people who will be very angry.

(Then, of course, there are those who didn't vote for one reason or another, but who do now have a view; many of whom would also be relieved if A 50 were to be revoked.)

I reckon there'd be more relief than there would be anger.

A bit of a problem, isn't it?
