UK politics and Russian money

It has been well established that Russia influenced the result of our EU referendum using social media, the aim being to destabilise the West, but there is another, even more insidious way that our politics have been corrupted.

One of the leading activists against corruption has told LBC that the UK is failing to act because politics is polluted by dirty Russian money.

Bill Browder has been campaigning for the introduction of the Magnitsky Act around the world, which stops corrupt people bringing their ill-gotten money into western democracies.

That law has been passed in a number of countries, including the UK and the US. In the US, there are 150 people on the Magnitsky list. In Canada, there are 70. There are another 70 in Lithuania and 49 in Latvia and Estonia. There are zero in the UK, despite the law being passed.

An opportunity arises from the British Parliament having voted to delay Brexit. If the British government gets approval from the European Union next week for an Article 50 extension, the months ahead should be used to finally get to the truth about the opaque sources of money spent in the 2016 referendum before implementing its results.

www.atlanticcouncil.org/blogs/new-atlanticist/use-brexit-delay-to-investigate-russian-money

This will only happen if British politicians and investigators prioritize quickly getting the public more conclusive answers. And it is important because the evidence revealed thus far raises the suggestion that the 2016 referendum on whether the United Kingdom should remain in the EU was targeted by a foreign adversary violating British sovereignty to undermine its democracy.

It's more a case of some people here helping Putin out. His aim is to de-stabilise the west by making the UK leave the EU.

He must be so proud of these brexiters, they're certainly doing their best to help him but , who knows?, he might just be in for as big disappointment.

Elegran Fri 22-Mar-19 13:22:33

It may be "helping us out", but Putin is sure to send in an invoice a request at some point to repay him for it. I wonder what the price will be? Not money, he has plenty of that, it'll be our soul.

andycameron69 Fri 22-Mar-19 11:04:06

no need to fret it is all harmless, just money helping us out.

i am so relaxed

That may well be true, nut Russian money has not (at least yet) endangered the EU membership of any other country.

Russian dirty money is a problem in the EU too. It has been quite a problem for the EU.

I asked this In February on this thread:-

As for the Magnitsky Act at least the UK has adopted it unlike most of the other countries . Am I correct only 6 countries have formally adopted the Magnitsky Act. The EU are debating the subject.

Happy to be corrected!

As for Russian influence over Elections and Referendums I still wonder why the question has not been asked what/if there was significant Russian influence over the U K General Election in 2017. Why not?

If Russia has influenced Elections in other countries such as USA, Germany, France it would follow the UK General Election was a prime candidate especially given the politics of some of our political parties.

The speed of technological development has coincided with a crisis of confidence in institutions and the media in the West. This has enabled foreign countries intent on destabilising democratic institutions to take advantage of this crisis. There has been clear and proven Russian influence in foreign elections, and we highlighted evidence in our Interim Report of such attempts in the EU Referendum.

It is interesting to note that, as of 30 November 2018, the online Government response to our Report received a total of 1,290 unique page views and the PDF has been visited 396 unique times from the website.265 In the month following its publication, over 63% of views of the report online were from foreign IP addresses (whereas, on average, 80% of viewers of Reports are UK-based), and of these, over half were from Russia. Furthermore, two-thirds of viewers were new visitors, meaning they had not visited the parliament.uk website before (in comparison with the majority of Reports, where only around 30% are new visitors).

Russia has publicly restricted itself to diplomatic pronouncements on the subject of Brexit. Its critics are not convinced of its sincerity. Even before the June 2016 referendum on the UK's EU membership took place, the British Foreign Secretary (and now Chancellor of the Exchequer, or Finance Minister) Philip Hammond suggested in a speech at the Chatham House think tank, "In fact, the only country who would like us to leave the EU is Russia. That should tell us all we need to know."

www.forbes.com/sites/jamesrodgerseurope/2018/12/10/brexit-is-russia-getting-what-it-wanted/#19f643294cc7

Russia's aim is to de-stabilise the West and brexit is a key part of that strategy. Do not expect any hand-wringing in the Kremlin over any medicine shortages which could happen her if brexit is not stopped. That is exactly what Putin is trying to achieve.

Yes, we will become the vassals dancing to the tune of those we will have to beg for deals- like Trump and so many others. Have to accept their poor and dangerous husbandry and hygiene, hormones, antiobtics, pesticides, beekilling insecticides and so much more ...

Oh and 1000s upon 1000s of immigration visas - now I don't mind that, personally- but perhaps not what Leavers voted for. Not if you see the front pages of the DM and others.

andycameron69 Sun 10-Mar-19 18:58:47

we will be able to trade on our own terms with the who;e world once we leave the unelected EU

How Brexit ‘bad boy’ Arron Banks was eyeing a massive Russian gold deal

Over the last year Arron Banks has been forced repeatedly to change his story about his relationship with Russia, the number of meetings he had with Kremlin representatives and oligarchs, and the lucrative deals he was offered in the run up to the Brexit referendum. (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)

But this programme has seen new documents which show that Arron Banks and his associates did try to cut a lucrative multi-billion dollar Russian gold deal dangled by a close associate of President Putin in the Russian embassy.

Mr Banks has repeatedly denied chasing any business deals whatsoever.

But we can reveal tonight the apparent lengths the Russians went to to cultivate the "bad boy of Brexit" and the efforts he made to seal a lucrative gold deal.

The source of his original Brexit donation is now the subject of an extensive National Crime Agency investigation.

Despite an agreement by all groups to suspend campaigning in the aftermath of Jo Cox’s death, Arron Banks instructed the social media team at Leave.EU to “boost” an existing sponsored Facebook ad.

A parliamentary inquiry into disinformation has called on the government to investigate the Russian state's attempts to influence the EU referendum.

The digital, culture, media and sport committee of MPs published its report on disinformation and fake news, examining the broad range of harms, including voter manipulation which can be conducted online.

Among the most contentious topics the committee has investigated has been the work of Leave-supporting campaigns ahead of the Brexit vote.
