US Senator Bernie Sanders says he will run again for president in 2020, making a second attempt to win the Democratic Party's nomination. The 77-year-old Vermont senator became a progressive political star in 2016 although he lost his candidacy bid.

If I had been an American voter in 2016 I would have supported Bernie Sanders, but he will be 79 in 2020, 83 in 2024. I am just a bit younger than Bernie and I have no doubt that from the age of seventy, although I was still working and had quite a lot of energy and enthusiasm for my work, I was beginning to slow down. I was not the President of the USA.

Is he too old or is that just age prejudice?

As The Times reported in December, Mr. Sanders is struggling to retain the support he garnered two years ago, when he was far less of a political star than he is today. His supporters have conceded that in some ways, Mr. Sanders is a victim of his own success.

“Ironically, Bernie’s agenda for working families will be the Democratic Party’s message in 2020, but he may not be the one leading the parade,” Bill Press, a talk show host who supported Mr. Sanders in 2016, said last year.

What I've seen and heard about Bernie Sanders I like very much but I do wonder if he would continue to have the energy to do this job. If there was no-one else putting forward the sorts of views and policies he espouses I think I would vote for him though. I don't know much about the other possible declared and candidates and must read up on it.

I don't think I could have voted for Hillary Clinton. Much as I am pleased if women progress further in all areas of public life, I wouldn't vote for a woman just because she is a woman.
