More than 1,000 London businesses back People’s Vote ‘to save economy’

www.standard.co.uk/news/politics/more-than-1000-london-businesses-back-people-s-vote-to-save-economy-a4084576.html

Pythagorus Thu 07-Mar-19 14:53:27

I thought the people had had their say.

It’s now up to the government to implement it.

Which they are trying to do ....... against obstacles from those who are trying to prevent it ....... using any means possible.

Throwing the dice until you get the number you want isnt the way the game is played.

varian Thu 07-Mar-19 15:21:50

The government have totally ignored half the population and spent the last two and a half years treating a narrow majority in an advisory referendum as an "instruction". It was only advice, not an instruction, but they have gone flat out for a hard brexit, laying down impossible "red lines" and trying to deliver the undeliverable false promises that fooled so many into thinking we could have our cake and eat it.

I think Theresa May has now shown conclusively that there is no more that she or anyone else could do to reconcile the contradictions inherent in the fraudulent promises that were made by the lying leave campaigners.

Any kind of brexit would damage our economy, compromise our security and reduce us to a poor little isolated shadow of the once great nation that we were and could still be if we stayed in the EU.

If the government is unable or unwilling to do the right thing and revoke Article 50, then the best hope would be for our MPs to act decisively to save us, but if they will not do it, then the best option would be a People's Vote.

Pythagorus Sun 10-Mar-19 08:59:13

Varian - I was a remainder. But I do recall that David Cameron said whatever the people voted would be implemented.

Can you imagine the result if the government had said ..... ok, you have voted leave ..... but it is only advisory and I know I said I would act on the result, but I am not going to because it is not good for the country.

The whole thing was a total fiasco. It has cost the country a huge amount of money and made us look ridiculous.

The referendum should never have taken place in my opinion. Before you decide to make the jump across a ravine, you need to check beforehand what is on the other side ...... and also check if it is possible to make the jump and achieve a safe landing!

andycameron69 Sun 10-Mar-19 09:18:24

the majority of those voters voted out ,so out we go.

easy to see and what a fab day in 19 days...

evil EU bye

and a march wont change anything

Luckygirl Sun 10-Mar-19 09:28:46

I agree with Pythagorus' assessment of what has happened and the mess it has landed us in. I am someone who felt that the EU had lost its way and some serious thinking needed to go on as to what our relationship with it should be; but I do not subscribe to the amateurish fiasco that is happening now. Nor did I agree with there being a referendum in the first place.

We needed mature and serious debate about our relationship with the EU, given that so many people prior to the referendum were clearly concerned about our position - including politicians. This has all been handled so badly.

And as for our position vis-a-vis the DUP - May's cynical bribery in order to keep her party in power has landed us in an impossible position in the Brexit negotiations. It is heartily sickening.

varian Sun 10-Mar-19 10:04:13

David Cameron will go down in history as a reckless gambler who has already cost this country dearly, both in terms of the wasted time and £billions and the fracturing of our social fabric.

He had absolutely no right to say he would act on the result of the referendum without any requirement for a minimum turnout and majority. It was unconstitutional. It should also be noted that under our constitution no parliament can ever commit a future parliament to anything.

andycameron69 Sun 10-Mar-19 10:17:52

a great result from the referendum. out we go totally

the people spoke

Pythagorus Sun 10-Mar-19 11:18:11

Wishful thinking Andy Cameron .....

Caledonai14 Sun 10-Mar-19 11:22:11

We need to ask where the Chancellor is getting the money from for the latest bribe being offered provided politicians vote for T. May's deal this week.

I suspect a fair whack of it will come from not paying WASPI women the pensions they thought they would get at 60.

This was being introduced slowly and reasonably until 2015 when the then Chancellor George Osborne accelerated it without any thought to the financial or practical pain it would cause, particularly as most WASPIs were given no official notification.

I've been wondering what the current Chancellor is doing with the £40,000+ per head minimum he is currently saving over 5 years and I've been hoping he was keeping some of it for when we do actually reach 66/7 (if the Tories haven't managed to shove it forward again).

But ah, I see it now. Some has already gone in bribes to the DUP (to vote for something a majority of the Northern Ireland people and businesses don't want); to bribes to get Labour MPs to switch sides to negate the votes of Tory rebels (you really couldn't make that up); or to pay the financial and legal costs of a disastrous attempted con (which fooled nobody) concerning a ferry company with no vessels and a harbour which wasn't fit to take them in the time scale.

Now - it seems - the Chancellor has a great pot of money to spare for bribes to our MPs to follow the Tories, albeit slowly, off the Brexit cliff, as opposed to being shoved into the no-deal abyss.

Probably only a fraction of it comes from WASPI savings, but I hope he remembers to keep a little back for those of us who were conned and misinformed for years. I'm not holding my breath, though.

Well done to all who are going to the march. In any other political era - bar war - this fractured, bungling, bribing government would have resigned by now.

Urmstongran Sun 10-Mar-19 11:26:10

I expect there will be many people attending this march.

Not 17,000,000 though.
?

MaizieD Sun 10-Mar-19 11:37:21

I don't expect that there will be 17 million on Farage's psuedo march either, but I'll bet that there are far fewer on it over all than there will be in London on 23rd March.

Urmstongran Sun 10-Mar-19 11:59:31

Could that be because the Leavers don’t feel the need to march in quite the same way?

Pythagorus Sun 10-Mar-19 12:13:30

So what do the marching folk want? A final say? What do they want to say? Is it in or out? Do the marchers want to negotiate with the EU? What do they want???

MaizieD Sun 10-Mar-19 12:41:10

I just want to stand up and be counted, Pythagorus.

I am well aware that it will make little difference to the outcome; no march ever has. Riots and civil disobedience are far more effective in checking governments through their fear of losing control.

GrannyGravy13 Sun 10-Mar-19 12:58:31

Petra a very timely quote from PA let's hope our elected MPs see / remember those words.

varian Sun 10-Mar-19 14:35:12

It is time to listen to young people.

"Brexit is the last straw for young people like me – we need a Final Say referendum to protect our futures"

www.independent.co.uk/voices/brexit-second-referendum-young-voters-corbyn-may-a8801511.html

Pythagorus Sun 10-Mar-19 14:37:29

I don’t know what all the fuss is about, or all the marching. The people voted to leave the EU. The prime minister is trying to deliver that but is thwarted by the opposition and members of her own party ...., and now the masses are marching! Bring back the guillotine. Off with their heads!
Total lunacy! We must be the laughing stock of the world!!

varian Sun 10-Mar-19 15:02:58

We already are the laughing stock of the world and have been since the fraudulent referendum. Our reputation may never recover, but we must all do our best to stop this brexit nonsense avert disaster.

Pythagorus Sun 10-Mar-19 15:41:28

Too late variance! We are committed!

suzied Sun 10-Mar-19 15:54:54

We are definitely the laughing stock of the world with our government of incompetents, dithering and u turns and resignations. Marching will show that all the people are not behind this madness. May said some tripe like "Brexit belongs to the people" -well thank you Treeza, I don't want your heap of sh!t - it and neither do millions of others.
