I agree with him . I don't like the image. I find Children in Need and Comic Relief unbearable to watch ,as it cuts between people in a bath of beans to famine in the developing world.

I donunderstand what DL was saying & why. I don't necessarily disagree with all his thinking.
However I think it was hugely ill judged, a few weeks before an enormously successful fundraising event that benefits many communities here in UK & in countries in Africa.
The event raises money because of its tried & tested format of celebs performing live and others showcasing the impact of the.work here & in Africa.
If he had wanted to raise this debate better to have done so in the yeat Comic Relief is not happening and have been more proactive in getting others to be involved.

Cut & paste bit obvious here Lily
Lazy much?

Lily65 Thu 28-Feb-19 21:01:03

I have no idea about self grandiosing/disingenuous comments/twisted views/chip on shoulder, the man made a comment about a cliched image and I agree with what he said.

Anniebach Thu 28-Feb-19 20:55:30

And we do not know if those taking part donate or not, heaven help if they flashed a cheque during the programme, cries of ‘ only gave money because he/she could be seen doing so on tv’.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 28-Feb-19 20:52:33

Lily65

You miss the point completely- people in Africa benefit from Comic relief and other charities.

Would you rather they stop?

I for one will not stop donating because of your “self grandiosing”

Anniebach Thu 28-Feb-19 20:52:21

Hell bells, accept it Lily, Comic Relief is solely to raise money, people watch , enjoy and donate , light entertainment, that’s it. Those taking part do so without a fee.

Viewers want to see celebrities, fact.

If the 'celebs' presenting Comic Relief, Sport Relief, or Children in Need were doing it free, or donating whatever they'd have been paid, then perhaps I'd feel differently, but seeing David Beckham posing with a 5-year-old Eithiopean kid and a football, having likely been flown out there first class at the licence payers' expense and either flown back again after the photo op, or put up in a 5* resort, whilst asking people, many of whom are practically destitute themselves after having their benefits slashed and tax credits and free childcare cut, for money is, to me, at best hypocritical. At the height of his career, Dave probably earned more than Ethiopia's entire GDP. Or Gary Barlow, Tory-donating, tax-avoiding multimillionaire, posing with Pudsey, begging people to donate to sick kids, how's about helping sick kids - and adults - Gary by PAYING FUCKING TAX…?! Or Wossy demanding are donate so we can watch him snog Graham Norton (or whatever). How much did Sheeranalbumparty (probably the best hashtag in the history of Twitter) get paid for that photo op…?

petra Thu 28-Feb-19 20:40:07

Try as I might, I can't see this happening wink

Lammy wants to sit at home and debate the issue.
Grow a pair and get yourself over there then man.

Lily65 Thu 28-Feb-19 20:10:49

Cool , glad we agree.

Joelsnan Thu 28-Feb-19 20:03:51

Lily65
a reasonable request......Can't they not film from Africa live? Can we not have African filmmakers, presenters and producers as well as perhaps some British celebrities to get across the issue
Of course they can Lily and the output can be broadcast across the continent of Africa and the rich of the region can donate the cash and deliver the aid without white interference. Great idea.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 28-Feb-19 20:02:56

Maybe watch comic relief and see the contributions of “people of colour”?

Lily65 Thu 28-Feb-19 19:32:57

if he wants to add colour to the fund raising

add colour to what? the colour that is there?

a reasonable request......*"Can't they not film from Africa live? Can we not have African filmmakers, presenters and producers as well as perhaps some British celebrities to get across the issue*

annodomini Thu 28-Feb-19 19:28:17

Was the BBC intentionally attempting to redress the balance by showing (on the One Show) Sir Lennie Henry in Cape Town, reporting on the improvements made thanks to Red Nose donations?

Lily65 Thu 28-Feb-19 19:27:15

Chuck out 3 or 4 examples of his racism.....I await.

Lily65 Thu 28-Feb-19 19:26:00

move not more

Lily65 Thu 28-Feb-19 19:25:27

What do you mean UG? There is nothing disingenuous about my post. I agree with what he said. I think it is an outdated and unfortunate image.

Quite how we more on to racist and chip on shoulder I don't know. I doubt Joelsnan need a heads up somehow and petra I await your reply to my question about your nasty comment.

petra Thu 28-Feb-19 19:19:25

lily65
He is racist and has a big chip on his shoulders
And you know this because........?
Here's a clue: it's in the words that come out of his mouth and the articles that he writes.

Lily65 on other threads it has often been said that the UK could/should import more from Africa. Unfortunately whenever it crops up the "air miles police" object???

Lily65 Thu 28-Feb-19 18:36:06

A 5% rise in developing countries’ share of world exports would generate $350bn – seven times as much as they receive in aid
