I agree with him . I don't like the image. I find Children in Need and Comic Relief unbearable to watch ,as it cuts between people in a bath of beans to famine in the developing world.

The thing is about Comic Relief is that it trains local people to help their fellow citizens.
Until the governments of these countries provide the medical care, the help, that is needed, this is fulfilling a desperate need.
Whether that means these governments can abdicate their responsibilities is another question.

Is David Lammy rather one-dimensional?
Or is there more to him?

Shizam Fri 01-Mar-19 22:12:52

David Lammy can be a bit, well, hmm, these days. And while I agree with him about celebs going on a charity trip to see the poor wee things and have a bit of a cry. Disagree with him focusing on Stacey Dooley. She has done some stunningly sensitive and powerful documentaries around the world. Look up BBC3 David! Often featuring vulnerable children. Her reply to him was well done.

Brilliant. Telling it like it is.

Well said.

Paddyann not trying to belittle our violent and debauched history, was it not the stronger of the black men who sold the more vulnerable to the nasty white man. The long and short of it, is, is that our history carries a lot of shame with it. It would be awful for the more vulnerable, if people stopped donating, because they could only be black to be able to hand over any aid. Do you really think that the child or the child’s mother cares a xxxx what colour hand puts food in their mouth or gives them an injection to prevent a nasty disease. They don’t get to listen to David Lammy pontificating, they are too bloody hungry to care.

Julia interested to know where the conflict is starting up again

The fish comment was an analogy. You may be right about bottom feeders but at the same time, do remember that scum rises to the top. I think I've deftly returned your volley and won the match.

Plenty of conflict in SEAsia... tell me more as I am out there 4 months of the year.

Jalima1108 Fri 01-Mar-19 20:03:59

Plenty of conflict in SEasia barmyoldbat
There certainly is and it is starting up again in at least one area sad

Yeah what with the tribes fighting and the laziness, they need all the help they can get.

Barmeyoldbat Fri 01-Mar-19 18:38:28

Agree with your post GG on then other page. Trouble with Africa is different tribes or ethnic groups don't get on with each and they seem to be always fighting. Thus we have wars and all that goes with it. In SE Asia there are many ethnic groups and different religions but they don't fight each other, they just get on with living side side.

andycameron69 Fri 01-Mar-19 18:23:43

true matson. good post.

Jalima1108 Fri 01-Mar-19 18:18:31

Anyway. Just give 'em some money. Who really cares if we actually watch or not?

We don't have to watch or even look at pictures - if we have DGC they all go into school with red noses etc and we send in money via the children.
Any school that doesn't participate would be frowned upon!

Jalima1108 Fri 01-Mar-19 18:13:12

In the UK very few people will know any star of any African country and therefore their ability to attract attention to the cause they are promoting would be negligable.
well, even I have heard of Charlene Thurzon, Gary Player, Elon Musk, Iman
just off the top of my head

Me neither.
I do get where he is coming from.

IMO, we in the West have been giving to India and Africa for decades and their situations have barely changed. Still a huge divide between the have and have-nots.
Corruption is rife.
That is very true - there are riches, there is water, there is fertile agricultural soil in African countries but so little gets through to those in need. I realise that it is a continent of discrete countries but it is one land mass as is Europe.
Corruption, exploitation and war are the bottom line.

Is it too much to expect that they could all work together towards a better future for the continent without having to rely on charity?

GG I am not under 35 but do not know which "peoples are lazy". Not sure what fish have got to do with anything, but know bottom feeders consume all the sh*t.

Joelsnan Fri 01-Mar-19 18:00:15

Jalima1108
what is wrong with African celebrities
Nothing, but I bet within the continent of Africa, few will know the 'stars' of each other's country. In the UK very few people will know any star of any African country and therefore their ability to attract attention to the cause they are promoting would be negligable.

Jalima1108 Fri 01-Mar-19 17:54:27

Native British person..what is that species?? David Lammy is a British born person!!
Of course, that would mean that white African celebrities would not be a problem.

Jalima1108 Fri 01-Mar-19 17:52:58

as well as perhaps some British celebrities to get across the issue
What is wrong with African celebrities?
of course, some could be white, would that be a problem?

GabriellaG54 Fri 01-Mar-19 17:51:35

Oh...I'm sure you can answer your own question, unless, of course you're under 35.
In any case, you ought to know that I'm not the kind of fish which rises to the bait.
I'm a bottom feeder not a clown fish.

quizqueen Fri 01-Mar-19 17:48:12

If countries can afford a space program, nuclear weapons, to go to war with other countries and palaces for their leaders then they can afford to feed their people and provide adequate medical and educational facilities. I wouldn't give a penny in foreign aid.
