We BREXIT this month (hopefully) ?
(1001 Posts)Any fellow Leavers who would like to use this thread to post GOOD NEWS (away from Remainer doom & gloom)?
How about this for starters:
Norway’s $1 trillion (£753 billion) sovereign wealth fund – among the world’s most respected investors – has just confirmed it will boost its UK holdings. “Over time, our UK allocation will increase,” said Yngve Slyngstad, the Norwegian Fund’s CEO. “With our 30-year-plus time horizon, current political discussions don’t change our view,” he added, reaffirming his commitment to Britain even in the case of a no-deal Brexit.
This kind of clear-sighted, grown-up analysis contrasts starkly with the endless doom-mongering we get from subsidy-hungry politicos at the CBI. It’s precisely because Britain will thrive after Brexit that we attracted record foreign direct investment last year, beating the US, with only China attracting more. Even British start-ups raised almost £8 billion in venture capital during 2018 – some 70 per cent more than their French and German counterparts.
Boeing has opened its first manufacturing plant in Europe – in Sheffield. Technology-driven investment is piling in – not just to London but to Manchester and the North-East too. And, as Brexit-bashing stories about planes not flying are trumped by reality, investors from China to the Middle East are flocking to a country just judged by Forbes magazine as the “best place in the world to do business” for the second year in a row.
Yes, overseas investors are taking advantage of the weaker pound, which makes UK assets look attractive. But that’s how exchange rates work – which is why Europe’s monetary union is so crippling for many of its members.
Sorry for the long post but I’m not keen on links!

Name and shame. We're all behind you.
I’ve just had a rather nasty private message sent to me. I wonder why someone would choose to do that rather than post their view of me on this thread?
Sorry posted too soon.
Passing a test (in citizenship perhaps) might be a good idea before becoming enfranchised.
This is the hard reality: yesterday's vote was the last way out of this mess. There is no way to undo Brexit, nor to get a better or different deal! I think that’s why I felt deflated last night.
The EU has told everyone time and time and time again that there is no better deal. Rees-Mogg can shout all he wants about wanting a hard Brexit, and Corbyn and Labour can shout all they want about wanting a special customs union with the EU (e.g. Switzerland style), but neither are going to happen. Disagree with May and her deal all you want, this was the only way out at this point.
At the end of the day, the UK can demand all it wants but the EU and its members are setting the rules here and have all the power. They can’t make this easy/good for us as Italy would want out next.
The dictator in me is thinking that passing an int
I’m glad it’s not just me Mcem, Brexit has certainly uncovered some very worrying view points .
I believe that within the parliamentary estate there are thirteen bars, which may account for the state of governance in this country.
I think I brought that point up on another thread - which other places of employment have bars in the buildings selling alcohol?
I know that some people do go to the pub and lunch-time and others have long business lunches, but that is not the norm surely?
Not the first time that thought has crossed my mind Bridgeit !?♂️?♂️
Day6 Quote [I bet the HOC bar has been drunk dry. hmm] End Quote.
I believe that within the parliamentary estate there are thirteen bars, which may account for the state of governance in this country.
The price of drinks in all those bars is also very cheap, being that it is subsidised by us taxpayers.
If comments coming from some Leavers on this thread are represtentative of all Leavers, then I am very worried for the future of this country , you sound like kids in a playground singing Da Da Didums . Pretty sad really.

andy , bore off why don't you? Surely you must have an essay to write or toy cars to put in a row?
What does? A Speaker's advice on Parliamentary procedure?
sounds fabulous
Re Caroline Spelman's proposal to withdraw her amendment (ostensibly notas a result of pressure from whips).
Bercow has just explained that she can't do it. It is not in her control.
If she chooses not to vote for it that's up to her but any of the other signatories can move it.
I am very positive, best leave the evil EU on WTO
lots of WTO deals in place...jolly excited, out we go....
out we go
Hmmm. Forgive my cynicism.
Have you got inside information andy because I hate to burst your bubble?
our fabulous country is fine and blossoming.I feel no need to be scared, very positive
i am not melting down
although I am very aware of the elected MP's treason and lies and about me, us the majority voted Leave...
very corrupt.
I will see what happens
with interest.
I don't see the end of the world either...
This country and it's government is in total meltdown
No - that is simplistic scaremongering and inaccurate.
The House of Commons may be a disgraceful assembly - and democracy as a principle in the UK has been whipped, trashed and lies bleeding.
ALL parties and a fair number of self-serving MPs have let down the electorate of the UK. As GG13 mentioned, if ever there was a need for Guy Fawkes, it's now.
However, the Earth keeps spinning, the rains still fall, the sun still shines and we little people have to get on with it. We are ineffective. We have learnt that.
The country is NOT in meltdown. That is your interpretation and it's more hysterical rhetoric.
The shops are open, people have gone to work, the buses and trains are running, the banks haven't gone bust, TV and radio is still working and groups were laughing and joking at the bar as we enjoyed a pub lunch today. Life does go on.
YOU can melt down if you like Labaik but I shan't, nor will others. YOU need a sense of perspective. We are becoming heated on internet forums all over the place, in typed discussions, but the country and the government is NOT in mentdown.
Either that, or as an extension of Project Fear you need to, as a Remainer, whip up anger of 'end of the world' type proportions?
Yes - it's a complete farce, an utter shambles, we are all angry, but we have survived far worse.
All we can do is wait and see what happens next - so chill, maybe? (Or have a personal meltdown, because of political matters, if you really want to.)
great post Day 6
yes popcorn and alcohol to celebrate
16 days...in Law
lots of WTO deals in place...jolly excited, out we go....
out we go
a total Brexit great for GB and what the majority of those who voted, voted for and got
So much for a free vote for the Tories!
Do you mean she has or will withdraw the motion altogether ?
If it has already been submitted, isn't it the Speaker's prerogative to choose which motions are put to the vote?
Oh for heavens sake. This country and it's government is in total meltdown. Just grow up will you...
Oh and pass the popcorn please...
The millions of us in the UK have no idea what comes next.
Flowers - to remind her that regardless of how the press and public castigate, ridicule and spin, there are still some of us who acknowledge how downright difficult her job has been
That was a lovely gesture.
I too feel so sorry for the woman. Whoever had been PM would have faced exactly the same problems (unless they'd caved in to the EU and Remainer pressure, so afaiac, Theresa May did all she could. She just couldn't please everybody - no PM in her situation would have done better. She could not fight a House of Commons which would never, ever agree with her ...
She was just the poor mug who ended up carrying the poisoned chalice, and I salute her, and recognise her incredible efforts. She must be completely exhausted, completely deflated.
No one knows where we go from here.
Impasse - and a parliament full of individuals out to put a spoke in her wheel because they chose to ignore democracy and as individuals wanted to Remain, despite the wishes of their constituents.
Yep - need popcorn. Has no one thought to bring alcohol????
I bet the HOC bar has been drunk dry.
