Misreading the country?

It seems to me from talking to others and just listening in on conversations on buses and in shops etc that there is an overwhelming feeling that Westminster should just get on with it! This isn't a brexit/remainer thread. It's just expressing concern that Westminster is in its own little mixed up bubble and is just ignoring the people they're supposed to represent ie the great British public.

Just a thought.
Are you aware that the majority of illogical, poorly-expressed posts are from those who support Leave?
(not all of course)
Coincidentally the clear, well-expressed posts (mostly) come from Remainers.
That's in no way saying that the Leavers are less intelligent or more gullible than the Remainers (that would not be based on honest scientific fact) but it makes you wonder if that's representative of the electorate at large.
Just wondering!

Just a thought.
Are you aware that the majority of nasty, sneering, judgmental posts are from posters who voted to remain.
Just saying.

oh can't say I've noticed...

andy's arguments are always so well phrased and detailed.

Lazigirl Sun 17-Mar-19 16:56:57

I don't suppose either side of this debate have the monopoly on erudite argument to support their cause. I voted Remain but I don't see the point of going back on old ground. We are where we are and have to compromise to move forward, because I suppose no one will be totally satisfied with the outcome. We are so divided as a country, not necessarily along party lines for a change, but I hope we can find a way of overcoming the apparent bitterness and vitriol when this is all over. Philip Hammond incidentally has said today that there may not be a vote next week unless the DUP and more of the Tory MPs back the deal. He has also stated that it will now be physically impossible to leave 29th March. Whatever happens you can be sure that the 20% of highest wage earners will not suffer, whatever the outcome!

John Redwood is fabulous and so honest

Ooeyisit Sun 17-Mar-19 17:26:12

It’s a case of do you want to be ruled by Europe . There will be no sovereign states and we won’t have our own laws , there will be one European Army and the young wont have a choice on joining up , girls as well as boys . . In other words we will be ruled by one European president .

trisher Sun 17-Mar-19 17:38:32

Yes please I want to be ruled by Europe. Nothing could be as bad as the bunch of liars and cheats that is currently clinging on to power!
Can't imagine the French will be willing to let their young join up.

madness eu

great post

ooeyisit so true what you say totally in every aspect.

thank you very logical too

I cannot stand the EU, unelected nasty , run by mad Germany

jura2 Sun 17-Mar-19 17:55:06

Ooeyisit - where on earth do you get this nonsense from? Oh my!

Trisher, I do NOT want to be ruled by Europe- at all. I want the UK to be a strong partner in the EU- sit at the top table to make cooperative decisions and solve the many issues we face - and keep the alt right at bay- for peace and cooperation.

trisher Sun 17-Mar-19 18:00:25

jura if someone posts something ridiculous it's best to give a silly answer. Taking them seriously just encourages them.

andycameron69 Sun 17-Mar-19 18:17:03

I hope that's a British Teddy Andy and not one of them German Stieff ones! (If it is it may have to be confiscated when we Brexit, or at least apply for residency)

andycameron69 Sun 17-Mar-19 19:36:18

Jalima1108 Sun 17-Mar-19 19:42:14

Them German Steiff ones are worth a lot of money trisher!
Even more than my 1940s Chad Valley one.

This bear pit isn’t for the feint hearted that’s for sure!

Jalima1108 Sun 17-Mar-19 19:50:07

I'm a remainer but I don't bite.
smile

I'm with the OP: Westminster should just get on with it! This isn't a brexit/remainer thread. It's just expressing concern that Westminster is in its own little mixed up bubble and is just ignoring the people they're supposed to represent ie the great British public.

Jalima1108 Sun 17-Mar-19 19:52:40

sit at the top table
Why should the EU have a top table when we all have the same right to veto?

There should not be a top table, but I can understand why people who voted to leave did so when we see the Franco-German alliance throwing their weight around.

Lazigirl Sun 17-Mar-19 20:30:24

Anyone who ventures to trip trap onto this thread Urmstongran is brave imo and wasting their time hmm

Professor Simon Hix studied the UK's influence in the EUropean Union in 2015 and concluded-

These network pictures clearly show the centrality of the UK in EU negotiations. Germany and France are also close to the centre, but UK officials appear to be the best connected of all the member states’ officials.

In other words, when it comes to negotiations behind the scenes, before votes take place and before laws are adopted, the data suggest that the UK government is right at the heart of EU policy-making, and certainly at the top table, alongside Germany and France. The data also suggest that the Eurozone crisis has not had any noticeable effect on the centrality of the UK in EU bargaining.
