I like it Bridgeit. A sort of European hokey cokey.
Perhaps because the referendum was so closely divided the only way forwards to please everyone would be to have 5yrs in & 5yrs out & then 5yrs to dissect, compare etc........OK bad joke , but just suggesting.........
I am sick of our democracy being trampled on,
Me too, craftyone.
But our democracy was trampled on during the EU referendum campaign when Leave campaigning organisations broke the law and cheated. It's also been well trampled on by their use of targeted adverts which not only contained massive lies but were also only known about by the people who placed them and their recipients. This meant that no-one was able to counter the lies that were being told. Which is completely unacceptable in a democratic campaign.
This came into force on 01/01/2019 and all member states have to apply it from that date.
Date of application was at the discretion of the member states, GG13 The date for the UK to apply it was the beginning of out tax year, April 2019. Thought to be one of the reasons that May was so keen to get us out of the EU by the end of March...
What happens now in regard to it is 'interesting'...
The Brexiters - not sure which ones - are threatening to "go nuclear" if the long extension is accepted.
This kind of threatening behaviour really should be nipped in the bud.
Read some of the comments in the Daily Mail article where it has been suggested that the government should be brought down, and ministers should in future "look over their shoulder".
Do Leavers in general really want to be associated with such thuggish, oafish behaviour. I doubt GransNet Leavers do.
It has to be stopped otherwise we are allowing threats, violence and mayhem to dictate the course of our political life... like some backward 3rd world country from a previous era.
Absolutely disgraceful.
Not sure there is any good news about brexit now it’s been cancelled. ( in all but name )
I knew we’d be stitched up from day 1.
Oh well.
Varian, thugs of any persuasion should not be allowed to influence / intimidate MPs on that we totally agree.
Threats and intimidation have no place in a democracy and must have no influence on Brexit or the prospect of a second referendum – if one is required. Amid ongoing concern over the aggressive harassment of our elected representatives outside the Westminster Parliament, it is hard not the sympathise with the police.
As the Commons’ Speaker John Bercow wrote in his letter to the Metropolitan Police – which called for greater protection of MPs – it is “a difficult job striking the balance between allowing peaceful protests and intervening when things turn sour”. If officers were to clamp down on protests related to Brexit or any other issue in a heavy-handed way, that would be bad for democracy. For while the use of “threatening or abusive words or behaviour” may be a criminal offence, the European Convention on Human Rights also guarantees the right to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly.
These are important rights which all democrats should support. The important thing in all of this is not to let those who step over the mark by resorting to aggression and threats have any effect on politics. They cannot be allowed to become so intimidating that MPs start keeping their heads down or shy away from making points as effectively as they could. They cannot be allowed to build up a head of steam that ultimately results in violence.

You might well not have a racist bone in your body, but there's enough who do to make it a problem, which is why it's constantly dragged up. Some people are genuinely scared.
And it is a Leader and Treasurer that had to go - not just rogue members
You’d think they’d check their social media accounts before they appointed them wouldn’t you though?
Well they seem to be turfing out the bad eggs, which is more than can be said for the other political parties??
Ah the Brexit party - as in oh dear another resignation by one of their officers for racist online posts?
The brexit party is up and running and I have just donated. I am sick of our democracy being trampled on, got to do something, like our parents and grandparents did. Money is as nothing compared to their personal sacrifices and I am proud to be British
Personally, I am not in any camp unless you call " It's an almighty mess" a camp.
Of course not all those who voted to leave are/were racists. Many factors came into play. The press and UKIP whipped up the anti immigration fervour and some people voted leave on the back of that.
As a leave voter with friends and acquaintances of all nationalities and religions I am totally over “leave voters are racists” constantly being trotted our by the remain camp.
Yes!
Looks as if it might be postponed again ☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺
The media has created a hostile environment for some time for the poor, disabled/sick and unemployed. They've been blamed for as much as possible, and now it's the turn of immigrants - those immigrants that were encouraged by Blair who decided that staggered immigration levels were not necessary - in fact, he was one of those who voted for the expansion of the EU.
Just sit back and ask yourself, why? Why are the media, politicians, attempting to demonise these people? And follow the money...
That makes it all alright then.
EU anti tax avoidance-Directive 2016/1164/EU
This came into force on 01/01/2019 and all member states have to apply it from that date.
It has been widely reported that JRM has moved part of his assets to Southern Ireland so this directive all ready applies to him.
An ESOL teacher I know was told by a relative she would be out of work soon.
"Why"? she enquired
"Because they are all going home" came the reply.
Some people actually believe this nonsense and sadly for us many of "them" have left.
Maxdecatt - the majority of the print media has been creating a feeling of hostility in their readers towards immigrants. My sister in law is a prime example of this. She believed the outpourings of Farage et al about England being overrun and she voted to leave. This was despite her husband's carer, who had lived, worked and paid taxes in the UK for about 20 years being Polish and the staff and management of the care home where he went for short respite visits being Spanish. Her response was that she didn't mean him/them but the harm was done.
I have mentioned James O'Brien's LBC programme before but here's an example of the English attitude. O'Brien was having a conversation on the programme with a Leaver. In a nutshell - the Leaver didn't like immigrants. O'Brien asked what the caller's favourite food was - the answer - curry. What is the English's favourite dish? Chicken Korma (my question, not O'Brien's) Enough said.
Ooh JRM do you suppose he will realise at some point "You can fool some of the people...." Mind you I suppose as long as the Leavers believe in the referendum and think it was democracy in action he is OK. God help him if they ever realise that it was built on lies and deception and illegal. Mind you he might have made a lot more money by then so he won't care.
@MaizieD
Why don't Leavers get it (I'm sure some do)... JRM's reasons for wanting to leave the EU are not the same as their reasons and I doubt very much he has 'the people's' interests at heart although he will, like all of his type, pretend - with that po-faced, calculated seriousness they ALL adopt when talking about "the will of the people", that is the main concern.
The educated Leavers, surely, must see through this politicking?
