When my mum & dad decided to marry in 1952, mum lived with her family in Blackpool. Dad was in Portsmouth serving in the RN. They exchanged many letters during their courtship. Mum mentioned in one of her letters that the only way they could be together in Portsmouth would be if they were to marry.

Dad sent her a TELEGRAM. Bless. I have it in my memory box as mum died last year.

Most of the comments I read from leavers invariably refers to this country as somehow having been forced to join the EU, held hostage without access to or involvement with decision making, paying out huge sums of money with nothing in return etcetc. We in fact have enjoyed many benefits from this union, especially for our young people. We should at least acknowledge it hasn’t all been a one way street .

It’s a Royal Navy slang term Lily65 and I love it. I was born in Portsmouth, my dad served for many years as an engineer in the Royal Navy. It’s similar in meaning to a merit. I like the old traditions.

I think it's a fair comparison but you have your very strong views as have I.
I did not say that I still support UKIP with Tommy Robinson in charge. I did say that I agree, in the main, with most of Nigel Farage's points when he first headed the party.
If something morphs into an ugly parody of the original, I am never going to agree.
I do believe in controlled immigration. I do believe that we should welcome those who wish to contribute to our economy but, there has to be the infrastructure to support it.
Many countries, much, much bigger than ours, have extremely strict immigration procedures and it works. If you have a secure job to go to and enough money to sustain you and anyone who comes with you so you are not a drain on the taxpayers of the country you seek to live in...that is good and right.
But you're making it all about immigration which is not my primary concern.
I would like Britain to stand on it's own two feet without having to refer to the diktats and constraints of the EU. That is first and uppermost on my wish list.
I ask you this.
Does everyone who voted Labour agree with the anti-semitic and other comments made by Jeremy Cornyn or the antics (past and present) of the Labour led unions?
I don't agree with half the stuff that Conservatives peddle either.
No party has a clean blemish-free face. None.

It's not really a fair comparison though is it? Robinson is aligned with UKIP. One of the main thrusts of UKIP is a desire to rid this sceptred isle of immigrants.

I WAS a UKIP supporter and have previously voted for them but that doesn't mean that I underscore every member and agree with the likes of Robinson.
That is akin to saying that every Labour supporter agrees with and likes Jeremy Corbyn or any other similarities I could make.
I was (and in many ways still am) in agreement with Nigel Farage, certainly not the ugly 'face' of UKIP associated with or represented by Tommy Robinson.
It is you who have married the two, not I.
I have always been a conservative voter until UKIP came along.
I still agree with NFs policies in the main but do not agree with or support Tommy Robinson.
