The government repeatedly claims exiting the EU is 'the will of the people'. Well now there is a petition demonstrating the strength of public support for revoking article 50!

I’m glad you all had a good day. smile

However, I’m surprised there wasn’t more people at the march.
Just under a million people is a great turnout, but London is remain central so it was clearly mainly local people.
How many people voted remain?
16 million?
Had the march attracted 3 or 4 million people from all over the country it would have been far more impressive, still a complete waste of time, but more impressive.
From what I saw on the news it seemed to be all about Nicola Sturgeon pushing her own agenda.

maryeliza54 Sun 24-Mar-19 08:07:16

Sour grapes much

maryeliza54 Sun 24-Mar-19 08:09:23

If Leave had a large successful March ( ha) I’d just keep quiet and not talk about it - maybe just discuss the price of butter. Sour grapes is not a good look.

Kandinsky Sun 24-Mar-19 08:10:18

Hahaha.
Oh the irony.

BlueBelle Sun 24-Mar-19 08:22:00

Oh dear Kandinsky sounds very desperate surprised you didn’t go dah dah Di dah dah and put your finger to your nose
Love the huge crowds following ‘leave means leave’ and that strange beer swilling man, was is it a 100 ?

maryeliza54 Sun 24-Mar-19 08:46:25

I’m waiting now for someone to argue that they shouldn’t have counted the people in wheelchairs because they weren’t you know actually marching

MaggieTulliver Sun 24-Mar-19 09:57:02

So 1 million isn't that great a turnout Kandinsky and a complete waste of time? How gracious you are...

Kandinsky Sun 24-Mar-19 10:09:26

Well it’s a waste of time in as much as it won’t stop brexit, but it’s not a waste of time for those taking part who feel a sense of pride.
Marches in general don’t change much.

RosieLeah Sun 24-Mar-19 10:14:56

If Brexit is stopped, it will only be temporary. UKIP will rise again and the whole campaign will start over. Plus, if we stay in and things start to fall apart...us Leavers will smugly say...'We told you so!' We're doing you all a favour and you don't realise. Leavers are realists...Remainers are ostriches who refuse to acknowledge where the EU is headed.

Kandinsky Sun 24-Mar-19 10:21:02

Well yes.
If brexit is stopped UKIP ( or worse ) will lap up all the disillusioned leave voters. All they’ll have to say is; ‘no one listened to your concerns before brexit & no one listened to your referendum result’ - NO ONE CARES!
.....but we do.
Job done.

Caledonai14 Sun 24-Mar-19 10:22:52

The BBC in Scotland are saying this morning that police are saying there were 2 million people on the march, but for some reason the BBC nationally haven't bothered to update their numbers. Sadly the Tory megainfighting has stolen the news headlines today. This won't help the Conservative cause. They should have got Mrs May out when they had the chance and not left it to less than a week before the still-on-the-table (apparently, but sadly) headfirst dive over Brexicliff.

Caledonai14 Sun 24-Mar-19 10:23:43

Petition at 4,901,700.

trisher Sun 24-Mar-19 10:28:51

That's a really good idea Kandinsky UKIP returning would ensure a really right wing party whose objectives are obvious. Much better than the hidden right wing which conceals itself under the guise of caring conservatism whilst pursing extreme right wing policies. It would also split the right wing vote so leaving the way open for a Labour government. So bring it on!

suzied Sun 24-Mar-19 10:29:05

I suppose if wed been burning cars and looting shops we'd have more attention, because it was peaceful and friendly its just sneered at. No, it wasn't just "locals", coaches and trains from all over the country, Nicola Sturgeon talked for about 5 minutes and there was over an hour of different speakers, so don't base your impressions on the Brexit Broadcasting Corporation.

Greta Sun 24-Mar-19 10:48:41

Kandinsky: If brexit is stopped UKIP ( or worse ) will lap up all the disillusioned leave voters.

Do you really believe the majority of leave voters would turn to UKIP?

RosieLeah: ^ Leavers are realists^...

Pity they didn't realise the mess they were about to create. Mind you, since we were told it was going to be a walk in the park to disentangle us from the EU that is hardly surprising.

Greta Sun 24-Mar-19 11:16:12

sorry: disentangle ourselves...

must improve my proofreading

Caledonai14 Sun 24-Mar-19 11:24:51

30,000 people have signed the petition in the last hour.

icanhandthemback Sun 24-Mar-19 12:22:28

500,000 on the march weren’t under 5 btw

That was an extreme example but you get my drift

I was just pointing out that "numbers" aren't everything. They are only indicative if the people who are marching would legitimately have a say in a new referendum. That is my view, yours might be different, Crystaltipps
I'd be saying the same if it was Leavers and their 5 year olds marching too grin

RosieLeah Sun 24-Mar-19 12:23:48

A lot of those signing the petition will have done so for personal reasons, not because they are concerned for the future of this country. Those who have chosen to leave the UK and settle in European countries, businessmen who fear loss of income, people who enjoy foreign holidays. Whenever there is any sort of political debate, people always put their own interests first.

mumofmadboys Sun 24-Mar-19 12:36:40

Should go over 5 million this afternoon

maryeliza54 Sun 24-Mar-19 12:41:43

Oh really RL and you know that how? Your post probably reflects why you vote as you do but don’t tar me with that self interest brush - and many other left of centre and/or remain people I know.

maryeliza54 Sun 24-Mar-19 12:42:55

Leavers as the true altruists - who’d have thunk it?

humptydumpty Sun 24-Mar-19 12:54:23

Kandinsky I understood coaches were leaving from all over England for the march, some leaving in the middle of the night. Do you have any source for your comment that "it was clearly mainly local people"?

varian Sun 24-Mar-19 13:01:02

BBC Scotland reported 2 million on the march and unofficial police estimates were just under 2 million. What we can be sure about is that they were well over a million peaceful marchers, and probably nearer to 2 million.

varian Sun 24-Mar-19 13:02:21

We spoke to many people on the march and only two were from London.
