The government repeatedly claims exiting the EU is 'the will of the people'. Well now there is a petition demonstrating the strength of public support for revoking article 50!

25,000 will take the petition over the 5 million mark

I think most people who have signed the petition (and those who oppose Leave in general) are very concerned for the future of this country and feel that this future is much more secure in Europe than out, at least for now.
They do not want to be dragged into what could potentially amount to an economic suicide pact.

Once out of the EU, there would be no going back, however bad things got for the UK, whereas staying in the EU for the time being would not preclude us from reviewing the situation and leaving in the future should it clearly be in our interest to do so.

I hate that Brexit is so divisive and one of the things that heartened me yesterday is that there were people present from all walks of life and from differing backgrounds. I am sure that would also have been the case if the Leavers had held a march.

I have friends in both the Leave and Remain camps and we can, and do, have disagreements on the subject. We are respectful toward each other and we can debate the issues without resorting to unkindness, even if we sometimes have to end a conversation prematurely to save an escalation into what could become unpleasantness. My Leaver friends absolutely understand that I am maintaining my integrity by doing all I can to stop this country from taking what I believe to be a wrong turning. They also know that, leave or remain, I will do all I can to build bridges after the event. My Leave friends believe that pulling out of the EU is the way forward and although they don't agree about how that should happen, they have a right to express their opinions and be listened to with respect. Where tensions have arisen amongst my friends is when people have changed their minds after the original vote and this has been looked upon as a 'betrayal'. sad

14 thousand to go to take it over 5 million!

Great post grannyactivist
Unfortunately, the anonymous nature of social media means some people behave in a way they never would in RL.
You can disagree without resulting to insults.

Caledonai14 Sun 24-Mar-19 14:19:25

That's it. 5,000,070 and counting. Keep it going.

Caledonai14 Sun 24-Mar-19 14:37:38

Looks like 10,000 added in 15 minutes. BBC haven't managedto update the story since yesterday so I'm hoping someone is managing to take notice.

We are leaving, try as people might we are leaving,
This petition i believe was started by someone in Greece ,and a lot of other countries are involved
I will not sign it and every other leaver i know will not sign either, good try but it wont make any difference

Kandinsky Sun 24-Mar-19 14:59:19

Started by someone in Greece?

Sounds about right.

suzied Sun 24-Mar-19 15:06:14

It was started by a 77 year old lecturer who is of Cypriot background but is a UK resident. How do these vile rumours start, poor woman has had death threats and is living in fear.

trisher Sun 24-Mar-19 15:06:48

Mis-information once again. The woman is thought to be from Huddersfield, she is visiting Cyprus just now. 96% of the signatures have been confirmed as acceptable.
What is the matter with Leavers? Are they so used to hearing and seeing lies they have to attribute the same skills to us all?

trisher Sun 24-Mar-19 15:07:45

Sorry suzied crossed posts.

My brother has signed - he couldn't vote in the referendum even though the outcome it affects him and his family. So the petition is good for people like him so he can at least register an opinion as a British citizen who will be affected by Brexit. So people can rubbish it all they like - why would anyone bother to vote multiple times? what sinister foreign power would want to ? Oh it must be those Greeks who started it , no one in the UK can have signed in good faith, oh no.

varian Sun 24-Mar-19 15:32:42

5,050,644 signatures

varian Sun 24-Mar-19 16:24:25

On this counter you can see how quickly signatures are being added.

Kadinsky and blond what’s your excuses for posting lies? You do the reputation of Leavers no good at all but do confirm what some of us suspect about Leavers

Kandinsky Sun 24-Mar-19 16:34:00

Eh?
What lies have I posted?

mumofmadboys Sun 24-Mar-19 16:35:21

Thanks Varian. It is mesmerising watching the numbers climb and climb.

MaizieD Sun 24-Mar-19 16:35:41

,and a lot of other countries are involved

Of course they are because, believe it or not, some native people are allowed to leave these blessed shores to work, live or take holidays in foreign parts. And, by a miracle called the internet they are able to communicate with the mother ship while they are doing so.

The number of signings from abroad were fewer than 10% last time I saw any analysis.

The underlying data is available for anyone to examine

petition.parliament.uk/petitions/241584.json

Though I do appreciate that it's much easier to just repeat lies from Brexit Central or wherever...

maryeliza54 Sun 24-Mar-19 16:42:13

‘Started by someone in Greece? Sounds about right’

Except it was completely wrong as seconds on Google would have confirmed. But no do carry on with helping to spread lies with more than a sprinkling of xenophobia

quizqueen Sun 24-Mar-19 16:43:00

I would hazard a guess that lots of people, who have signed this petition, were not eligible to vote in the Referendum, either by virtue of not living in this country or not being a British citizen. If you believe in democracy then you should believe in 'one man, one vote' and a random, anonymous online petition is not going to produce that. Where is the 'leave means leave ' petition?

maryeliza54 Sun 24-Mar-19 16:44:25

Why not start one quiz? You are allowed you know

mumofmadboys Sun 24-Mar-19 16:45:10

No one wants to sign one quizqueen!
