Climate Change Protests - will they make a difference?

There has been so far 3 days of climate change protests in Central London and other locations. They’ve disrupted traffic and inconvenienced a few, but have been in the main peaceful and has had a festival atmosphere. It looks like these protests will continue. Personally I feel climate change is a really important issue and should be the one that our esteemed politicians should be acting on and discussing but they aren’t. I’m in no way part of this group but, with some reservations, applaud their efforts and hope it does bring the issue to the fore. It does highlight how far our police resources are stretched that they can’t be stopped though. If you don’t live or work in the capital you probably don’t care about the protest , but hopefully you do care about the issues, and these protests it may be coming to a town near you. What do others think?

Anja Fri 19-Apr-19 20:05:05

It is exactly the way to go about it.

Callistemon Fri 19-Apr-19 20:05:53

Explain to me what good it has done then, please.

Well said Mycat Your post 19.36.48

The Guardian has an interesting article on whether the ED protests will achieve their aim. www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2019/apr/19/extinction-rebellion-climate-change-protests-london?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other

I expect the protesters have good intentions but they rather remind me of the old saw that each new generation of youngsters think they have invented sex. I've been concerned about the environment for many, many years and I think most people in the UK must be aware of the worries for the future.

Anja Fri 19-Apr-19 20:15:42

Callistermon it is being debated all over the world. Protests everywhere. Instead of being brushed under the carpet.

We are talking about it on GN. There’s at least one more threa£. My grandchildren are discussing it. Climate change is on the news.

People are writing to their MPs....at least some of us are.

Wonder how many of the ‘I’m doing my bit’ brigade have bothered their MP. That’s doing your bit.

Callistemon Fri 19-Apr-19 20:19:02

I think that it could have antagonised many people unfortunately and those who are aware were aware anyway, others are not bothered and some are just plain angry.

Anja Fri 19-Apr-19 20:22:17

So what if they are antagonised?

It’s not about being ‘aware’ it’s about getting off your backside and doing something about it.

These are exactly the same old arguments that people were using 100 years ago about the suffragettes.

"Explain to me what good it has done"

Well we've had a nice pink boat in the middle of London, which would have been good, but I gather it was plastic confused

Emma's planted some more trees to ameliorate her "emergency air travel"

Robin Boardman-Whatshisface a very, very important Extinction Rebellion spokesperson has some gritty "getting down and dirty on the pavement protest" pics to upload to his Instagram page along with his absolutely "emergency air travel" ones to the Maldives
and taking on the piste skiing holidays.

Lily Allen wasn't there, that's really good cos although Emma's ever so slightly batshit she does at least have some talent neither does she keep displaying very long green/blue nails when she wiping her eyes after having a meaningful grizzle on behalf of the nation. In fact Emma has remained pretty cheerful throughout, but maybe that's down to the pink plastic boat, or just getting out of the US, a miserable donut infested land mass as opposed to a sad, grey cake filled island. Anyway speculation who knows!

Lots of police have had their holiday leave cancelled which is kind of awful.............but the upside of that is, they might not be flying off anywhere on "non emergency air travel" like taking the kids on their annual holiday, I mean it's not as if they are Robin Boardman-Whathisface, or even Emma, or a Climate Control Lawyer...and I suspect, unlike Emma once they get back to the UK, they wouldn't plant a single tree hmm

Finding out there are Climate Control Lawyers Wow! mega impressive! Their air travel must be in the "well emergency" bracket and I bet they plant loads of trees when they get back.

Finding out some of the protestors use "once only coffee cups and plastic bottles"....................ummmm! as my grandchildren might say shock

Some young protestors unfurled a banner at tunnels leading to Terminal 2 and 3 about unnecessary air travel, but were moved on allegedly, so they went back into London to unfurl it to Emma and Robin-Boardman-Whathisface when happily there was a group "Eureka moment" and it was unanimously decided that perhaps the banner (ethically sourced) of course, could be used by those protestors who didn't bring enough in the way of loo rolls.

My personal piece de resistance would be those that super glued themselves to Jeremy Corbyn's gaffe, I keep wondering if they are still there and Jezza's been out to spoon feed them cold baked beans (Tescos) of course.

I'll try and think of some more but thus far I'd say that's a satisfactory outcome smile

Terri,grin that’s hilarious.

Mycatisahacker Fri 19-Apr-19 21:48:31

so what if they are antagonised

Such utter arrogance and a total lack of understanding of other people’s lives.

Sad really that you can get as old as gransnet and still retain the selfishness of s teenager.

Anja Fri 19-Apr-19 22:07:03

Hilarious isn’t it? But we’re ok ...it’s not us who is going to suffer the consequences.

All I can say is that is pathetic and as for those who have to get personal and start calling people names then you really ought to take a good look at your own post.

Teenagers are not selfish by the way, but often very open to new ideas and passionate about causes. So keep your little snipes for those who appreciate them and have the same ‘values’ as yourself. You do not progress your arguement in any way.

Anja Fri 19-Apr-19 22:11:20

When I think about my loveky grandchildren and the future they face I want to cry ?

Gonegirl Fri 19-Apr-19 22:26:16

I'm quite surprised at the hatred on here. And it really does seem to be hatred. Why? [Confused]

GabriellaG54 Fri 19-Apr-19 22:29:38

TerriBull
There's gaffe and there's gaff and gaff
Google is your friend.

Mycatisahacker Fri 19-Apr-19 22:31:26

See I look at my grandchildren and never cry because they are as passionate as our whole family about this issue but equally understand that to cause the upset to thousands Of generally poor people who havnt been able to work this week is disgusting.

But then my children/ grandchildren are working class kids who have jobs in the holidays.

They don’t have Easter off.

Mycatisahacker Fri 19-Apr-19 22:32:24

Hatred?

No disagreeing with you isn’t hate it’s just an opposite opinion.

Gonegirl Fri 19-Apr-19 22:37:45

I'm sorry but there's definitely a lot of hatred on this thread, and I don't understand it. I can see it would be expected on Brexit threads but on a thread about protecting the earth? It's just weird.

Gonegirl Fri 19-Apr-19 22:44:37

And btw mycatetc, my grandson has a job as well. That's why he won't be in London tomorrow. But I'm so glad he's done his bit.

Callistemon Fri 19-Apr-19 22:51:11

Well, Anja, I didn't get on me bike but I did get off me backside and planted some bee-friendly plants in the garden and have some baby trees being carefully nurtured along although goodness knows where I will plant them as the garden is pretty full already of bee friendly plants, trees and shrubs. Then I had a chat with DD who is saving the planet and the reef over in Oz and we had a chat about a woman she knows who is probably, singly, doing more to save marine life than all those protestors combined.
Hope that is OK.

Callistemon Fri 19-Apr-19 22:53:50

I'm quite surprised at the hatred on here. And it really does seem to be hatred. Why?
Me too, Gonegirl and I ask why? but it seems to be directed at anyone who may question whether or not what the protestors are doing is the best way forward and query whether some of them (not all) may be just the teeniest bit hypocritical.

Gonegirl Fri 19-Apr-19 22:56:09

Wow! Who is she. What's she doing?

Gonegirl Fri 19-Apr-19 22:57:58

Sorry. That post was a little late. I was just wondering about the woman saving marine life.

Closing roads to traffic in London reminds us that there is far too much traffic in London anyway. It was actually pleasant being able to walk down Regents Street and Oxford Street instead of it being clogged up with traffic. Loads of tourists and locals enjoyed it actually. So what if he pink boat was plastic, they didn’t create it and it was being reused. They weren’t all drinking coffee out of single use cups, the free food stall was using reusable plates, plenty of water bottles being refilled rather than just thrown away. Plenty of the protesters had used a week off work to attend, some just coming for a day or two, not just the same group of people. Despite all the sneering and put downs, it was actually a really well organised event that was well publicised in advance that has got people talking. Lots of different demographics amongst the protesters - from students, families, grans and grandparents. All the nitpicking and name calling doesn’t detract from the important message they are bringing to the fore. You can be as passionate about a cause as you like but sometimes action is needed. Lobbying and writing to MPs has been going on for years and it’s still given lip service by the politicians who can’t think long term about anything. Let’s hope it gets pushed up the agenda as these protests aren’t going to go away.
