Climate Change Protests - will they make a difference?

There has been so far 3 days of climate change protests in Central London and other locations. They’ve disrupted traffic and inconvenienced a few, but have been in the main peaceful and has had a festival atmosphere. It looks like these protests will continue. Personally I feel climate change is a really important issue and should be the one that our esteemed politicians should be acting on and discussing but they aren’t. I’m in no way part of this group but, with some reservations, applaud their efforts and hope it does bring the issue to the fore. It does highlight how far our police resources are stretched that they can’t be stopped though. If you don’t live or work in the capital you probably don’t care about the protest , but hopefully you do care about the issues, and these protests it may be coming to a town near you. What do others think?

TerriBull you have just written what I was about to, but much more eloquently!

There are so many insulting and patronising posts directed at anyone who doesn't agree with the actions employed by the protestors, very much "them and us".

Callistemon Sat 20-Apr-19 10:29:05

RL is Real Life Alexa, I believe.

Callistemon Sat 20-Apr-19 10:30:13

Gransnet contributors are not the whole demographic of older people. Grans are 1.English speakers who 2. can afford the money to run a computer and don't include 3. grans who are not interested in any weighty matters that are connected with politics
That does sound like a conclusion to a report!

Callistemon Sat 20-Apr-19 10:32:43

Excellent post Terribull and your last paragraph is spot on.

Mycatisahacker Sat 20-Apr-19 10:33:18

Great posts janipat

I think the us and them creeps in when you get celebs and campaigners pontificating to the rest of us and being outed as hypocrites.

Everyone on here is concerned about climate change but that doesn’t mean you think this demo was selfish and damaging in the extreme

Gonegirl Sat 20-Apr-19 10:38:10

I agree with Callis - whatever there.

I don't want to be part of a target group. I don't wanna be surveyed!

Gonegirl Sat 20-Apr-19 10:38:29

Forgot the grin

Gonegirl Sat 20-Apr-19 10:40:37

Can't we ignore the dotty celebs? The protestors were doing fine before they landed! Grrr.... Oars into everything.

Oh, I would like to say a thing or two to that Emma Thompson. Daft cow.

Gonegirl Sat 20-Apr-19 10:41:18

Probably her fault that boat got moved.

Gonegirl Sat 20-Apr-19 10:42:00

They should put that boat on one of the plinths. Be better than that scraggy horse.

Sara65 Sat 20-Apr-19 10:44:07

I am in agreement that we all need to do a lot more! But this dreadful chaos caused by selfish and opinionated people, only make you feel antagonistic towards the whole thing.
The hypocrisy of celebrities like Emma Thompson is astounding, and I really don’t take kindly to being lectured by her! I haven’t been on a plane for the last ten years!
We had a massive family discussion about this yesterday, and I think the general consensus was, that all they are succeeding in doing, is making thousands of people’s lives a lot more difficult, these people, probably doing their best, like most of us, to help slow down climate change

Joelsnan Sat 20-Apr-19 10:47:49

Anja
if only that was so. Most nations are not really getting to grips with the problem. CO2 and other emissions continue to rise and the window of change is getting smaller and closer

Then wouldn't it be better for countries that are making inroads to celebrate their achievements, celebrate benefits reaped and show the tardy countries what is to come and what can be done. There is far more incentive to change when praise is given rather than damnation.
Tardy countries are more likely to get on the bandwagon when they see that the eco friendly programmes are now de rigeur and are not tied to taxation or penalties.

TerriBull Sat 20-Apr-19 11:01:15

I'm not sure the protestors were doing just fine before Emma turned up, to use your wording GG "the daft cow" from Stroud Dr Something or other who invited everyone to take the day off and young Mr Boardman-Pompous do not do the movement any favours either. Or those camped on the pavement with their "one use coffee cup and plastic bottles" and I imagine everyone will be waiting to see if they do a good clear up on their departure.

They need to offload the dilettante element and find some representatives with more gravitas. who can refrain from making asses of themselves.

Callistemon Sat 20-Apr-19 11:03:29

Callis - whatever
grin
It's a plant - bees like the flowers!

Callistemon:

I suppose it does. My impression and it's only an impression is that grans' opinions may be like the general population's opinions. And it looks as if people feel helpless to influence big events other than by their personal efforts.

I believe that huge demos bring the message to many people who previously have not taken much notice of such important events as climate change. Celebs are not angels but their presence alerts more people can than ordinary middle class folk.

Alexa Sat 20-Apr-19 11:34:20

It's a plant - bees like the flowers! (Callistemon)
Isn't it great about the bees of Notre Dame

Alexa Sat 20-Apr-19 11:40:24

TerriBull

"All this just reinforces the "them and us". Just too presumptuous for words. "

It's more than a presumption it's true that there are two main opinions and the nay sayers should be know the imminent danger.

Mycatisahacker Sat 20-Apr-19 11:59:49

Terrybull

Spot on post agree with you totally.

I think this demo has and is actually doing massive damage to get support to tackle this issue.

They are ridiculous so unfortunately they make the issue look ridiculous and frivolous.

Very bad judgment in my opinion

Sara65 Sat 20-Apr-19 12:01:26

Terrybull
I completely agree!

janipat Sat 20-Apr-19 12:16:54

All those totally in agreement with this protest and the form it's taking, can you say how long you think Londoners should have to endure the chaos? I've read comment from some of the leaders saying it will go on until they get what they want, so weeks, months maybe years?

Mycatisahacker Sat 20-Apr-19 12:21:29

Meanwhile the poorest Londoners are suffering dreadfully through job losses and violence escalating as the police have to watch this lot.

crystaltipps Sat 20-Apr-19 12:50:06

I dispute the fact that it’s the poorest Londoners are suffering job losses and violence- what violence? The police haven’t had to bring in the riot squad have they? It’s been civil disobedience yes, but not rioting. How many people have lost jobs? Evidence? It’s not that chaotic - honestly, in fact it’s great to have some traffic free space in central London. I had to get from one side of London to the other and I could go on the tube or walk - or take a bus which didn’t go through the areas where there were protests. Not difficult. They’ve achieved something - people are talking about the issues much more. Yes I have walked through the areas where there were protests and felt perfectly safe.

Gonegirl Sat 20-Apr-19 12:57:05

Exactly Crystaltipps. Makes me angry all this about people losing jobs and the zero hours contracts. I asked where this information came from. Guess what - no replies.

mycatisahacker you appear to be getting slightly hysterical over nothing.

This is the wealthiest part of this country.

Bellanonna Sat 20-Apr-19 12:57:16

I walked through Oxford Circus last week twice and it was all very peaceable. Portaloos in situ and an arrow pointing to the nearest public loos.

Gonegirl Sat 20-Apr-19 12:59:32

It is disgraceful to say anyone will not support this cause because of a few days inconvenience. Does the life of our grandchildren's planet matter nothing to you? Are you really that narrow minded?
