Climate Change Protests - will they make a difference?

There has been so far 3 days of climate change protests in Central London and other locations. They’ve disrupted traffic and inconvenienced a few, but have been in the main peaceful and has had a festival atmosphere. It looks like these protests will continue. Personally I feel climate change is a really important issue and should be the one that our esteemed politicians should be acting on and discussing but they aren’t. I’m in no way part of this group but, with some reservations, applaud their efforts and hope it does bring the issue to the fore. It does highlight how far our police resources are stretched that they can’t be stopped though. If you don’t live or work in the capital you probably don’t care about the protest , but hopefully you do care about the issues, and these protests it may be coming to a town near you. What do others think?

The whole thing is distinctly unedifying and typical of these kind of demonstrations, to which many who are not true CC activists are attracted.
The mess that has been left on Waterloo Bridge and elsewhere and the mess that will be left following the cannabis jamboree in Hyde Park (where many activists have joined the cannabis crowd) means that police are having to remove their detritus so that the rest of us can go about our business.
We in the UK are only too aware of climate change and are, as others have said, doing our best to change our habits to minimise the impact on our planet.
I saw the recent BBC programme which showed the devastating impact of logging and other deforestation.
It's a sobering outlook but contrast the purported aim of the CC rally with their lifestyles and know they are hypocrites of the first water.

Norway is banning the sale of fossil fuel driven cars by 2025. Costa Rica by 2021!

Callistemon Sat 20-Apr-19 20:27:32

and the UK is following France and banning them by 2040

Costa Rica - Costa Rica has been operating on a deficit since 2009. 22% of Costa Rica’s revenue comes from taxing the auto industry, and a large portion of that goes to protection of forests and other forms of conservation. This could result in a heavy financial loss for their already strained financial situation, but rethinking how they get their money could resolve their issues over time.

But well done to them - short-term suffering for long-term gain.

An I the only one feeling!

For the Love of god grow up!!!!! Seriously just grow up!!!!!!

Mycatisahacker Sat 20-Apr-19 21:45:22

Stop dancing and skateboarding prancing and prattling and piss off home. Stop lying about your lives and patronising Londoners. You all fly! Probably far more then most. You all drive and consume.

It’s fine we all do. We all need to address this but really you are coming across as massive twats. Pack up go home and grow up.

Let ordinary people live they lives. And let’s all come together to target this climate change emergency

Skate boarding and dancing doesn’t actislly equate with an emergency really does it.

Grow up

Mycatisahacker Sat 20-Apr-19 21:59:40

I could be hysterical mind!

Going for a lie down with Gonegirl!wink

Urmstongran Sat 20-Apr-19 22:06:12

I think they’ll all go home soon. The end of the Easter break (well, not for students, teachers and the retirees!) but the good weather won’t last and when the rain comes next week they’ll disperse.

Activists are very well organised these days. Social media keeps them in touch with the latest news and plans for disruption.

Just a shame it’s costing us taxpayers so much in the extra police reinforcements and the tow costs for the pink boat, plus the NHS staff sorting out the super glue fools.

Gonegirl Sat 20-Apr-19 22:37:53

mycat Yeah. You cuddle up with me. We'll be alright. ?

Mycatisahacker Sat 20-Apr-19 22:42:25

Great grin I did say your grandson looked a lovely lad by the way.

We disagree on methods and are probably both hysterical grin but agree climate change needs immediate and serious action??

gillybob Sun 21-Apr-19 00:23:27

I think amybe they’ve all gone to smoke “wacky baccy” in Hyde Park ..... groovy man .

If these people think climate change is simply man made then the answer is simple- get rid of the humans and the planet will bounce back again. As an experiment, maybe keep a few of the more primitive peoples e.g. in the Amazon Basin and see how long it takes for mankind to get out of control again.

Nah, finish the lot off straight away; that's definitely the best solution. Last person, switch off the lights and do remember to let all those budgies, rabbits, lions etc. out of their cages first so they all have a fighting chance.

Cows (ruminants) account for 1/3 of the methane in our air and it traps heat for longer.
It's 23 times more harmful than CO2.
Cattle take up 1/3 of the land on earth and that includes land given over to produce cattle feed.
A petrol car driven for 12,500km emits as much CO2 as 1 cow per year.
It's a catch 22 situation as more land is razed worldwide to allow grazing for yet more cattle.

The most important conclusion for ourselves is: Eat much less meat and dairy products. This is one of the most effective ways to reduce our personal carbon footprint and to generally reduce our personal negative impact on the environment.

This doesn’t mean everyone has to go vegetarian or vegan, but if you do eat meat then eat less, make it go further, and try to have a couple of meat free days a week. There are some wonderful vegetarian recipes.

The police whose leave was cancelled will benefit come pay day.

Maggiemaybe Sun 21-Apr-19 08:45:21

True, Annie, though many might have preferred spending time with their families at Easter.

Anniebach Sun 21-Apr-19 09:05:26

They would Maggie

Some police liked this demo as it was peaceful , they didn’t need to call in the riot squad. When I passed by on Tuesday the police were standing around chatting with tourists and drinking cups of tea which people were bringing them. Plenty of overtime pay. It’s the London Marathon next weekend and far more roads will be closed than are affected by this protest I wonder if you will be criticising all those selfish middle class runners for inconveniencing motorists.

Anniebach Sun 21-Apr-19 10:00:07

Middle class runners ? Only the so called middle classes raise money for charity ?

Jabberwok Sun 21-Apr-19 10:07:04

What a silly comment! The Marathon is at the weekend, it comes and goes to a prescribed timetable that people can organise their lives around! and the participants don't create a mountain of rubbish for someone else to clear up! So, little or no comparison!

Anniebach Sun 21-Apr-19 10:33:14

Seems raising money for charities is selfish,

Causing nursing staff to be late for work is acceptable

Anniebach Sun 21-Apr-19 10:34:51

How many have been arrested at the London Marathon ?

Alexa Sun 21-Apr-19 10:45:34

Extinction Rebellion.
_______________

Monica, Gabriella G54 and others please reflect that you are blaming the messengers.
No messenger is ever blameless. The message is that your kids and DGCs are going to suffer pretty badly unless governments make laws to curb big oil and others who would extinguish their lives.

Alexa Sun 21-Apr-19 10:57:01

We are mostly doing our bit for the environment. None of us is an absolute duffer and we all know more or less what is ruining lives.

Some of us grans are too frail to join Extinction Rebellion.

crystaltipps Sun 21-Apr-19 12:04:44

Is campaigning for the environment just for middle class people? One of the criticisms of the protest were all the people are middle class - seems like the new snobbery is to criticise someone for being middle class - strangely usually by middle class people. Hats off to anyone running a marathon - I was using this example as an event which closes down far more roads than this protest - however people don’t just run the marathon for charity plus there is a mountain of litter after the marathon btw. Usually plastic bottles.

janipat Sun 21-Apr-19 12:08:04

crystaltips do you have police in your family? If so you will already know that when police leave is cancelled, any financial loss is borne by the officer concerned, and overtime pay isn't that brilliant. I expect those with families would have enjoyed some time with them. 12 hour shifts and no rest days (which they are all on until this ends) do not make for any family time at all.

As for comparing the marathon, yes those of us that live on or near the route are inconvenienced, but it is for less than one whole day, and does actually achieve its purpose. The police reopen our roads just as soon as they can along the route.
