Climate Change Protests - will they make a difference?

Rubbish is rubbish is rubbish....

I've been thinking about this (could anyone smell burning?) and it's a silly, almost non-argument whether they did or did not leave plastic bottles lying around. Assuming they DID use plastic bottles and photographs seem to show that they did, then whether they cleared them up into a bin or not , they did still used them and they still have to be got rid of.

Oh my God. Desperation kicks in...

Nothing desperate about wondering what is different about plastic bottles used by climate change protesters or a plastic bottle used by anyone else ?

Personally I hate the things but millions of people (including CCP's) seem to like them.

Well if they are being accused of leaving thousands behind and they weren’t actually left by them then it’s relevant. But hey ho don’t let the truth get in the way of a good story.

But..... if they each had one plastic bottle, refilled it from standpipes, and then took them home to use another day.... then that's not single use plastic is it?

The pictures I looked at were of plastic bottles left lying around overflowing bins (not those ridiculous exaggerated photos doing the rounds... which don't even look believable).

But I think you are missing the bigger point though crystaltipps Whether the plastic bottles were left behind or not is almost irrelevant. They still have to be got rid of .

GoneGirl It's no use your being sarcastic. The bottles were left scattered around as litter, therefore they were not being taken home to use another day, were they??

I haven't seen those pictures. I have only read reports of how tidy the protests were.

We have thermos mugs which keep our water nice and cold when we go out anywhere.
Re-usable, refillable thousands of times.
Refilling plastic water bottles is not good - especially if they are left to get warm anywhere.

Yes rubbish is rubbish but when you are using rubbish to rubbish someone’s message than that is an issue, especially if the messengers weren’t responsible. I expect there will be a mound of rubbish on Sunday from the marathon, not just the 50,000 runners but the huge crowds it attracts. Will you be complaining about that as well ? Why people can’t take their rubbish home or find a bin I’ve no Idea.

As for finding a bin in Central London......good luck haven't most of them been removed due to the terrorism threat?

She wasn't being "paraded". There are many young women in our society that we might describe as being "paraded" but she is not one of them.

If we say that she is too young and does not have enough knowledge to be taken seriously on this issue, then surely - at least so far as knowledge is concerned - that might apply to many people who express views on climate change. How many people, on either side of the climate change debate, and whose views are given airtime, are qualified in and working as atmospheric scientists?

There are many people, including "experts", who deny that climate change is due to CO2 emissions. There appears to be many more who disagree but I don't know if that is because they are given more coverage. There is a view that there is another agenda behind the issue of climate change.

I don't feel qualified enough to come down strongly either way but I do feel that the environment is being dangerously degraded by human activity.

I think, if nothing else, this young girl has energised the campaign and has perhaps encouraged more young people to take an interest. She appears to be intelligent and is certainly very good at expressing herself in a foreign language. I think to make such disparaging remarks about her is really not very nice. It is older people who make all the decisions in the world and it seems that increased age does not necessarily equal increased wisdom. If it did, I don't think we'd be in the mess we're in now.

Yes I am worried about her as my commen sense and moral compass hasn’t been overruled,as yours has, by any sort of criticism of this protest.

She is clearly a very vulnerable child.

Still less is extinction of civilised amenities(including breathable air and drinkable water) going to win support.

A choice between two evils. Some people's 'daily tasks' is to amass wealth at the expense of the natural environment and ordinary people.

But also some working on this problem were also held up. Not many people working in the renewable energy industry supports her. They understand the problems.

I've just seen this posted by someone working with XR, don't suppose it will convince the sceptics but here it is anyway:

Saw some fake news about the litter left by XR activists. Quite the opposite in fact! We are separating and recycling, no rubbish left by us at all.
The litter seen in Hyde Park was the result of the 420 Festival last Saturday 20 April when tens of thousands of people descended on Hyde Park armed with booze, weed, and picnics ... which they left behind. I know because I was there talking to some people, raising awareness of the International Rebellion. The 420 ravers wandered into the XR area at Marble Arch and brought their booze etc with them. It was what it was.
All the XR sites are booze and drug free zones and are carefully and thoughtfully managed. We DO NOT litter, nor do we engage in verbal or physical violence.

As I understand it, it's ending tomorrow because Michael Gove is going to meet them and also Diane Abbot.

Why are some people SO cynical? Why do some people think ranting about other people's lives is acceptable? Ranting about a person you don't know and have never met and ranting about a 16 year old. A person of 16 is not a child and can make their own decisions. Mind your own business comes to mind or rather, what pushes your buttons needs looking at in the privacy of your own home.

I think some of us are concerned that although she is 16y old she is on the autism spectrum and has suffered severe depression in the recent past. She is under developed for her age because she had serious food issues.

She has embraced a good cause and that’s highly commendable. But there are concerns for her future mental health as she is almost ‘too focused’ on this to the detriment of all else.
