I bet David Beckham is grinding his teeth!!

Well done him is all I can say. Sporting achievements have nothing to do with politics for goodness sake. Grandmabeach has summed it all up eloquently.

It's nothing...only a title.
I certainly wouldn't afford him (or any other titled person) more respect than anyone else.
He did a 'job' he loved. Got well paid. End of.

I think it was winning that last Olympic Gold Meal that finally pushed his body to breaking point. It was a gladiatorial effort and one that almost pained me to watch. And I'm so pleased that his brother is doing so well in his own sphere also. Andy has overcome the horror of Dunblane and his parents divorce. He also had a physique that meant his body took a long to to grow into itself [imo that is]. I very much hope that he overcomes the physical problems he is encountering now plus the mental problems that happen when a sportsperson has to give up their sport before they are mentally ready to do so.

More respect? what nonsense, I respect a person for who they are and what they do, not their name or title .

Margs Fri 17-May-19 11:08:51

He deserves it far, far more than a wig-wearing piano player, singer of utterly turgid sings, who got his knighthood for singing a re-hashed song at a Princess's funeral......(also agree that Mr Beckham must be seething - not to mention Posh!)

EllanVannin Fri 17-May-19 11:20:58

What about all the unsung heroes in the medical profession whose job is to save people's lives ? There must be hundreds of potential recipients of such awards/rewards. Some of these poor blighters get just about enough to live on !

Lily65 Fri 17-May-19 11:29:30

I've always thought Andy has a rather strangely shaped head.

His brother is quite easy on the eye.

sarahellenwhitney Fri 17-May-19 11:38:21

Apparently, so we have been led to believe ,it is Andy's wife who has been behind the now Sir and Lady Murray. I have always viewed Andy Murray as a unassuming guy whose love of tennis is first and foremost in his life. Do not those who enter the world of sport do so for the interest and challenges they are presented with. They may have a pushy parent /spouse but at the end no one twists their arm and what they achieve is that THEY themselves have put into it. Are they not doing this for their own sense of achievement not just to please mummy/ daddy/wifey.? How many times do we see the frustration when a kick from a talented footballer misses the net and a tennis player slams down their racket but shouldn't titles be confined to the likes of those who have dedicated their lives to saving lives or those whose inventions have made such valuable differences to our lives.Whose ego will this title have boosted most? not I wager Andy himself.

I don’t think any sportsman/woman, pop star, actor etc. Deserve any special recognition for doing something they love and are extremely well paid for.

I watched a snippet of news last night about a children’s cancer specialist who was retiring after a very long career of saving the lives of very sick children . Some of the patients parents were saying how grateful they were to him and they owe him the biggest debt of gratitude that they could never repay . Will he get a knighthood? I very much doubt it .

The whole honours thing is ridiculous. Sir Jimmy Saville anyone? hmm

optimist Fri 17-May-19 12:01:57

Cant stand the man

Missiseff Fri 17-May-19 12:05:28

It's b******s, time they scrapped it or gave it to someone who saves lives not hits a ball

Lily65 Fri 17-May-19 12:07:12

OMG, gilly, was he really knighted?

Anniebach Fri 17-May-19 12:09:19

Agree Margs

okimherenow Fri 17-May-19 12:20:18

Wow what a load of miserable envious sour grapes about a talented young man being recognised by the nation for his talent, his prowess, his role in raising tennis in the minds of children, his perseverance in adversity, his winning golds and silver and Wimbledon...
Indeed he has done more for tennis than any other person in Britain..
And must pay his taxes as known tax dodgers apparently don't get awards...
He is fabulous and I'm delighted for him..

soop Fri 17-May-19 12:28:33

Well done, Sir Andy! grin

aggie Fri 17-May-19 12:36:36

Hitting a ball and giving good example to kids and getting them out to play and exercise does save lives

rascalsgran Fri 17-May-19 15:04:28

I can't believe the amount of nastiness and sour grapes posted about this young man. It seems so typical of this country's media which builds someone up simply to shoot them down again in a barrage of bad manners. Well done Sir Andy.

maryeliza54 Fri 17-May-19 15:07:53

He’s very very supportive of women in sport and has called out sexism in sport, describing himself as a feminist. I believe all honours and titles are ludicrous but given we have the system, then it’s good to see someone like this being honoured.

GabriellaG54 Fri 17-May-19 15:34:25

My OH is addressed as 'Sir' when he shops or being served in restaurants or bars.
You don't need to have a sharp instrument laid on your shoulder to be addressed thus.

lincolnimp Fri 17-May-19 16:09:15

Judy Murray is a very pleasant person who has worked hard to give her son's a decent start in life, and to make the most of their natural abilities.
The fact that she has been thrown into the limelight purely because she has done this is incidental.
Neither did Andy seek fame (unlike many showbiz 'stars'), and he is passionate about his sport.
Why shouldn't he show disappointment when he knows he hasn't give of his best.
Believe it or not, to a true sportsperson, they do care when they lose---because they know they could have done better. They replay in their mind every shot they messed up, and when they win then euphoria takes over.
He has also physically suffered, as well as enduring years of hard slog, away from home and family, travelling many miles at home and abroad, around small tournaments, before he was even heard of.

However, don't start me on the so called sportspeople who play Premier football. Different kettle of fish altogether

Grannysmith Fri 17-May-19 18:19:12

What about a gong for Lewis Hamilton. Four times world champion & not a knighthood in sight. If Sir Bradley Wiggins, Sir Chris Hoy have been knighted what about this brilliant racing driver.

Why lincolnimp ? because footy isn’t a “champagne” sport ? confused

Before we go on about just getting it for playing tennis, it's worth remembering he was also awarded it for his charity work.

Without listing everything it includes his ATP Arthur Ashe Humanitarian Award in recognition of his charity work, such as Rally Against Cancer and Bally against Cancer, his work for UNICEF, United for Wildlife and Malaria No More, a charity match he organised raising £305,000 for two children's charities and other things such as donating £50 for every ace he hit in a year for people caught up in the refugee crisis.

That is by no means an exhaustive list.

I think he deserves it. He is an exemplar of dedication to his sport, he works for young people in sport, he sticks up for women players (and women generally) and from what we read he is extremely popular in the locker room and, naturally, among women players. He broke the mold in appointing a female coach and faced down the criticism and derision. None of this of course means he merits a knighthood for that but he is an all round good guy.

Aepgirl Fri 17-May-19 20:07:26

I don't understand why overpaid sportsmen get these gongs. There are plenty of ordinary, hard-working folk who never get recognised.

maryeliza54 Fri 17-May-19 20:46:01

LH lives in Monaco as a tax exile and last I read of him he was avoiding paying VAT on his latest private jet by buying it through the Isle of Man. FFS - he does not represent the UK despite wrapping himself in the flag. All he does anyway is drive a car fast ???
