I bet David Beckham is grinding his teeth!!

Wow what a load of miserable envious sour grapes about a talented young man being recognised by the nation for his talent, his prowess, his role in raising tennis in the minds of children, his perseverance in adversity, his winning golds and silver and Wimbledon...
Indeed he has done more for tennis than any other person in Britain..
And must pay his taxes as known tax dodgers apparently don't get awards...
He is fabulous and I'm delighted for him..

Agree Margs

Lily65 Fri 17-May-19 12:07:12

OMG, gilly, was he really knighted?

Missiseff Fri 17-May-19 12:05:28

It's b******s, time they scrapped it or gave it to someone who saves lives not hits a ball

optimist Fri 17-May-19 12:01:57

Cant stand the man

gillybob Fri 17-May-19 11:39:03

I don’t think any sportsman/woman, pop star, actor etc. Deserve any special recognition for doing something they love and are extremely well paid for.

I watched a snippet of news last night about a children’s cancer specialist who was retiring after a very long career of saving the lives of very sick children . Some of the patients parents were saying how grateful they were to him and they owe him the biggest debt of gratitude that they could never repay . Will he get a knighthood? I very much doubt it .

The whole honours thing is ridiculous. Sir Jimmy Saville anyone? hmm

Apparently, so we have been led to believe ,it is Andy's wife who has been behind the now Sir and Lady Murray. I have always viewed Andy Murray as a unassuming guy whose love of tennis is first and foremost in his life. Do not those who enter the world of sport do so for the interest and challenges they are presented with. They may have a pushy parent /spouse but at the end no one twists their arm and what they achieve is that THEY themselves have put into it. Are they not doing this for their own sense of achievement not just to please mummy/ daddy/wifey.? How many times do we see the frustration when a kick from a talented footballer misses the net and a tennis player slams down their racket but shouldn't titles be confined to the likes of those who have dedicated their lives to saving lives or those whose inventions have made such valuable differences to our lives.Whose ego will this title have boosted most? not I wager Andy himself.

Lily65 Fri 17-May-19 11:29:30

I've always thought Andy has a rather strangely shaped head.

His brother is quite easy on the eye.

EllanVannin Fri 17-May-19 11:20:58

What about all the unsung heroes in the medical profession whose job is to save people's lives ? There must be hundreds of potential recipients of such awards/rewards. Some of these poor blighters get just about enough to live on !

Margs Fri 17-May-19 11:08:51

He deserves it far, far more than a wig-wearing piano player, singer of utterly turgid sings, who got his knighthood for singing a re-hashed song at a Princess's funeral......(also agree that Mr Beckham must be seething - not to mention Posh!)

Anniebach Fri 17-May-19 11:06:06

More respect? what nonsense, I respect a person for who they are and what they do, not their name or title .

Labaik Fri 17-May-19 11:04:55

I think it was winning that last Olympic Gold Meal that finally pushed his body to breaking point. It was a gladiatorial effort and one that almost pained me to watch. And I'm so pleased that his brother is doing so well in his own sphere also. Andy has overcome the horror of Dunblane and his parents divorce. He also had a physique that meant his body took a long to to grow into itself [imo that is]. I very much hope that he overcomes the physical problems he is encountering now plus the mental problems that happen when a sportsperson has to give up their sport before they are mentally ready to do so.

GabriellaG54 Fri 17-May-19 11:01:07

It's nothing...only a title.
I certainly wouldn't afford him (or any other titled person) more respect than anyone else.
He did a 'job' he loved. Got well paid. End of.

pamdixon Fri 17-May-19 10:55:23

Well done him is all I can say. Sporting achievements have nothing to do with politics for goodness sake. Grandmabeach has summed it all up eloquently.

Grandmabeach Fri 17-May-19 10:41:56

I agree with Cherrytree59 about sour grapes and what do politics have to do with it? Why can we not be pleased that someone who survived the Dunblane massacre has gone on to achieve something that no other British man has achieved for 41 years and been rewarded for it. This has come as a result of sheer hardwork and sacrifice by both Andy and his family. He is also inspiring many younger children to take up tennis.

JenniferEccles Fri 17-May-19 10:38:58

Of course it's well deserved.

For goodness sake Andy was no. 1 in the world before his hip started giving him problems. This was a massive achievement especially for a Scottish lad growing up in an area with no provision for top league tennis.

His mother made enormous sacrifices when it became apparent that her two sons were so talented.

I really can't understand the nasty sneering comments from some on here.

For heaven's sake let's celebrate Andy and Jamie's achievements without any stupid 'empire' comments.

Momof3 Fri 17-May-19 10:25:58

Apart from having been affected by Dunblane Judy Murray has also done a huge amount for grass roots tennis abs is hugely respected in her own right.

Anniebach Fri 17-May-19 10:13:55

He was awarded the knighthood two years

EllanVannin Fri 17-May-19 10:12:44

Beckham should get an award for his body art , yuk yuk.

Pleased about Andy Murray though I thought he'd already been knighted ---Wishful thinking probably.

maxdecatt Fri 17-May-19 10:12:22

When Murray wins he screams and crows with delight, when he loses he whines about his imaginary physical problems. Can you ever forget the twerp "flexing" his non-existent muscles... or the blubbing, snot streaming tantrum when he lost....to Federer at Wimbledon?

annodomini Fri 17-May-19 10:10:34

Andy did not go to America. His training was in Spain where he also studied at an international school.

Anniebach Fri 17-May-19 10:01:42

Glory seeking ? All youngsters who take up sport are glory seekers ?

Floradora9 Fri 17-May-19 09:56:14

Well deserved and he is not like Beckam who is a tax dodger . I did not realise that when Andy's parents split he spent weekdays with his dad . That must have been hard on his mum . He then went off to America at a very young age. His parents sacrificed such a lot to support both sons

Gonegirl Fri 17-May-19 09:51:05

Is "glory seeking" what they're calling winning tennis matches now?

Caledonai14 Fri 17-May-19 09:27:30

Don't forget two Olympic Gold Medals and a silver. smile
