New Liberal Democrat Leader

varian Mon 27-May-19 15:48:50

The EU Parliament elections have seen the Liberal Democrats come second overall with 20% of the vote, coming top in London and increasing the number of their MEPs from 1 to 14.

The LibDems are members of the ALDE (Allience of Liberals and Democrats for Europe), the third largest group in the European Parliament, who have increased their seats from 67 to 115.

Thousands of new members have joined the LibDems over the weekend inspired by a clear message to stop brexit. Sir Vince Cable has announced that he will step down as party leader in July and anyone who joins before June 7th will be able to take part in the election to chose the new leader.

Don't trust Lib Dems they are same as Tory party brought in unnecessary austerity Don't have any new polices.

Mycatisahacker Mon 27-May-19 15:57:56

Brexit will be sorted one way or another by October and then their support will wane agsin.

I really like vince because he was truthful from the start and has great personal charm but they only got so many votes because of Brexit.

Charleygirl5 Mon 27-May-19 16:03:09

I agree, I have never voted Lib Dem before and doubt if I ever will again but they were very clear which way they wanted to go.

I for one would love Nick to come back.

The Liberal Democrats taught a generation of young people that even if a politician makes a pledge, they are still not to be trusted.

Vince Cable sold off the Royal mail at a massively undervalued price, the money paid for the company has nearly all been recouped by the buyers by selling off some valuable real estate that belonged to the Royal Mail, with no benefit to the public and no improvement to the postal service.

The Liberal democrats when in coalitian with the Conservatives not only voted enthusiastically for austerity measures (remember Nick cheering George Osborne before an aid told him that was not a good look) they also voted for Andrew Lansley's Health and Social care bill, which was preparing the NHS for privatisation.

They can be as anti Brexit as they like but a lot of people are never going to forget their previous actions when they had a change to govern.

I'm not sure why those who have never voted LibDem need bother posting here. For those who have supported the party, but never considered joining here are some of the benefits of membership
:

Vote on party policy
Propose policies
Vote in leadership elections
Access members-only training
Be a part of your local party executive
Stand as a council or parliamentary candidate

Certainly a marked contrast to less democratic parties, like the LP, which retains union "block votes", the Tories, whose members are so far removed from the general population, yet will chose our next PM, let alone the so-called "Brexit Party" which is actually a company with few, if any members, other than NF and no policies other than a disastrous no-deal brexit.

I used to like the Lib Dems ( some while ago) but certainly don’t like them now.Whoever replaces Vince can’t be much worse I suppose.
Support for them will fade away once we are out of the EU and they will fall back into the obscurity they are used to.

felice Mon 27-May-19 17:07:55

Nice to hear your explanation Varian, I am very involved with the LibDems here on mainland Europe and we are an active and positive group.
Off out now will pm you later.

Congratulations to Alliance Party Leader Naomi Long who has been elected as an MEP for Northern Ireland. An ally of the Liberal Democrats, she is expected to join the ranks of the ALDE in the European Parliament.

Nominations are now open for the candidates who wish to replace Vince Cable with the current Lib Dem deputy leader Jo Swinson and the party’s home affairs spokesman, Ed Davey, favourites to win the leadership contest. In many ways though, the party’s showing in the EU elections has made the race far more exciting than it was.

Before, any potential successor faced the unenviable task of reviving the Lib Dems’ fortunes, as they slumped in the polls and seemed destined for oblivion – the race to succeed him seemed like the political equivalent of two bald men arguing over a comb. Now, the next leader will inherit a party which came second in a national poll, is the Remain party of the UK, and has a formidable base of activists and local councillors heading into a general election.

When he announced his resignation, Cable said that he was ‘proud to hand over a bigger, stronger party.’ That may well be the biggest understatement of the year.

We would be so fortunate if the Liberal Democrat Party , or indeed any political party in the UK, should ever again have such a great leader

A sad day for the Libs was the death of David Penhaligon, he was so respected

varian Thu 30-May-19 13:00:40

David Penhaligon was mourned by many when he died at the age of 42.

Paddy Ashdown, who was very fit and active until shortly before his death at the age of 77 was one the most remarkable politicians this country has ever seen. He had an astonishing early career as a Royal Marine, served in the Special Boat Service, was an interpreter, a diplomat and a spy. He gave up a glamorous lifestyle in Geneva to become the Liberal PPC for Yeovil, a safe Conservative seat where the Liberals always came a poor third.

He was genuinely interested in helping people and by dint of sheer hard work and a very persuasive personality, gradually built up support, becoming MP and the first Leader of the Liberal Democrats.

After leaving frontline British politics, he accepted the post of the High Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina reflecting his long-time advocacy of international intervention in that region.

Hundreds of people attended his memorial service yesterday at St John's Church in Yeovil. Among those paying public tribute was David Laws, who succeeded him as Yeovil's MP in 2001.

Mr Laws said: "Paddy did some of his best work not just in Yeovil and the United Kingdom, but overseas; in Bosnia; he was a passionate supporter of the European Union and the United Nations.

"But he was very definitely not the 'Citizen of Nowhere' that our current Prime Minister once talked of.

He saw no conflict at all in his loyalty to his home village of Norton-sub-Hamdon, his constituency of Yeovil, his county home of Somerset and his country, but also simultaneously to Bosnia, to the European Union, the United Nations, to the children of Africa he fought for in his Unicef role.

"He rejected a false choice of country or town versus the wider world and he believed instinctively in pulling down the walls and barriers that divide us.

"It is a tragedy that we lost Paddy in our country at a time when he had some much to contribute to the current debates about our future."

"the Tories, whose members are so far removed from the general population, yet will chose our next PM,"

Just to correct you, Varian dear; you do talk such tripe, but with such assurance that at least some people believe you.

The Tory MPs choose two candidates and the party members, so far removed from real life, vote for one or the other.

varian Thu 30-May-19 14:58:02

How could anyone possibly claim that the 100,000 or so Tory Party members who will be in a position to chose yet another unelected Prime Minister, are in any way representative of the general population?

The next Leader of the Liberal Democrats will be chosen by 100,000 or so Party members, but will not automatically become PM. That decision should belong to the electorate.

Funding is the key. The LD's will need money to fight an election so where will it come from?
Apparently, the Tories are losing money dramatically; no doubt Labour. Power is bought (look at Trump) imo..

Talk about Democracy- the new PM chosen by .7 of the population average age 65+ sad

varian Sun 02-Jun-19 15:43:17

Liberal Democrat Deputy Leader Jo Swinson has told the BBC's Andrew Marr that a no-deal Brexit would be irresponsible, and repeated calls for a second referendum.

Jo Swinson, who is running to be the next leader of her party, criticised Conservative leadership hopefuls who have said they are planning for no-deal - likening it to planning for your house to burn down.

Ms Swinson said: "You might get contents insurance but you're still going to lose all your stuff."
