John Bercow has decided not to retire as Speaker whilst there are major issues before parliament. This will no doubt go down badly with the pro Brexit lobby but for most Remainers I suspect that it is good news.

Bercow is a source of interest here in France and they admire the way in which he calls the Hosue to order

Maybe Larry was thinking of the other two Deputy Speakers, Eleanor Laing or Rosie Winterton?

Maddyone hear hear?

Urmstongran Thu 30-May-19 09:58:59

sorry, pressed post!

That said, I’ve read that the Conservative Association in Buckingham (Bercow's seat in Parliament) are looking to deselect him at the next GE. That would of course be breaking with time honoured tradition. That in itself would be deliciously ironic. Please Buckingham, do it.

Alima ??

75% of MP’s oppose Brexit, and Bercow’s one of them. MP’s would have to vote him out, so that’s not going to happen.

What is worse, there doesn’t appear to be a review body of any kind, who could challenge his neutrality or bias. With an autocratic poppycock like Bercow in the job this has to change.

That said

I saw him when visiting the HoC he was tiny but has a presence somehow. He clearly enjoys his job and has an excellent memory. The other thing I think is that HE KNOWS his job, so the MPs can’t put one over him, which is as it should be.

The speaker has a high hierarchical position I think doesn’t he/she?

maryeliza54 Thu 30-May-19 00:16:37

It’s the cut of his jib isn’t it that makes him so adorable #hero❤️??

Ginny42 Wed 29-May-19 23:33:54

I like his style. Imagine keeping on top of all that's going on in the House especially when tempers rise. He's sharp and funny and has a great command of the English language. Amuses me anyway. I also like his attitude to Donald Trump.

maryeliza54 Wed 29-May-19 23:32:50

If you mean he wasn’t born with a silver spoon ....#hero ?

maddyone Wed 29-May-19 23:19:58

I think he’s a pompous upstart.

Labaik Wed 29-May-19 23:13:39

I love him, too #hero

Callistemon Wed 29-May-19 22:49:06

has anyone told him ?
Lindsay Hoyle, I mean!

Ginny42 Wed 29-May-19 21:51:04

LarrythecatdoesntknowitAll after all! I hope for his sake he has some testosterone!

maryeliza54 Wed 29-May-19 21:46:27

She??????She?????????????

LarrythecatknowsitAll Wed 29-May-19 21:42:38

Lindsay Hoyle is fabulous what a shame she’s not got the top job.

Witty and able without the bombastic testosterone.

maryeliza54 Wed 29-May-19 18:50:34

Well I love him

POGS Wed 29-May-19 18:46:36

Bercow has established himself as a Sitting Tennant of the role of Speaker and that is a point that given his reluctance to leave I wouldn't be surprised if there will be challenge for rule change, after all Bercow has said ' twice ' he was leaving the role of Speaker and renaged on his word both times and not adhering to Parliamentary Procedures and Protocol has been a precedent set by Bercow so why not.

The fact Bercow is viewed as some kind of hero in the eyes of those who find it funny where he stands over the European Union Referendum result is in turn confirmation he is not performing his duty as Speaker with the impartiality it requires.

I was hoping Conservative MP Bercow would be replaced by Labour MP Lindsay Hoyle / Deputy Speaker who shows less appetite for grandiosity and holds more respect across both sides of the House. He holds no truck with the ' put you down' pomposity Bercow displays regularly and after years of Bercow what a blessed relief that would be.

Excellent news! Between this and the news from the BJ camp it's been a good day at WM today smile

Spot on kitty the children have got more than enough to squabble about at the moment without throwing this into the playground as well.

Grandma70s Wed 29-May-19 16:59:10

I think he’s brilliant entertainment. Glad he’s staying. I can’t see how tall or not he is,

kittylester Wed 29-May-19 16:46:52

Seriously though, can we be doing with the bother of trying to find a new Speaker as well?

Though he is an obnoxious twerp.

maryeliza54 Wed 29-May-19 14:32:01

Yawn and sigh Alima

Alima Wed 29-May-19 14:16:43

Ooh, must remember those words for the next time Nige gets up your nose. What goes round comes around.

maryeliza54 Wed 29-May-19 14:03:44

Any irritation I mildly feel towards him sometimes is more than offset by the enjoyment of observing the sheer impotent rage and incoherent fury of his detractors. Long may he reign?

LarrythecatknowsitAll Wed 29-May-19 13:38:50

Give him this he can be very very funny.

Still can’t stand him though

maryeliza54 Wed 29-May-19 13:33:05

I just love JB because of the effect he has on the Brexiters. They rage and rage against him and lo he is still there. A wonder to behold.
