As far as I can see not one of the contenders has a clear plan with regard to Brexit.

Without a plan we can’t move on.

Let's just hear the views of these Tory Leadership candidates.

The question now for Johnson is, does he gerrymander votes for Hunt as the easier opponent?

Urmstongran Thu 20-Jun-19 13:59:06

Not Chukka yet varian? I know - it was a joke.
?

Theresa May (not Mat)

varian Thu 20-Jun-19 13:56:07

In a democratic party, the members chose the leader on the basis of one member one vote.

This is happening right now in the Liberal Democrats where two excellent candidates, Jo Swinson and Ed Davey, are competing to replace Vince Cable, who unlike Theresa Mat, has not been pushed out because of failure but is leaving after massive success in the EU elections, local elections, great poll ratings and a boost in party membership.

Callistemon Thu 20-Jun-19 13:48:12

Actually, I meant NO! you are not being cynical
hmm

Urmstongran Thu 20-Jun-19 13:48:03

Ann Widdecombe, the former Tory minister who is now a Brexit party MEP, has told the BBC’s Politics Live that she thinks it would be better if the Conservative party let members whittle down the candidates to a shortlist of two, and then let MPs choose the winner (the reverse of how it happens now).

that actually makes sense.

jura2 Thu 20-Jun-19 13:47:48

Indeed- and they will make personal killings on the spoils of disaster politics- just as Rees-Mogg Senior taught them in his book.

Callistemon Thu 20-Jun-19 13:47:41

Trisher am I being cynical to think that’s what the Tory grandees had in mind when they let May “ascend the throne”

Yes

although I would question if grandee is an appropriate term for some of them.

trisher Thu 20-Jun-19 13:40:58

Don't think so MawBroonsback more sort of practical. After all they must have known she had little chance of getting an agreement. Pink Floyd comes to mind "just another brick in the wall"!

MawBroonsback Thu 20-Jun-19 13:25:23

I think Clive Lewis has a point. But I also think the Tories are quite aware of this, so they will happily pass the poisoned chalice to Boris and then they have someone to blame when it all goes to pot

No surprises there. The terrible Trinity were clear leaders from the outset.
Rocks and hard places spring to mind.

Urmstongran Thu 20-Jun-19 13:22:10

Well Sajid Javid is out of the race now.

It’s between Gove or Hunt to challenge Boris.

Interesting.

Whitewavemark2 Wed 19-Jun-19 16:23:53

Right, I reckon Javid is a goner, unless Johnson can “persuade” some if his supporters to back Javid in the hope that Stewart then gets the boot. Although after last nights showing Stewart needs to up his game if he is lucky enough to get through today.

trisher Tue 18-Jun-19 10:11:19

I think Clive Lewis has a point. But I also think the Tories are quite aware of this, so they will happily pass the poisoned chalice to Boris and then they have someone to blame when it all goes to pot. If we are plunged into a no-deal economic melt-down guess who will be standing in the background ready to take the party swiftly to the right- Jacob Rees Mogg shock

Anniebach Tue 18-Jun-19 10:00:23

I don’t think Tom Watson wants ‘the top job’, he chose to stand for deputy leader. Like many he wants to remain, Corbyn wants to leave . Watson wants a People’s vote, Corbyn doesn’t . Tom isn’t sitting on the fence, Corbyn is.

lemongrove Tue 18-Jun-19 09:54:13

Yes, well, he would say that wouldn’t he??

Whitewavemark2 Tue 18-Jun-19 09:49:20

Clive Lewis MP
@labourlewis

The Tories would rather see the economy crash, the UK fragment & their Party destroyed to secure Brexit. But they’d forgo Brexit to stop Labour winning a GE.
The Tory Party is irrational, extremist and fanatical. It shouldn’t be allowed to run a bath let alone the country.

GrannyGravy13 Tue 18-Jun-19 09:30:20

I think I am in “The anyone but Labour (momentum) camp”
The Labour Party cracks are widening, Tom Watson’s statement yesterday was definitely an attempt for the “top job” which I find horrifying.

Urmstongran Tue 18-Jun-19 09:30:14

The privacy of the ballot box is a great thing. Talk all you like outside of it but it is the proof of the pudding.

Look at the shockwaves at the result of the referendum! People must have been saying they were pro EU (it’s what they told the pollsters after all) but when they were putting their cross on the ballot paper .....

Acquaintances in groups will often say one thing then act differently. Same with Trump’s supporters. ‘Oh no, we couldn’t possibly support him’ they told the pollsters.

GrannyGravy13 Tue 18-Jun-19 09:27:37

Whitewavemark2 I think you just have to go with “a gut feeling” and as a Tory I am not feeling “the love” for any of them!!!!

lemongrove Tue 18-Jun-19 09:26:42

WWM2 it’s an interesting dilemma not only for Conservative members in choosing a leader, but also for the leadership of the LP. In choosing Corbyn, the members have opted for one who would cause the most chaos for the country, so there you are.

lemongrove Tue 18-Jun-19 09:22:59

I think that Gabriella54 is correct in her view of human nature when a few people are together and talking politics.
What an unpleasant post from you mcem in reply to it.
Sorry to burst your bubble but people in Scotland are no more honest in speech than anywhere else.

Whitewavemark2 Tue 18-Jun-19 09:19:30

But if they are all lying? Do you vote for the best at lying, or the best at talking twaddle or the worst at their previous jobs, or the most immoral, or the one likely to cause the most chaos to the country.

Interesting dilemma isn’t it?

GrannyGravy13 Tue 18-Jun-19 09:15:43

I do not believe anything any politician says anymore........it really is the best banana out of a bad bunch!!
