Does anyone else think that Jo Brand's "joke" was in bad taste? Talking about the milkshake throwing she said "Why bother with milkshake when you could get some battery acid"

I appreciate she is anti-Brexit and she is entitled to share her views on that but surely this "joke" was a step too far.

loopyloo Sat 15-Jun-19 07:13:02

Surely not just bad taste but an incitement to violence. Yes the BBC should have edited it out.

Grandma70s Sat 15-Jun-19 05:53:46

The police are not taking any action. Common sense prevails.

Callistemon Fri 14-Jun-19 22:31:55

perhaps you should try getting out of your living room and interacting with those who may have a different opinion than your own. Personally, I have found that people who have a social conscience are very kind, they don’t sit behind a keyboard and complain; they go out and try to improve the lives of those less fortunate than themselves!
However, I'd just like to add that, unless you know lemongrove and what she does or did in life, there was no need for that remark about getting out of her living room and interacting with others.

Really, we do not know anyone's circumstances unless they tell us - posters could be dipping in here occasionally in between their busy lives helping others and doing charitable works, or they could regard GN as a lifeline because they are unable to leave their homes due to disability.

Well done, Glammy57, that is living life to the full in a good way.

farview Fri 14-Jun-19 21:22:34

I always liked her...but no more..we only have to remember the people who have suffered life changing injuries due to acid attacks..not funny Jo..not at all...

Glammy57 Fri 14-Jun-19 20:17:12

Calistemon. On the contrary - I have been too busy doing voluntary work in several countries. When my daughter was a tiny baby we lived on a small island in the West Indies with no running water. The local hospital frequently ran out of blood... I learned to get on with it and raised a kind, intelligent daughter. My husband and I were heavily involved with Normandy Veterans for many years: pushing wheelchairs, escorting elderly people to the lavatory, attending church services, funerals and Remembrance Sunday events. I have dined with homeless people and lords and ladies. No doubt, I have also imbibed a fair amount of Champagne. In my mind this is living life to the full! Not a hedonist, just an ordinary wife and mother.

EmilyHarburn Fri 14-Jun-19 20:10:54

The comment is unacceptable. People in the public eye should be vary careful to set a good example. she should not have made this comment.

Washerwoman Fri 14-Jun-19 20:01:09

Jo Brand preceded her 'joke' about substituting milkshake for battery acid by saying some people are very ,very easy to hate.Well I prefer my comedy to be based around anything but hatred. There are so many other ways to raise a laugh.
And with the sneering tone of voice she meant hate.I have laughed many times at her on the past, but this went way too far and I actually gasped when I heard it.I have no respect for her at all

Helen2244 Fri 14-Jun-19 19:39:13

Jo Brand "joke" very bad taste, could have significant effect on those who would think it is something they should try out.
She deserves to be criticised . No one should say such things. Not sure she cares about what people say or even if her "jokes" rebound. Arrogant.

Grandyma Fri 14-Jun-19 19:01:47

Hi Brands “joke” was absolutely disgusting and she shouldn’t have said what she did. However, this was not a live broadcast so why did the BBC decide to let this go out and not edit it out??

crystaltipps Fri 14-Jun-19 18:18:04

Brand didn’t actually mention Farage so it’s just an assumption. A couple of years ago Farage spoke out about free speech and how people should be entitled to joke about anything, now he calls in the police. Snowflake or hypocrite?

EllanVannin Fri 14-Jun-19 18:01:56

I'm sure I have Glammy57------tuff !

Callistemon Fri 14-Jun-19 17:55:55

Good

Urmstongran Fri 14-Jun-19 17:52:45

Jo Brand has apologised for her on-air joke about throwing battery acid at politicians.

Callistemon Fri 14-Jun-19 17:50:28

it’s something that comes with having truly lived life to the full!
What exactly does that mean? confused

Other people may have lived life to the full - whatever that means, and perhaps heard and seen things that would horrify others, but, as well as shock-proofing, it can make them more compassionate especially where victims are involved.

Usually living life to the full tends to mean a rather hedonistic life-style.

Callistemon Fri 14-Jun-19 17:44:56

She was obviously brought up to have a social conscience, which is lacking in most people these days.
Glammy perhaps you should do some more research before posting.

Jo Brand had a dreadful upbringing, according to reports, if true, and perhaps that explains her jokes against men which some may find funny but others may find tend towards misandry.
I doubt that many people could come through that unscathed but it could explain much.

Buffybee Fri 14-Jun-19 17:43:48

So, say Jo Brand had been in the news for being doused with a milk shake.
Then some comedian or other on the BBC says that it's a pity, when people throw milkshakes they don't use battery acid instead.
Would some of you people on here still find it so funny?

Glammy57 Fri 14-Jun-19 17:40:21

EllanVanin. You have misquoted me.

Glammy57 Fri 14-Jun-19 17:36:20

annifrance. Thanks. It does become tedious responding to these sort of people! x

EllanVannin Fri 14-Jun-19 17:34:38

I precede Jo Brand's work as a mental health nurse because the building I worked in was known in the 50's as an asylum and " dealt with far more things that some of you would never imagine " so it's no big deal that she too had worked in the same field of nursing, except that it wouldn't have been like a prison in her days of nursing.

It doesn't give her the right to have said what she did, knowing that acid which is thrown not only disfigures but also mentally scars for life.

Glammy57 Fri 14-Jun-19 17:32:30

Lemongrove. Gosh, what an unpleasant remark. Perhaps you should try getting out of your living room and interacting with those who may have a different opinion than your own. Personally, I have found that people who have a social conscience are very kind, they don’t sit behind a keyboard and complain; they go out and try to improve the lives of those less fortunate than themselves! I am quite sure that I did not say that having a social conscience entitled one to “say anything”!

annifrance Fri 14-Jun-19 17:20:06

Well said Grammy 57. Saves me posting something longer! Thought of other things to say but you know I can't be bothered.

lemongrove Fri 14-Jun-19 17:18:11

Nope Glammy that doesn’t cut it, but nice try!
You have a social conscience so can say anything?
Lived life to the full?Bully for you.

Glammy57 Fri 14-Jun-19 17:05:55

I have always liked Jo Brand, she’s kind, funny and intelligent. Her mother was a social worker and Jo devoted ten years of her life to the N.H.S. She was a mental health nurse and dealt with things that some of us can’t even imagine. She was obviously brought up to have a social conscience, which is lacking in most people these days. I did not hear the joke but, from what I’ve read, it was a bit “close to the bone”. I shall continue to be a fan, but I’m shockproof - it’s something that comes with having truly lived life to the full!

Rosina Fri 14-Jun-19 17:02:22

I have always liked Jo Brand, and thought her a down to earth and intelligent woman. I am truly shocked that she would utter such stupid comments, given that acid throwing seems to be on the increase and the appalling damage done to victims changes lives forever.
Not her finest hour - by along mile.
