Something to think about

So the GE.

If Johnson fiddles around and doesn’t hold a GE until after 31st October, the new government can with the EUs likely encouragement retrospectively either extend A50 or even revoke.

Cor blimey.

Worth voting for a remain party me thinks. Well those of us who aren’t touched by the madness of Brexit, or lucky enough to have seen the light.

Where have you seen that, Ww2?

Whitewavemark2 Fri 09-Aug-19 13:08:56

On BBC news at lunch time Professor somebody (can’t remember his name)

Professor Vernon Bogdanor, the constitutional expert

It has also been reported in today's Times that there are various theoretical means of stopping brexit, even if Boris Johnson is spurred on by Dominic Cummings to drive us over the cliff.

Some light in the gloom.

Thanks v I just saw it in passing. I knew his face but forgot his name.

In theory the sitting PM can do many actions without agreement of parliament, including declaring war. So he could put off a general election until after 31st Oct I’m sure

Make no mistake leaving without any agreement in these circumstances will be serious. Assuming suppliers are willing to take the risk essential goods could be waved through customs on our side. If there is no agreement on tariffs, full third country tariffs would be levied on our exports by the EU.
If I was exporting to the EU I would be very concerned

Whitewavemark2 Fri 09-Aug-19 15:08:44

EU exports have contracted last quarter

I think BJ is arrogant enough to do almost anything, just hope he isn't allowed to get away with it.

It looks obvious to me that he is planning on a GE because of all the money he has promised to give away. Sounds more like a labour politician to me. Unfortunately people are gullible enough to believe they can have all this without it costing them anything.

At least some of the lost jobs can be replaced by retraining them as customs specialist, going to need a lot of those!

I heard that Whitewave. I also heard someone (?) discussing the fact that the Cons are talking up a GE because they are actually more afraid of Parliament taking control of business.

GracesGranMK3 Fri 09-Aug-19 18:19:20

I am sure you are right Davidhs Fri (09-Aug-19 13:38:51). Meanwhile, we have to put up with this cruel and fake optimism doing the rounds.

jura2 Fri 09-Aug-19 18:26:32

The Cons - oh my - as a native French speaker, I just have to laugh (and cry) ...

jura2 Fri 09-Aug-19 19:00:38

Another thing to 'think about' - today the Pound £ is worth 1 Euro. So finally, we have 'joined' the Euro - somehow. Thanks to Brexiters- well done ... NOT sad

We have been assured that if our unelected PM allows the country to crash into a no-deal brexit on 31st October, a subsequent government taking over after a vote of no confidence and/or a general election could, with the approval of the EU, retrospectively revoke Article 50 so that the UK remains in the EU as the majority of UK voters want.

jura2 Fri 09-Aug-19 19:15:15

Do you have a link for this 'promise' varian?

When my mother spent a year in London and Hastings in 1932- Sterling was 20 Swiss francs (CHF)

When I first arrived in London in 1970, it was 10 CHF

When we bought our house here in 2008- it was 2.50

Today it hit 1.17 sad

thanks varian. So it seems that Johnson, ERG and Cummings pullig the strings of No Deal against the will of Parliament, could ensure that we remain. Wow - this is mind boggling- but yes, I can see it.

All you have to remember is that sovereignty is the Crown-in-Parliament not the dictatorship of a majority. We cannot give in to mob rule.

Green MP Caroline Lucas is proposing that a cross party group of ten female MPs should form an emergency cabinet to save our country from a catastrophic no deal brexit.

Professor Sir John Curtice has said that it's too late to get any deal through parliament before 31 October so we would leave with no deal. He thinks that if an election could be held before Brexit Day the Tories would have a tough time because of the Brexit Party voters but if they can hold it after 1 November they could get a majority because they'd pick up the Brexit Party votes. The divided Remain parties would facilitate this.

So, we really need a united opposition which seems unlikely because JC seems to be adamant that Labour will go it alone.
It's incredible that despite the marches, the petitions and the letters written to MPs JC is immovable.
