And of course, not forgetting those who have worked for them and couldn't leave fast enough but now have that on their CVs to help them in their future careers.

Phheewwwiii. Later this week, I'm off on my third flight this year. I'm away again in September. My excuse is its my Big Birthday year, plus I spent years camping when I couldn't afford any flight at all, ever to any place.

I know I'm well in a tiny minority but honestly - let s/he who is without sin......

I confess to having flights booked (economy) but will get SIL to offset that by planting 200 more trees.

Callistemon you are quite right of course. Before I criticise them I shall try to remember all the wonderful work that these 2 do and all that they give to the world as they work tirelessly and quietly with humility behind the scenes.

No I don't preach at environmental conferences and as I'm being more open about personal stuff than usual, I'll confess to finding the Extinction Rebellion lot tedious.

I'm all for high lighting the need for us to consume less of everything, to make do and mend and to cook food using as many local ingredients as possible. I recognise the need to shout out loud about environmental issues, as well as the impact of austerity on drugs/alcohol/homelessness/family centre/ social care for older people and etc so on.

However, I'm not convinced that bringing London to a standstill, stopping people going to work or, threats to close down Heathrow so folks like me can't fly to Spain with our children and grandchildren, will save the planet. I may be wrong but I do wish they'd all donate to scientific attempts to reduce the waste of the worlds resources, stop letting the taps run when brushing their teeth and turning off lights, (as no doubt most of us were instructed to do when we were children) rather than potentially dangerous other stunts.

The latest gem from the H&M camp is that not only did Elton John pay for their most recent (of 4) flights in a private jet, but he also made “a contribution” to offset their carbon footprint which makes it all okay and we can sleep well knowing how much they are doing for the planet.

What a load of absolute tosh ! Obviously they take us all for idiots .

We are past the point where small painless switches will make a dent now.

The debt has to be paid and it WONT be painless. We pay it now, or later with interest!

I do think they have badly misjudged this.

If you have the means to plant trees plant trees for the sake of planting trees! Not as "credits" or "tokens" to be destructive elsewhere

I do find it tedious that those who live ostentatious lifestyles beyond the dreams of the majority of us then lecture us about what we should be doing to save the planet.
Then swan off on a private yet for yet another holiday (3 in a fortnight?)

I agree with you Iam64, I enjoy rather more holidays in my older years than I ever did in my younger years. And many holidays in my younger years were camping, although as the younger years progressed, we did graduate to a caravan.

We have to remember that the holidays we mere mortals take do contribute massively to the economies of other countries which need our business. Greece for example relies very heavily on tourism, so does Spain, and a number of other European countries. Not to mention the Far East and South America. It’s a double edged sword I’m afraid, simply not cut and dried. However H+M need to consider their situation, it doesn’t matter who paid for their private flights, what matters is that they could easily go first class and leave a much smaller carbon footprint, and whilst they continue to lecture us about this (and other issues) they will lose popularity very quickly.

I've just watched the BBC news which showed a clip of Elton John's statement as to why he lent his home and private plane to Harry and Meghan. He talked about his distress at their bad press, as to their spate of private jet flights. During this news item, A clip of Harry addressing a gathering with one of his environmental speeches somehow just underlined their lack of commitment to an issue he/they say they hold dear. Elton John also pointed out that to mitigate their recent carbon footprints, contributions have been made to various environmental projects. Am I alone in thinking that and waffle, such as Emma's "I've planted a few trees" and her fatuous statement "I'd fly clean if I could" are just self serving "get out of jail free cards". They all know they are being massively disingenuous, they don't care enough to change their lifestyles but still have temerity to suggest everyone else does. In short it just pisses us, the plebs, off. Patronising doesn't even begin to describe it. Someone in their inner sanctum with a grain of nous should really try and convey that to them, otherwise I fear they will continue to become more unpopular, which is a shame.

I don't disagree with those who express irritation at some celebs and royals for talking the talk but continuing to use up many resources by their life styles. The reality is, their life styles are not like those of ordinary folks. So far as the RF goes, they never have been and never will be. Celebs may start out living lives similar to our own but bring in shed loads of cash and everything changes. I can't find it in myself to become as outraged and dismissive of those people as some do. My Polyanna leaning emerge, I think most people do their best, we all fail at times. some people are total narcissists in their approach to life - Mr Trump would top my list. I can get outraged about him, about Epstein and his friends (that would include a member of our RF for sure).

Iam, then they can stop lecturing the rest of us. I understand completely that the lifestyle of those with oodles or money ( or very rich friends) is not my lifestyle which is why it is important that they don't lecture me.

Loislovesstewie, yes I get that but - they're expected to 'do something' and I'm sure their concern for the environment is as real as it is for most of us.
I find the news currently just grim but grim, Syria, wars and famine in the Middle East, in Africa, drug wars in South America. We have an unstable man who believes he's a genius running the US and politicians in the UK most of us have little, if any, faith in.
I'm more concerned about those who look for power in politics and use that power without care for the general population. EG selling off the NHS. Sorry folks - I'll take the dogs out for a walk, that's always a good start to the day.

Will their next trip on a private jet be to Balmoral for a finger wagging rebuke from the Queen?

Are they 'expected' to do something? I'm not so sure anyone expects them to do anything like this - at the moment they're becoming a laughing stock and with the all-women dream team that M has now appointed to advise her you'd have thought someone would have explained it to her and H. I think it's possible to find them incredibly irritating and pointless and be concerned about what's happening across the world.

I suppose they are expected to keep their heads down and act according to certain protocols and patterns. I'm neutral on the RF but his brother and family seem to manage it.
