Is Harry less popular now?

Reading on the BBC News page that Harry is less popular since booking up with Megan. I thought I liked Megan and that she would be a calming influence but now I think she’s influencing him to a ridiculous degree and they are both behaving like Hollywood divas. What are your thoughts?

doesn't matter HOW its funded Grannygravy13 its the hypocrisy of it from these people who tell everyone else how we should be living to save the planet.

Anniebach Sun 18-Aug-19 11:07:08

GrannyGravy what has annoyed me is his speech making on saving the planet, declaring they will only have two children etc, then hoping on jets for several holidays

Lessismore Sun 18-Aug-19 11:07:54

GG, T'is I who is the niggly one.

Callistemon Sun 18-Aug-19 11:08:41

As well as the British security detail that we paid for. Did Spain give us the bill for the five close protection officers from Spanish security forces who joined the group escorting them?

This was a private visit not an official one.

hmm

The royals exactly like other vastly wealthy people in this country and around the world appear clueless as to how ordinary folk live.

I actually don’t have an issue with this.

However I do have a huge issue with the growing disparity between the wealthy and poor as well as the democratic gap this appears to be creating. The wealthy are clearly able to “buy” democracy through political influence. This is a far more serious problem than the sort of nit picking going on in this thread, and focusing on particular individuals.

Not a bad place to hang out for a six day mini-break

Anniebach Sun 18-Aug-19 11:26:29

Bet the queens security team are envious, they get Scotland ,?

GrannyGravy13 Sun 18-Aug-19 11:27:00

I am obviously in the minority here, as I would rather have our Royals than a Republic.

We all do what we can regarding climate change, as a family we are guilty of “frequently flying” due to jobs, family and friends scattered across the globe.

Their “crime” is publicising the problems the world is facing and being fortunate by birth and marriage, not a “hanging offence” in my book.

merlotgran Sun 18-Aug-19 11:34:19

I would rather have a Royal family than a republic but there's far too many of them now shoving their wealth and privilege in our faces.

merlotgran Sun 18-Aug-19 11:35:32

If H&M want to live like celebs who pay for their own lifestyles and security they must do likewise.

EllanVannin Sun 18-Aug-19 11:38:50

There'll never ever be a cessation in travel " to save the climate ". It's what people do whoever they are and I'd imagine that the smaller private jets that people use are far less of a gas-guzzler than the giants of the sky who fly 400 at a time.

I'd rather be and feel safer in a 380 than a small private plane anyway.

Sparklefizz Sun 18-Aug-19 11:44:59

GrannyGravy Like you, I would rather have the Royal Family than a republic ... but I prefer the non-preaching non-hypocritical type of Royalty, of which Harry used to be one. I don't begrudge them their foreign trips, their lavish lifestyle.

I remember reading that Harry has proposed 2 or 3 times to his past girlfriends and was turned down each time because the perks were not tempting enough for the young women to relinquish their freedom ... and I don't blame them. I think this explains why he hung on for dear life to Meghan and wanted to marry so quickly, and has picked someone who enjoys all the attention.

I hope he is happy and I hope it works out, but I would rather never be preached at again by either of them.

Fflaurie Sun 18-Aug-19 11:46:43

I never liked Megan, to me she is a 2 bit actress who was looking to make her name elsewhere, if she had half the class that her mother has, I may gain some liking for her, but she is still acting her part, and not very well.

Callistemon Sun 18-Aug-19 11:50:54

I agree, merlotgran, I prefer to have a RF than a republic and the adverse publicity that some of the young royals attract could be damaging.

The hard work that others carry out is overlooked and perhaps the media is to blame in part.

Princess Anne, for instance, carried out over 500 royal duties last year, aided by her husband, without fuss or fanfare. That is at a time of life when most people have retired.

How many know that her husband, Sir Tim Lawrence, is the unpaid Chairman of English Heritage and succeeded in raising millions of pounds which funded the building of the new footbridge at Tintagel?

Jabberwok Sun 18-Aug-19 12:36:21

Yes, I would far rather have the RF than a republic , unfortunately at the moment the behaviour of these two rather insignificant royals is overshadowing a lot of the good other members of the family do. This is sad because Prince Harry was, or seemed, a thoughtful caring popular young man (invictus games) of whom we could all feel proud, but now seems to be totally in thrall to his attention seeking exceedingly unroyal wife! (Duke of Windsor?!!) which isn't doing the RF any favours at all!
Yes, I did know about Timothy Lawrence! All of them, a quiet no nonsense family who the Sussex's could learn a thing or two from!.

Anniebach Sun 18-Aug-19 12:46:52

The media is to blame, Charles did over 500 royal duties last year.

The queens four children did more royal duties than the younger generation , Edward was third in list of duties.

Anniebach Sun 18-Aug-19 12:49:46

The Invictus Games are held every two years , does Harry take a year off between

paddyann Sun 18-Aug-19 13:07:55

500 "royal duties" you mean they went to 500 events ,cut ribbons or pulled curtains and shook habds and smiled..hardly what the average jo would call hard work ..and they do get handsomely rewarded for it

Anniebach Sun 18-Aug-19 13:31:32

No, I do not mean 500 ribbon cutting hand shaking events .

Jabberwok Sun 18-Aug-19 14:13:13

That's the thing though, getting on with the job in a low key way doesn't sell a newspaper, celebrity tack does!!
My DH met Prince Charles many moons ago at the Royal Welsh Show and found him easy to talk to and genuinely interested in the agricultural machinery that DH had a hand in designing and despite having a tight schedule PC spent, what seemed an eternity, chatting and asking pertinent questions. Not a ribbon to be seen!

Calendargirl Sun 18-Aug-19 14:31:21

The Princess Royal just seems to get on with what she obviously feels is her duty as a royal. Not worried about what people think of her, no nonsense, never trying to be anyone’s favourite royal. I’m sure many of her functions are plain boring, and certainly not headline grabbing. Her sensible outfits and hairdo, no bare legs, gloves most of the time..... yes, some of the next generation of royals should look and learn.

Callistemon Sun 18-Aug-19 14:41:52

paddyann well, I wouldn't want to be doing all that at her age; and she does keep very informed so that she can discuss their particular charity/country's issues knowledgeably with everyone she has to meet.
But I do realise that no-one will ever convince you as you would prefer to live in the Socialist Republic of Scotland.

I 'm surprised that you don't want your Royal Family back again as we had to have a Scottish King on the throne in 1603.
Oh! The irony grin

Anniebach Sun 18-Aug-19 14:55:26

paddyann did you not accept a commission to photograph
the Windsors?

Jabberwok Sun 18-Aug-19 14:58:21

That Scottish king couldn't get to England quickly enough and only visited Scotland once during his dual reign!!! The other Stuart kings hardly ever visited Scotland, much preferring the gentler South!
George 1Vth was the first monarch to fall in love with Scotland! Although a Hanovarian, he had Scottish ancestry to fall back on, which apparently was sufficient to declare this love affair!!!
