Dr Sarah Woolaston MP has joined the Libera Democrats. Great news!

petra Fri 20-Sept-19 10:22:56

Varian
Judging by the Question Time audience last night the majority of people aren't as enamoured with the LibDems as you are.
I would say most voters now see right through Jo Swinson.

GrannyGravy13 Fri 20-Sept-19 10:28:02

I think Jo Swinson has jumped upon the one trick pony which is "revoke Article 50"

(There is footage from 2008 of her in the H of Cs demanding an in/out referendum)

varian Fri 20-Sept-19 11:09:43

The only thing you could judge by last night's QT audience petra is that the Brexit Broadcasting Corporation and their UKIP supporting QT "audience selector* Alison Fuller Pedley, have excelled the.selves in ensuring that the reasonable wish to stop the brexit madness was virtually unrepresented.

Ed Davey was the only voice of reason on the panel and as for the framing of the question about the LibDems being " the most dangerous party in Britain"- it takes the BBC's blatant pro-brexit ias to a whole new level.

Urmstongran Fri 20-Sept-19 11:33:17

Or maybe the Lib Dem’s are ‘the most dangerous party’ because Jo Swinson has stated categorically that she WILL have her way over Brexit.
☹️

Urmstongran Fri 20-Sept-19 12:15:08

Emma Thornberry has said 'The Lib Dems have gotten kind of Taliban, haven't they?
'They've said they're just going to revoke, there's not going to be another referendum.”

GracesGranMK3 Fri 20-Sept-19 12:25:03

Judging by the Question Time audience last night the majority of people aren't as enamoured with the LibDems as you are.

I wouldn't blame the BBC as you do Varian but I would agree it is a very small sample, and a self-selected one. A very poor example to use to tell us what the majority think petra.

varian Fri 20-Sept-19 12:43:59

The QT audience is not self selected.

Large numbers of people apply to be in the audience and they are selected by Alison Fuller Pedley, a former UKIP member, who has done this job for over twenty years and in spite of sharing Facebook posts by the far right group "Britain First" has not been sacked.

She also ‘liked’ a page called “British Patriotic Front”. Both Facebook pages carry extreme racist and ultra-British nationalist content.

Fuller-Pedley’s job gives her responsibility over organising the participating audience for the programme.

GillT57 Fri 20-Sept-19 15:27:59

Even by the usual QT standards, last night was appallingly pro-Brexit, and the standard of audience questions was very poor in general. I had hoped that there would have been a question about The Sun story about Ben Stokes' family, a terrible incident which happened before he was born, in New Zealand. Absolutely shameful IMO. Or about the RNLI farrago. It is becoming Brexit time, not Question time. But, back to the LibDems and their policy; it made me uncomfortable at first, as I would far prefer a People's Vote based on what we know now, besides which, living as I do in a constituency with a pro-Brexit Tory ( in fact, one of John Major's 'bastards'), my vote would count for nothing. Only with a People's vote would I be able to register my opinion, and not have it engulfed by the ERG supporting MP that I am saddled with.

Grandelinquent Sun 22-Sept-19 13:18:51

I've heard a rumour that the Liberal Democrats have been re-named the ILLiberal UNDemocrats. Can this be true?

varian Sun 22-Sept-19 19:46:35

A lie repeated many times does not become the truth.

In the same way abusive nonsense posted on several GN tbreads is still abusive nonsense

Posting such mindless rubbish just reflects badly on the poster.

Lib Dem leader Jo Swinson calls in police over threat to one of her children

www.thescottishsun.co.uk/news/4764518/jo-swinson-child-threat-lib-dem/

This is what has become of our country thanks to the irresponsible rhetoric of the leaders of the leavers and the ultra-brexit supporting gutter press.

Like the late Jo Cox, Jo Swinson is a very brave woman who is prepared to tell the truth about brexit - the damage that it has already done and the much worse damage that could be inflicted on our country if it is not stopped.

She should not have to suffer threats to her own life, let alone that of her child. It is utterly disgraceful.

The Liberal Democrats would rather have a People's Vote before a General Election, but if the GE comes first, or whenever it comes, there are reasons to expect some great gains.

One LibDem target seat is that of Jacob Rees Mogg, who shows arrogant contempt for those who live outside his privileged bubble. He seems to have no idea how normal people live and that many have to struggle to survive, and yet he voted for benefit cuts at every opportunity.

He can be beaten at the General Election. A few months ago the Liberal Democrats won the Council and European elections in his NE Somerset constituency and Rees-Mogg himself now has a Lib Dem councillor.

varian Fri 27-Sept-19 23:05:05

Dr David Nicholl , who wrote part of the medical section of the Yellowhammer document and clashed with Jacob Rees-Mogg is to run as a Lib Dem candidate in Sajiv Javid's WestMidlands seat ofBromsgrove in the next general election. to expose ‘Brexit dishonesty’

Huge congratulations to @HackneyAbbott on being the first black person to do #PMQs from the despatch box. Her appearance is an historic example of the role black people play in shaping our society this #BlackHistoryMonth

varian
What has her colour got to do with it? Either she is a good politician capable of taking on PMQs or she is a black woman.
Do we say Rupa Haq, the coffee coloured MP etc.
We have got to stop identifying people by the colour of their skin perpetuating division and start promoting inclusivity.

varian Wed 02-Oct-19 20:08:05

Dianne Abbot has served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Hackney North and Stoke Newington since 1987. She was the country's first black woman MP as well as the longest serving black MP in the House of Commons. As a member of the Labour Party, she has held various positions in successive Shadow Cabinets; Abbott has been Shadow Home Secretary since 2016.

It is right that parliament should reflect the diversity of the UK population. Dianne has been a doughy champion of her constituents and the Labour our party. She has also been subjected to more racist and sexist abuse than any other MP.

It is good that Jo Swinson has congratulated Dianne on her representing her party at PMQs.

Grany Thu 03-Oct-19 01:09:09

Who funds Jo Swinson? the same backers who support Johnson and no deal. She is a yellow Tory voted for austerity measures more times than some Tories and voted to cut minimum wage and still backs austerity tightening your belt.

Amagran Thu 03-Oct-19 01:33:15

My goodness, Jo Swinson and the LibDems must take heart at the vehemence of their detractors in the media (and reflected here on GN) - they must be doing things right to have got their opponents so worried. I imagine that they will take the level of unwarranted and inaccurate criticisms being levelled at them by supporters of the Labour and Conservative parties as a measure of the threat they clearly present to these parties.

Amagran Thu 03-Oct-19 01:52:47

I do take your point Joelsnan, but people of colour and women have had a long hard fight to achieve equality and respect and the fight is still going on. So, while the idea of not needing to comment on the colour of a person's skin, or their sex, is highly desirable, it is unfortunately still necessary to celebrate explicitly all these 'firsts' for women and ethnic minorities. It is shameful that here nearly 20 years into the 21st century that these 'firsts' are only now taking place. At the same time, though, it is also hopeful.

In 2018 Transparency International received more than 4 million from the EU.

Jo Swinson husband is their Director of Policy, no wonder she is fighting to stay in the EU.

In 2018 the UK's contribution to the EU was 13.2 billion.

The corrupt face of politics making out staying in the EU is best for the UK but really she wants to stay in for her Bank balance and stay on the EU gravy train.

varian Thu 03-Oct-19 08:52:19

I question your information. Here are the Annual Accounts of Transparency International UK, which show the true figures. In the year 2018/2019 the EU made no contribution. In 2017/2018 a grant of £2000 was made by the EU climate change fund. (see page 23 of the Annual Report)

Grany Thu 03-Oct-19 09:01:14

Jo Swinson is the biggest obstacle to stopping a No Deal Brexit. We don’t need the student-politics, tokenistic, revoke-but-actually-working-against-it nonsense, that we are getting from the Lib-Dems. We need them to work with the progressive majority

dragonfly46 Thu 03-Oct-19 09:08:44

Dianne Abbot maybe all those things you say Varian but she was hopeless at the dispatch box and is hopeless in interviews often getting her facts wrong. I wonder how she has managed to stay in parliament so long. Of course she did sleep with JC.

varian Thu 03-Oct-19 09:11:02

I think you will find that those who object most to a Corbyn government are not the Lib dems but a much larger number of former Tories, former Labour, Independents and even some current Labour MPs.
