Dr Sarah Woolaston MP has joined the Libera Democrats. Great news!

varian Thu 03-Oct-19 10:36:30

Responding to Boris Johnson’s speech to Conservative Party Conference, Leader of the Liberal Democrats Jo Swinson said:

"When you strip away the bluff and bluster, this was a speech by a Prime Minister who is determined to crash us out of the EU without a deal.

Fanatically repeating ‘Get Brexit Done’ does not give any comfort to the cancer patient worried about accessing their medication, or the factory worker whose job is on the line. Getting Brexit done puts their lives and their jobs at risk, and that is why Liberal Democrats are working hard to stop it.

The Liberal Democrats are determined to stop Brexit, because the best deal possible is the one we have right now as members of the European Union."

The Liberal Democrats’ most recent recruit Nicola Horlick has revealed there are so many Tory and Labour MPs discussing a defection to the party that there may be a shortage of winnable seats for them at a General Election.

In an interview with i, the high-profile fund manager and City “superwoman” also said she was confident of taking the Chelsea & Fulham seat from Tory incumbent Greg Hands.

Ms Horlick said: “A lot of MPs from both Labour and the Tories are talking to [Lib Dem Leader] Jo Swinson about defecting, but the trouble is we’ve got all our candidates already.”

Liberal Democrat PPCs are chosen by the local party members and there is a rigorous selection process. There are apparently many Remain MPs from both Tory and Labour Parties who would like to join the LibDems and fight a seat as the LibDem candidate at the next general election. Many may have to make a difficult decision.

Here is why former cabinet member and longserving Tory MP Stephen Dorrell has joined the LibDems.

How would teachers vote in a 2019 General Election?

A general election is highly possible in the next few months. Teachers are a critical voting mass as there’s half a million of them! But who would teachers currently vote for?

This time last year, Labour support was holding strong, with 48% of teachers saying they would vote Labour.

Now, this intention has collapsed to just 29% of teachers saying they would vote Labour if an election occurred tomorrow. This is particularly surprising given that 60% of once teachers said they voted Labour in the 2017 election.

You may not remember Stephen Dorrell.

He is an ex Tory health minister who personally profited from & encouraged NHS privatisation in 2015.

Yesterday, Stephen Dorrell joined the Liberal Democrats.

varian Mon 07-Oct-19 18:25:19

Stephen Dorrell was always what was called a "one nation Conservative" but having seen how his old party has changed, he has also changed by becoming more liberal.

It is OK for people to change their political opinions, which is why we need a People's Vote as so many who were fooled in 2016 have now seen how disastrous any kind of brexit would be.

Heidi Allen MP has joined the LibDems

Urmstongran Mon 07-Oct-19 22:55:05

Heidi Allen has been to more parties than Katie Price.

paddyann Tue 08-Oct-19 00:41:03

they're just heading to their natural home Swinson is more Tory than anything else. She has voted WITH the tories more often then even Reece Mogg.Self confirmed feminist Swinson hasn't offered any help or advice to WASPI women when 3.8 MILLION of us have been fiddled out of upwards of £40k each ....why would she its one of the things SHE voted for .As she'll ONLY join a coalition WITH the tories ..I wouldn't get too excited about any announcements she makes re Brexit or anything else really

Urmstongran Tue 08-Oct-19 08:39:04

This hit the news 4 days ago ....

Swinson fails to declare family company was given 3.5m euro by the European Union

“She voted for the LibCon Bedroom Tax that mired millions of the poorest in costs they could not afford. She voted for the LibCon Welfare reforms which attacked the finances of those least able to withstand the onslaught. She voted for the LibCon policy to treble the tuition fees of students least able to pay.

Could it get worse for Jo Swinson? In a word, yes.

“IT LOOKS LIKE JO SWINSON’S PASSION TO STOP BREXIT OR A NO-DEAL BREXIT “AT ANY COST” HAS TERMS AND CONDITIONS APPLIED.

Swinson’s point blank and quite illogical refusal to join the cross-party coalition to prevent a no-deal Brexit has a 3.5m euro explanation. And the irony of the whole context goes to show that the LibDems are as insincere and deceitful as they ever were.”

varian Tue 08-Oct-19 08:39:12

It is clear that the SNP are keen to attack Jo Swinson because she has taken votes from them but that is no excuse to post fake news.

It is not true that the LibDems will only form a coalition with the Tories. The LibDems are or have been in coalition with the Labour party in many Local Councils, the Welsh Assembly and the Scottish Parliament.

However Jo has made it clear that the Libdems will never enter a coalition with a Johnson led Tory Party or a Corbyn led Labour Party.

The LibDems are the strongest Remain party. Many Remainers in Scotland are horrified at the willingness of the SNP to support Corbyn who wants a "Labour brexit" in exchange for the chance to have another shot at destroying the UK.

Urmstongran Tue 08-Oct-19 08:41:51

“This is political dynamite. The European Union gave a 3.5m euro donation to Transparency International, which in peak irony is supposed to be an anti corruption watchdog with a mandate to foster, erm, transparency.

It is run by Jo Swinson’s husband. Has Jo Swinson declared this conflict of interest to the House of Commons? No.

Is that a breach of House of Commons protocol? Yes.

Is it a breach of the law? Yes.

So who is Jo Swinson’s husband? His name is Duncan Hames. He is the director of policy at Transparency International UK.”

varian Tue 08-Oct-19 08:42:27

What is the source of this claim Ug????

varian Tue 08-Oct-19 08:47:19

Jo Swinsons husband has also received money from the George Sorros organisation.

varian Tue 08-Oct-19 08:56:16

Please note that Transparency International UK is not a company but a registered charity

Grany Tue 08-Oct-19 08:59:04

I agree paddyann Awinson is a Tory.
See Heidi Allen has joined the L/D's. She suggests another 20 Tories would like to follow suit.
@joswinson
must be ecstatic, leader of her very own Tory party.

There’ll soon be more ex-Tory MPs that Lib Dem MPs. Lib Dem supporters, how do you feel about your Party becoming the Conservative Part Mark 2?

Lib dems backed by big business and fracking companies

MaizieD Tue 08-Oct-19 09:53:50

Jo Swinsons husband has also received money from the George Sorros organisation.

Soros is a philanthropist. Transparency International is a registered charity. No reason why he shouldn't donate to it.

If you have incontrovertible evidence that Jo Swinson's husband was personally given money by Soros, petra, would you publish it here, with links so we can all access it.

Otherwise, I suggest that you (and Ug) stop trying to smear him by lies and insinuations.

Granny23 Tue 08-Oct-19 10:24:30

No one ever seems to mention that Jo Swinson cannot become Prime Minister because she sits for a Scottish seat. Under EVEL legislation she would have to leave the chamber during any debate that concerned England or England/Wales only, eg education, NHS. Does anyone know if it is her intention to stand in a seat in England at the next GE? Varian?

paddyann Tue 08-Oct-19 10:52:03

Politics is volatile Varian I dont hate Swinson or anyone else who took a seat from us last time round. They were voted in by the public. We'll get the seat back anyway..in the meantime Ms Swinson has ststed she wont join a coalition to form a temporary government...not with Labour ...not with the SNP who have more than double the number of seats she has EVEN with her turncoat tories .So that leaves Tories and she has always been happy to support everything they propose in the H.OF C.You really should look at her voting record Varian its certainly not what anyone would expect of a Lib Dem !!

Granny23 posts- "No one ever seems to mention that Jo Swinson cannot become Prime Minister because she sits for a Scottish seat. My understanding is that English Votes for English Laws may apply to a whole bill, specific clauses or schedules, Lords amendments, a statutory instrument, or specific Budget resolutions.

Two tests must be met for EVEL to apply:

The first test is that the bill (or clause or schedule of the bill), statutory instrument or Budget resolution relates exclusively to England (or England and Wales, or England, Wales and Northern Ireland).

The second test is that it is “within devolved legislative competence”. In other words, that the Scottish Parliament, the National Assembly for Wales or the Northern Ireland Assembly could legislate in their territories on the same matter.

This is entirely reasonable as MPs in English Constituencies deal with UK matters and English matters as there is no devolved Parliament in England.

However there is no reason whatsoever that an MP representing a constituency in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland cannot be Prime Minister. That is just a myth fostered by the nationalists.

I know it will disappoint the SNP, but Jo Swinson will, barring unforeseen circumstances, be the Scottish Liberal Democrat candidate for East Dumbartonshire at the next general election

humptydumpty Tue 08-Oct-19 14:44:08

Am I missing something - wasn't Gordon Brown the MP for a Scottish seat?

paddyann Tue 08-Oct-19 14:57:19

That was before EVEL was brought inhumptdumpty English Votes For English Laws .Announced the day after the Independence referendum in 2014 .Supposedly to calm englands fears about being ruled by anyone but England. It was a nonsense anyway.SNP Mp's have never voted on English matters .
