The end of hopes of stopping a no deal Brexit?
Just announced.
The Queen will be asked by the government to suspend Parliament days after MPs return to work - and a matter of weeks before the Brexit deadline.
The BBC's political editor, Laura Kuenssberg, says it will make way for Boris Johnson's new administration to hold a Queen's Speech - laying out the government's future plans - on 14 October
But it means MPs are unlikely to have time to pass any laws that could stop the prime minister taking the UK out of the EU without a deal on 31 October.
A No 10 source said: "It's time a new government and new PM set out a plan for the country after we leave the EU
The idea of shutting down Parliament - known as prorogation - has caused controversy, with critics saying it would stop MPs being able to play their democratic part in the Brexit process.

Huge spontaneous demonstrations all over the Kingdom

Remainers who have confounded democracy for three years demonstrating about confounding democracy? If it wasn’t so dangerous it would be laughable.

jura2 Wed 28-Aug-19 21:16:57

Well they have changed their tune, big time:

You had one vote

Same as me

Exactly Urmstongran

Why on earth is the *coarse) view of a privileged wealthy Remainer luvvy like Grant in any way significant?

We all know he and other extremely rich luvvies are the greatest "Not In My Back Yard" hypocrites going but get down with the plebs every now and then to show solidarity when it suits them/they are peeved.

lemongrove Wed 28-Aug-19 21:14:34

Hugh Grant! Haha, sounds as if there was drink taken before he posted that twaddle.grin

GrannyGravy13 Wed 28-Aug-19 21:10:18

Sorry Hugh Grant is not representative of the people of the UK however he tweets!!

Urmstongran Wed 28-Aug-19 21:08:46

All the luvvies will be incandescent with rage. As per.

Get over yourself Hugh (expletive laden) Grant. You had one vote.

Same as me.

Annoying isn’t it?

At last, we have a working Prime Minister, all those years wasted under May.

Brexiteers on this forum seem to be proving by their recent posts in this thread that they care little for the security of the supply chain in regard to food, fuel and medical supplies ext. Those supply concerns were laid out in the governments own YellowHammer documents released to the press just two weeks ago.

Therefore we can also take it that the Brexiteers on this forum also care little or nothing for the elderly, the sick the very young and the most vulnerable who inevitably always suffer the most in times of such shortages and hardship.

They also care little it would seem in regard to the hundreds of thousands of jobs that are to be lost in the manufacturing and distribution industries in the event of Britain crashing out of the European Union with no deal.

Even when the above is acceptable to those brexiteers, what is it that we are all to celebrate on the first of November should Britain "crash out" of the EU, other than approximately forty Tory/ERG members of Parliament had held the whole country to ransom for their self-serving gains, and won

jura The consensus is that we have overtaken Trump's USA in the stupidity stakes

Do you have a link for that piece of information? grin

GrannyGravy13 Wed 28-Aug-19 20:59:19

All quiet in our neck of the woods, no peasants revolting, then again we haven’t got many revolting peasants locally ??

Urmstongran Wed 28-Aug-19 20:57:38

Hey Rory Stewart, you once said you'd set up an alternative parliament if prorogation happened. Care to update us on this plan? They're all very quiet....

He was waffling and back pedalling on R4 this morning before the proroging announcement was made.
Maybe he knew what was going to happen?

Day6 Wed 28-Aug-19 20:55:52

Civil revolt has started

Oh jura smile - that is your wishful thinking I'm afraid.

Civil revolt has started also known as Remainers are having another whine-fest

or

Remainers are besides themselves STILL that the Leave vote won

Urmstongran Wed 28-Aug-19 20:49:25

Ruth Davidson just done a Cameron. Was she humming I wonder?

mcem Wed 28-Aug-19 20:47:40

Petition now at 799 000.
I am appalled at this desecration of all that democratic government represents and equally appalled that ostensibly civilised posters are both condoning and even approving such a move.

Day6 Wed 28-Aug-19 20:47:04

*The consensus is that we have overtaken Trump's USA in the stupidity stakes(

That is a sweeping generalisation and your particular view jura.

If Trump is so hated and ridiculed you might be surprised that the betting is he'll get another term in office. He seems to have changed minds in the USA. I don't like him as a man, I think he is vile, but he is a politician who will not back down or be told how to think or behave. Maybe movers and shakers who confront problems, as Boris has done, are needed in government more and more? May danced with Tusk, gave away our bargaining power to the EU and put us on the back foot for three years of futile negotiations.

People who make waves, for the right reason, as Boris has done are needed given our MPs are hypocrites. They were elected on their party manifesto, they voted to trigger Article 50, to respect the result of the referendum - and now look at them trying to overturn the result at every available opportunity.

It's a poor show. A disgraceful performance. Thank goodness for Boris - and I never thought I'd find myself thinking that!

Urmstongran Wed 28-Aug-19 20:38:43

Nobody is "abolishing democracy". Don't be so hysterical. Parliament had 3 years to come up with ideas that commanded a majority and failed miserably. They had ample opportunity to force the government's hand and bottled it.

Now they are screaming because the government isn't going to stand back and let them use their own procedural shenanigans to pointlessly delay Brexit once more so they can spend another 6 months going over the same arguments again and again without reaching any agreement?

What did they expect would happen?

Smileless2012 Wed 28-Aug-19 20:36:37

Many have been weeping since the referendum result that the referendum result still hasn't been implemented jura.

Grandad1943 Wed 28-Aug-19 20:35:01

Urmstongran Quote [Boris (& Dom Cummings) have been quite smart really.

They want an election but Labour has to call a no-confidence vote & Corbyn has fallen into another trap!] End quote.

Urmstongran, your above post makes no sense as Jeremy Corbyn has been stating for the last two weeks that he would place a motion of no confidence in this government immediately on Parliaments recall in September.

It was the other opposition leaders who wished to use parliamentary procedure yesterday to avoid a no-deal Brexit, and in that way forward Corbyn agreed.

That stated, it would seem tonight that those opposition leaders and others that had expressed previously they would not support a motion of no confidence are all on board now for such action.

jura2 Wed 28-Aug-19 20:31:52

Roundly praised by some - but many more weep for the loss of Great Britain as we have known it.

Civil revolt has started ...you ain't seen nothing yet, I believe.

Day6 Wed 28-Aug-19 20:27:05

don't you think that debate and disagreements should be happening within our Parliamentary Democracy as well

Yes I do jura but to the astonishment and disgust of millions, parliament has become a joke. Point scoring and obstructing is the name of the game at present and we are getting nowhere - fast. Why continue with proposal after proposal being rejected because Remainer MPs want to prevent us leaving the EU?

We are leaving - with a deal or without one. I daresay if the EU come up with something the government is happy with, Boris's detractors will block that too. It has become beyond stupid.

The EU has the chance to come up with a new deal if they want to. The ball is in their court and perhaps that will make Remainer MPs happy? If the EU doesn't play ball - well, they will have had the chance - but we DO have to get past Brexit so the government can concentrate on running the country. Most of us are sick of the Brexit wrangling.

Boris is being roundly praised for ensuring we move forward.

I am not the only one who despairs of the HOC and

lemongrove Wed 28-Aug-19 20:26:00

No Grandad what You actually said was ‘I take it you would be quite happy to witness severe shortages etc’
And my answer to you about ‘quite wrong speculation’ meant that you are wrong to imagine I would be happy about it.

Grandad1943 Wed 28-Aug-19 20:21:59

lemongrove, the shorage of food, fuel and medical supplies are not speculation on my part as you state in your post-@-19:46 today.

Those "facts" where contained within the governments own "YellowHamer" documents leaked to the press in the last few days, but of course, you chose to ignore those documents it would seem.

I also believe that Britain should honour the Brexit Referendum result and leave the EU. However, i also believe that Britain must leave with a customs agreement and also remain within the free trade area. That stated, we are where we are in regard to that situation, and for Boris Johnson to prorogue Parliament in pursuit of a no-deal Brexit that he and the ERG group have always desired is by far beyond the pale, and against what the vast majority of people want in regard to leaving the European Union.

Urmstongran Wed 28-Aug-19 20:21:33

Boris (& Dom Cummings) have been quite smart really.

They want an election but Labour has to call a no confidence vote & Corbyn has fallen into another trap!

Labaik Wed 28-Aug-19 20:17:34

And the monarchy was lucky to survive that. It took a while to win people over, and that was mainly because of the affection felt for William and Harry which is now beginning to dissipate....

Smileless2012 Wed 28-Aug-19 20:12:48

Don't you remember the general mood of the public following the death of Diana Grandad? The Queen came in for a lot of criticism then so it's not the first time.
