And where they will go?
Why doesn't Starmer hold another referendum?
The end of hopes of stopping a no deal Brexit?
Just announced.
The Queen will be asked by the government to suspend Parliament days after MPs return to work - and a matter of weeks before the Brexit deadline.
The BBC's political editor, Laura Kuenssberg, says it will make way for Boris Johnson's new administration to hold a Queen's Speech - laying out the government's future plans - on 14 October
But it means MPs are unlikely to have time to pass any laws that could stop the prime minister taking the UK out of the EU without a deal on 31 October.
A No 10 source said: "It's time a new government and new PM set out a plan for the country after we leave the EU
The idea of shutting down Parliament - known as prorogation - has caused controversy, with critics saying it would stop MPs being able to play their democratic part in the Brexit process.
And where they will go?
What i find totally unacceptable in this is that Boris Johnson has now involved the Queen in this extreme action.
By involving the Monarch he has put at risk her sixty-seven-year reputation for being an apex of stability throughout all the crisis that Britain has faced throughout her reign.
Today the Queen has been forced into making what many will perceive as a political decision that was totally unnecessary for the sake of curtailing three days of Parliamentary time to the sole benefit of a sitting government.
The above is totally disgusting, and many younger people will fail to understand the Monarchs actions i am sure.
it is now very clear Revoke and Remain would win by a strong majority. And I am prefectly sure you know that
Wrong I'm afraid jura. I completely disagree.
Many see the EU as intractable.
I am heartened that my Remain friends are also fed up to the back teeth of our Parliament playing games to stop what was voted for happening.
There is VERY strong feeling in the UK (away from GN message boards) that we need to get out now, deal or no deal. The game-playing of a remainer parliament is obstructive and embarrassing. Boris Johnson is winning over many people with his decisiveness and action. (Again - it wouldn't seem like it on GN message boards where Remainer posters dominate. Lots of Leave voting GN members are leaving them to their online echo chambers.)
An agreeable deal with the EU will follow once we leave, I feel sure, but we have to start from a new position of strength.
I wonder who might walk from the Conservatives?
Where does this "end of story" come from. You do what you like Chucky but do NOT think you can dictate to others - how very bad mannered.
The biggest threat to democracy is in the U.K. not leaving the EU. The country voted to leave and if a deal cannot be agreed we have to leave with NO DEAL, end of story! For what it’s worth I voted remain in the referendum but, as the vote was in favour of leaving, I accept that and just wish it was all over.
I do feel that “no deal” should remain on the table, simply because if the EU leaders know that the U.K. will not leave unless there is an agreement, where is the incentive to come to any agreement? There isn’t one.
It is in the EU’s interest to come to an agreement with the U.K.! They need to realise that the threat of the U.K. just going is very real!
Sorry WW, I hadn't read down far enough.
Ruth Davidson "considering her position".
For those who have asked me to expand on my comments I will not be doing so as I very rarely comment on political threads as I find so many people (not all) can get so heated and at times very nasty to one another. In retrospect I should have kept my mouth, or computer quiet and left it to the rest of you.
This is said in a non threatening explanatory way. As you will gather I dislike confrontation.
I think that whichever way you voted, it is clear that the result of the referendum cannot be seen by either "side" as an expression of the will of the people. The margin was too small, the turnout unrepresentative and the parameters not properly set.
From every angle it is a complete mess; and was party politically motivated, rather than carried out in the interests of UK citizens; or in a genuine attempt to think seriously about our relationship with the EU.
BJ, in one of his recent speeches (I believe at G7) started talking (with much enthusiasm and arm-waving) about how there was a clear majority in the referendum, then sort of stalled as even he realised he was talking bollocks, and everyone would know that.
It may be that there is a case to be made out for leaving the EU - there is and has been for a long time a case for thinking intelligently and seriously about our relationship and place within it - but the mess that was the referendum, the preceding campaign and its aftermath of pathetic negotiation is very definitely not the way to go about it.
The only way that it can now proceed is by jettisoning democracy, which is what is playing out before our eyes.
Seems Boris understands the will of the people trumps that of the politicians!
Seems you don't understand our democracy Urmstongran
I know my view will be unpopular on this forum but I am pleased Boris is to suspend parliament in order to set out new legislation in Queens speech on October 14th. There is a stalemate in parliament MP's overwhelmingly voted to leave EU. They cannot agree on what they want. 3 times they rejected May's deal as will not agree to accept the back stop but EU refuses to remove it so logically if result of referendum is to be respected then to leave with no deal is only option left. Suspending parliament is a normal action, Brown and Major both did so with no hooha. It is only the timing in terms of Brexit that can be deemed contentious. This parliament has run from 2017 which is longer than most parliament sittings without pausing for Queen's speech to set out new political agends. Parliament was prepared to vote to reverse result of referendum so refusing to act on voice of democratic election so should not be outraged that Boris has used all parliamentary means available to him to respect democratic vote. If Corbyn is so unhappy lef him call vote of no confidence he will most likely lose. Boris wants to get on with other important domestic agenda and thank heavens we won't have yet another extension that would be rediculously exspensive. Parliament is just angry he was out manoeuvred by Boris.
Reading that Ruth Davidson is set to quit.
The remainers' view on "the will of the people" makes me laugh. Their claim is that the referendum result was the will of the minority. No, it was the will of the majority who voted. People can choose to not vote, and in that case, they abstain. Referendums and elections are decided by winning the majority of votes of those who choose to vote. Abstentions are simply not valid. Remainers have continuously moved the goalposts because they did not get the result they wanted. I wonder if the vote had gone the other way, if leavers would have protested so much. I think not, because it seems that only leavers truly understand the meaning of democracy. The UK as one nation voted to leave. Now let's get on with it, and stop the bickering and uncertainty. Remainers who won't accept the result are the ones who are damaging our democracy. BJ is to be applauded for his stance.
Excellent post Day 6.
Who agreed, where, when ????
@kateHoeyMP
"And this year it had already been agreed by the Commons that we would not sit from September 12th to October 9th so all this talk of a coup etc is just complete remoaner frustration now that it looks like we really will leave on October 31st"
Day6 - 'We cannot get a deal that our Parliament will pass. Fact. The EU won'd Deal, fact'
Well and here we agree. 3 years on, people now realise that project fear was nothing compared to project FACTS - demographics have changed. So the only democratic thing to do is to ask again - Revoke and Remain - or No Deal.
There is only one reason you + Brexiteers, Johnson and ERG do not want to do so - is because it is now very clear Revoke and Remain would win by a strong majority. And I am prefectly sure you know that.
Boris Johnson's patriotic government
I loathe patriotism, I feel no sense of pride or love for my country.
There you go!
Good.
I think the day just got worse ( for some)
What is the point of this snidey little comment?
I don't feel good about this, I feel worried and anxious.
Why do a hard core on here persist on this petty name calling and crowing?
The whole Remainer/Leaver thing?
As I've said before, I have misgivings about the EU, the amount of money wasted being one of them.
Is nobody allowed to be a bit worried? The ghastly Farage and his gang terrify me.
Surely there are shades of thought and we are allowed to have ideas?
Boris is doing this for one reason only - because it is in his own interest. He thinks he will win the next election and be PM. Then he and his cronies can get back control of the country that they consider theirs by right. How much the general population has to pay is neither here nor there to them. They are promising to rebuild school, NHS etc. ignoring the fact they they are the ones that have run public services into the ground. They will give loads of tax cuts, do a bit of patching up and then when it all goes bang there will be cuts to public spending as never seen before. All on the back of Brexit.
Not having a deal is FAILURE
I and MILLIONS of others disagree.
We cannot get a deal that our Parliament will pass. Fact. The EU won't deal. We leave the EU and THEN strike a deal which suits the UK, Ireland and the EU.
We have to move on from Brexit...it is a gridlocked mission. Everyone can see that. I cheer our government for making a move to get out and move forward.
THIS IS PROGRESS - even though a drastic move was needed to make it happen.
At last - a Government with guts.
I think the day just got worse ( for some)
NanKate You understand what you voted for in the referendum but would you mind enlightening me please, with a slightly more detailed explanation than you just wanted to leave. I'm sure many others on here will be interested in your response.
