The end of hopes of stopping a no deal Brexit?
Just announced.
The Queen will be asked by the government to suspend Parliament days after MPs return to work - and a matter of weeks before the Brexit deadline.
The BBC's political editor, Laura Kuenssberg, says it will make way for Boris Johnson's new administration to hold a Queen's Speech - laying out the government's future plans - on 14 October
But it means MPs are unlikely to have time to pass any laws that could stop the prime minister taking the UK out of the EU without a deal on 31 October.
A No 10 source said: "It's time a new government and new PM set out a plan for the country after we leave the EU
The idea of shutting down Parliament - known as prorogation - has caused controversy, with critics saying it would stop MPs being able to play their democratic part in the Brexit process.

'The same right you had to walk around with your placard which could be construed as inflammatory'. Can you explain to me what is inflammatory about the comment 'Defend Democracy' and is that worse than someone shouting 'Wankers' at us ?

SirChenjin Sat 31-Aug-19 17:22:40

Yeah - the Scottish independence referendum was supposed to be the same.

So - answer to my last question Firecracker (given you no longer have a majority)?

Firecracker123 Sat 31-Aug-19 17:19:08

But the EU referendum was a once in a generation vote which Leave won.

Remainers who are trying to overturn the EU referendum are HYPROCRITES.

SirChenjin Sat 31-Aug-19 17:10:34

We did, we lost. Now for the last two years the polls have shown that this result has been reversed.

Put it this way - if the last referendum had shown a (less than 2%) majority for remain, do you think BJ, Cummings, JRM, Farage and all the other extreme right wingers would have accepted that or do you think we’d be facing another referendum (if the polls had swung in their favour for the last 2 years)?

My money is firmly on ‘hell yes’

gillybob Sat 31-Aug-19 16:47:30

I’m really puzzled ( for a change) . How can wanting to stop Brexit be considered democratic? I voted Remain and I’m gutted but we lost the referendum.

Labiak
Only had three abusive comments today whilst walking back from the protest to the car with my Defend Democracy placard, so quite a successful morning really. We have some very nasty people in this country. What gives them the right to do this sad I wonder

?

varian Sat 31-Aug-19 15:12:39

The very fact that anyone (like the majority according to opinion polls for the last two years) who wants to Remain in the EU can be called "extreme in their views" shows just how corrupted the brexit rhetoric has become.

lemongrove Sat 31-Aug-19 15:02:15

Varian all it actually tells you is that there are some awful people fullstop, there are awful Remainers screaming in people's faces too.
Being extreme in your views on Brexit ignores the facts.

trisher Sat 31-Aug-19 14:28:17

Lots of people out in Newcastle demonstrating today all ages. But there were quite a few oldies there. Over 2000 came out to fight for democracy

varian Sat 31-Aug-19 14:25:19

Good for you Labaik. The abuse you suffered tells us a lot about the mentality of these no deal brexiters.

SirChenjin Sat 31-Aug-19 14:21:00

Well done you for going Labaik I’ve just got home after travelling home from a night away at a wedding reception otherwise I would have marched - and I’ve never marched in my life. The way I look at it is if other people marching winds up the pond life then it’s been a success.

Interesting article:

"It might become necessary to destroy British democracy to save it: that’s the argument that is never far from the surface when supporters of a no-deal Brexit flirt with the idea, publicly or privately, of suspending parliament in order to take the United Kingdom out of the European Union by 31 October."
... ...

"There are serious problems with the case for suspension. The first is that while 17 million people voted to leave the European Union, in excess of 30 million people voted in the 2017 general election, and voted for their MPs to have at least a cursory involvement in the issues of the day. Equally importantly, it is likely illegal."

Follow Mike Galsworthy on Facebook or Twitter. He specifically asks people not to cause a public nuisance, such as blocking roads.

I was at a local protest yesterday. It was all very polite and we made sure we didn't get in anybody's way. We even moved so that a delivery van could use an access.

No, so-called leftie extremists aren't the alternative, although the Daily Mail would like you to believe it. To be honest, if they're real anarchists, they probably voted to leave anyway and relish the idea of bringing down parliament, which they see as corrupt. The whole "big idea" is that this is parliament versus people.

gillybob Sat 31-Aug-19 09:15:01

Yes I get that WW but this guy is for real he’s not an actor ( unfortunately ) .

It amazes me how those who are shouting the loudest can’t come up with any sort of alternative ?

SirChenjin Sat 31-Aug-19 09:12:42

Is anyone attending that rally being removed by an armed police officer I wonder?

Whitewavemark2 Sat 31-Aug-19 09:12:29

gilly a big pinch of salt needed where the Daily Wail is concerned, they invented fake news you know.

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-7413139/Stop-Coup-protest-organiser-hard-Leftist-called-Remembrance-Sunday-insidious.htm

And this is the alternative is it ?

growstuff Sat 31-Aug-19 08:41:01

I think you can take that as a given, SirChenjin. Nobody has justified or explained the change of heart of so many of the leading politicians.

Did they believe what they've said in the past or didn't they? Do they believe what they're saying now? Did they vote, believing what was said or what's being said now? Or didn't they have a clue? Do they really not care? Does honesty not matter to them?

SirChenjin Sat 31-Aug-19 08:18:13

And yet, despite their protestations about manipulation, they still haven’t a clue what they voted for or how their vote will affect every one of us living here.

lemongrove Fri 30-Aug-19 20:39:43

GG13 heeheee ?
Well done you! That must be some story....come and tell me all about it in the bar.

Firecracker123 Fri 30-Aug-19 20:38:51

Day 6 bravo great post.

growstuff Fri 30-Aug-19 20:17:54

Yeah! Yeah! Successful manipulation means that you don't even know it's happened. Quod Erat Demonstrandum! wink
