Boris did not turn up to the press conference. It may be that he didn’t want any more heckling!

How rude! I’m very angry with his bad manners. It’s certainly not the way to endear us in negotiation, whatever the way you feel about leaving the EU

MaizieD Tue 17-Sept-19 17:12:09

could it be that Jean-Claude Junker, former PM of Luxembourg, negotiated a very good deal for Luxembourg when in office?

EU members don't have to 'negotiate deals' with the EU about their tax policies. Each state is free to set its own rates; only VAT is supposed to be within a certain %age range. The rest are set by the state. A fact which might confuse those Leavers who like to believe that the evil EU controls every aspect of taxation and governance.

British woman on the news yesterday who had lived and worked in Luxembourg for 24years. She was protesting because she has no idea what willl happen to her. I think if I was in her situation I would be shouting very loudly!

jura2 Tue 17-Sept-19 10:22:49

GG13: 'Why would they travel to Luxembourg they can protest here without the hassle or costs?'

I would suggest you look at a map ... perhaps?

UK citizens living in Eastern France and Western Germany, and Holland - are very very close- a lot closer than travelling from the North of the UK to London, for sure.

I agree. The "Blame Game" seems to have become a national pastime.

Dinahmo Tue 17-Sept-19 10:07:43

There is a theory that Johnson wants these occurrences because he knows that he's not going to get what he wants and so he'll be able to blame his failure on everybody else - EU , Remainers, the Speaker, the man in the street.

Dinahmo Tue 17-Sept-19 10:05:30

Johnson's behaviour is appalling. Someone on Jeremy Vine said that if Churchill faced an antagonistic ctowd he would have gone to the barriers and spoke to them. I saw Shirley Williams at a political meeting during the early days of the SDLP. There were many hecklers in the audience. SW just stood and waited for them to stop, which they did when she didn't react as expected. She was then listened to in peace.

trisher Tue 17-Sept-19 09:56:06

GG13 It all depends how you measure the contributions. And one of the reasons Luxembourg receives such a large contribution is that they host a lot of EU institutions. If you are interested in a more balanced view www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-48256318

It was about 50 expats who have every right to protest, cowardly Johnson didn’t want to give a speech with their protest in the background. surely any politician worth their salt should be able to cope with a small group of hecklers? It’s part of the job. The idea that somehow the EU organised a protest to humiliate the incredible bulk is ridiculous.

MaizieD Tue 17-Sept-19 09:20:23

Could you give us a source for your figures please, GG13?

Grandad1943 Tue 17-Sept-19 09:17:14

GrannyGravy13, in regard to your post @-08:52 today, what has the revenue Luxembourg receives from the EU have in relation to the actions of Boris Johnson while he was there yesterday?

It was purely Johnson who was the coward and Buffoon at that meeting and no other person or subject.

GrannyGravy13 Tue 17-Sept-19 08:52:48

For every € Luxembourg puts in to the EU it receives €34 back.

For every £1 UK puts is to the EU it receives 38p.

Why does such a small country which is according to some on GN flourishing need this?

See attached table.

Grandad1943 Tue 17-Sept-19 08:03:45

Johnson has run away from the reality of the leave situation he created.

He then ran away from his accountability to parliament by proroguing it.

He has now has run away from other European Union leaders and a few hecklers because he had no answers to any of the leave problems.

Not only is he a coward but also a huge Buffoon.

MaizieD Mon 16-Sept-19 22:46:24

Why would they travel to Luxembourg they can protest here without the hassle or costs?

Believe it, or not, GG13, many UK nationals actually live and work on the European mainland. Where it's easy to travel to Luxembourg (and probably nice and cheap). Brexit, particularly no deal Brexit, adversely affects them.

Calling people who are very worried about their future 'rent a mob' is pathetic and reinforces the image of Leavers as being completely indifferent to the havoc their vote has caused.

jura2 Mon 16-Sept-19 22:11:22

Rent a Mob ?!? The hecklers were mostly local British Citizens who feel they are being used a pawns and bargaining chips in Johnson's sick game. I wish I had joined them!

The fact that SNP supporters feel the need to make up nasty lies about Jo Swinson is a positive endorsement .

paddyann Mon 16-Sept-19 21:33:24

Lib Dems are just Tory lite...she's already in talks about a cp alition with her old palsthe tories. After the mess they helped make last time why would anyone vote for them Jo Swinson only increased her vot in East Dunbartonshire by 4%,hardly a lanslide so dont get too excited ..its not going to happen

trisher Mon 16-Sept-19 21:09:55

GG13 I would imagine many of them are working in Luxembourg it has a very high rate of immigration and a thriving economy. I suspect they might be very cross because they would not have had a vote in the referendum. As for tax haven won't Luxembourg come into the new EU tax rules? Isn't this country liable to be a tax haven if Brexit goes ahead?

Barmeyoldbat Mon 16-Sept-19 21:07:33

I am going to vote Lib Dem, always been a labour voter but I am a firm retainer. Also we have have Liam Fox as our MP with a large majority but we are a remain area and I think the Lib Dems will stand more chance in our area.

I think Boris is a disgrace and has made us the lasting stock of Europe with how he has been acting.

On a lighter note, I have just got back from a stage in Holland and I manage to get a few deals, a breakfast deal, a lunch deal, a deal on bike rental and deal on my accommodation for next year. grin

Whitewave ??

Whitewavemark2 Mon 16-Sept-19 20:54:34

Lots of this sort of opinion on social media

Stephen McGann
@StephenMcGann
Runs from the truth. Runs from personal responsibility. Runs from parliamentary scrutiny. Runs from protestors. A national disgrace.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 16-Sept-19 20:52:20

Someone who wasn’t frit in Johnson’s party

John Simpson
@JohnSimpsonNews
Boris Johnson skips a press conference because of a demo. I once watched Margaret Thatcher land in Zambia, charge down the aircraft steps in the dark into the middle of a hostile crowd & give an impromptu presser even though she'd been told people might throw acid at her.

Dinahmo Mon 16-Sept-19 20:41:43

Nanou Apparently the request came too late to change the venue. Anyway, why should they change it just because he's frit?

Too scared to face the press outside Number 10 so he snuck in the back door.

Labaik Mon 16-Sept-19 20:32:29

They could have put a tub of lard there; in fact they could put a tub of lard everywhere he' s supposed to be....
