Tory Party conference in Manchester

Seems MPs have rejected an attempt by the government to adjourn parliament to allow Tory politicians to attend the Conservative party conference in Manchester.

The event, due to start on Sunday and continue until Wednesday, comes the weekend after Labour held its party conference in Brighton and two weeks after the Liberal Democrats held theirs in Bournemouth.

Thoughts on this?

Urmstongran Mon 30-Sept-19 20:02:02

Judging by the harsh comments and bold assertions on various GN threads WWmk2 I really do not think the majority of posters stop & think ‘oh hang on, this poster might be unwell,/have family problems/has just been bereaved’ etc.

Anonymity is exactly that. Few of us here know one another in R.L.

The very fact that you post frequently on the political threads - you seem to play ‘tag’ with varian MaizieD GGmk4 (who has removed herself for the foreseeable). and jura2 (ditto) - would indicate to us here that you (a) have the time and (b) the inclination to join in.

It goes without saying that I’m sorry you are experiencing family issues at present but please, it’s unfair to present this on a plate as a reason for your M.O. when it would not and could not, have been apparent to us.

But mostly, my remark was not addressed to you personally. It was to highlight that I thought Day6 received a put down which I felt undeserved when comparisons could be made elsewhere, more fairly.

Quite honestly I think there is room for both individual comment and opinion as well as links to other sources.

I do both and sometimes more of one thing than the other.

I am posting lots of links at the moment because I am too tired to formulate a reasoned argument because of family issues.

Sometimes is is kinder to stop and think before finding a reason to and opportunity to post spiteful little posts.

Always much more mature to address the argument rather than the person.

trisher Mon 30-Sept-19 19:32:11

Urmstongran if someone posts the anti-labour, anti-Corbyn, rhetoric which is regularly featured in the right wing press and media I can only assume that they don't want to think for themselves.

MaizieD Mon 30-Sept-19 19:22:37

That's you told, then, WwMk2 grin

Whitewavemark2 Mon 30-Sept-19 19:21:43

I am giving a flavour of attitudes on the social media.

Now you might not like the content, but I won’t be shut down by silly posts.

Urmstongran Mon 30-Sept-19 19:18:10

trisher how cutting to say But I suppose you would then actually have to do some thinking. to Day6

Try directing that comment to WWMk2 who CONTINUOUSLY posts tweets ad nauseum!!! 90% regurgitation of other people’s thoughts.

Architects have always thought in three dimensions and designed in three dimensions and have been using CAD (computer aided design) for at least thirty years.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 30-Sept-19 18:50:28

Is there anyone quite so dim as Esther McVey?

Isabel Hardman
@IsabelHardman

Esther McVey is telling Tory conference about “3D architects” who are “doing it on a computer”. I don’t know much about the process of designing buildings but I thought that was quite normal, especially the 3D element ?

Grandad1943 Mon 30-Sept-19 18:32:59

varian, but we as a country are to suffer all the economic losses that you have laid out in your above post, but we all are still to receive tax cuts in the same scenario.

Perhaps the people of this nation misunderstand the economics of this country after being told for many years that austerity was a very necessary evil "to balance the books."

Perhaps the chancellor and Prime Minister believe that somehow we as a people will find a way to group our way through their mixed messages.

varian Mon 30-Sept-19 18:11:10

Today Sajiv Javid, Chancellor of the Exchequer, spoke at the Tory conference offering many wonderful spending promises.

Obviously these are designed to be vote winners but how could anyone believe any of them?.

No-one can possibly know anything about our public finances unless the brexit nonsense is resolved.

There are three possible scenarios_

1 - We remain in the EU. This is the best scenario but not as good as it would have been without this brexit nonsense because in the last three years we as a country have wasted £billions of taxpayers money, £billions of the money of UK businesses and billions of Euros of our EU partners, and most importantly we have lost a huge amount of goodwill and credibility, not just in Europe but around the world where other countries see us as a laughing stock.

2- We have an exit from the EU with some sort of agreed divorce deal. This would mean a two year transition period during which we could plan our future. Obviously this is not as good as retaining EU membership, this would by most estimates,. cost us about 3% of GDP. So the revenues to the exchequer would be that much less.

3- A so-called "no-deal brexit". This would entail crashing out of the European Union with no agreement on the divorce bill, the status of EU citizens in the UK and UK citizens in the rest of the EU, and most importantly the question of the Irish border. If that happened there would be huge disruption to our trade, not only with our EU partners but with the other countries with whom we trade by means of EU trade agreements. All these "divorce issues" would have to be addressed before we could even start negotiating with these countries- who are our closest neighbours and major trading partners. The cost of this scenario is estimated to reduce our GDP by 9%.

It absurd and utterly meaningless for Sajiv Javid to announce any spending plans without these issues being resolved.

MaizieD in regard to your post @17:38 today, the national minimum wage is indeed paid for by employers.

However, there must have been indeed a further"magic money tree" found by the Tory Party. In that, already announced this week are that we are to see more money being given to the buses, the railways, the roads and 5G Broadband when at the same time the Chancellor of the Exchequer announcing that tax cuts are to take place.

Magic money tree indeed, the Tories must have found a whole Amazon sized forest of such trees.

I cannot understand why I feel so doubtful in regard to such wonderful announcements. ?

Day6 Mon 30-Sept-19 17:59:58

Cop out Trisher.

Garnet was known for his racism, as you well know.

trisher Mon 30-Sept-19 17:57:06

Day 6 Actually it wasn't anything to do with racism but your statement
The Conservative Party serves the working classes and people who want to get on much better these days.
I could hear Alf Garnett "It's the CON-Ser-va-tives.

Day6 Mon 30-Sept-19 17:48:33

Oh Day 6 are by any chance some descendant of Alf Garnett?

That is a pathetic, nasty and very cheap jibe, Trisher - beneath you. I am shocked.

I am not nor have ever been racist and I'd like to think my work in some of the most multicultural and deprived areas of Britain has had a lasting and positive effect on people newly arrived in the UK.

For all you know, I might be black or Asian. Yours is an insulting remark.

Being concerned about open door, no cap immigration that Labour favours is not anti-immigrant, or anti-people or anti-anything.

Most countries in the world have policies and monitor closely the people coming in, their rights and the ways in which they will positively benefit the community.

It's called common sense, not racism.

But it suits YOUR left wing thinking that opponents of Labour's recently announced (and roundly criticised) immigration policy are all Alf Garnets.

Grapefruitpip You should have gone to Specsavers

MaizieD Mon 30-Sept-19 17:38:00

The proposal for the minimum wage rise is for it to rise to £10.50 by 2025. That's an increase of 46p per year. Apparently, that is what it is currently being raised by, so continuing at the same rate of increase is just maintaining the status quo...

Labour plans to raise it to £10 in 2020.

Which sounds the more positive?

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-49881980

Of course, this has nothing to do with any magic money trees as it is paid by the employer, not the state.

grapefruitpip Mon 30-Sept-19 17:32:04

twisted bigotry....where?

Grandad1943 Mon 30-Sept-19 17:31:19

Apologies that should have been Ilovecheese in my post above. ?

Impartialandeducated Mon 30-Sept-19 17:29:31

DAY6 Don't feed it!!!! Not only are you perfectly correct, you also lack the twisted bigotry of some. ?

Grandad1943 Mon 30-Sept-19 17:29:13

I love cheese
Very true indeed. ?

Ilovecheese Mon 30-Sept-19 17:24:53

Just heard that the Conservative conference has been discussing raising the minimum wage to £10.50.
This sounds a very positive policy to me, as a Labour supporter, but I wonder what the reaction would have been on here if this had been a Labour suggestion. Cries of "magic money tree! Perhaps

Grandad1943 Mon 30-Sept-19 17:19:21

I find it strange that the with the title of this thread being "The Tory Party Conference in Manchester" there has been so little discussion within the thread on the Tory policies that are being presented at the event.

Last week we had Tory supporters of the forum attacking Labour Party Policies being debated at their conference and vigorous defence of those policies by a number of forum members.

However, this week with the Tory party and its Leader under vicious attack in sections of the press and on social media, we see no rallying of support for those Tory polices or their newly elected leader and Prime Minister. Instead, we have those same Tory supporting forum members on this Tory conference thread still attacking the Labour Party.

Could it be that they wish to divert forum members attention away from the Conservative conference and all its problems? could it be that they find the defence of the Policies being presented in Manchester so difficult that they do not wish to have it discussed even in this Tory dedicated thread? Could it be that they find the behaviour of the Prime Minister totally indefensible, surely not?

However, anyone reading the last few pages of this thread would be left in little doubt that the above is the situation. After all, there are several threads in regard to the Labour Party and their conference still prominent on this News and Politics section of the forum that members could still use if they wish to comment on the Labour Party.

Very Strange Indeed. ?

trisher Mon 30-Sept-19 15:48:26

Oh Day 6 are by any chance some descendant of Alf Garnett?
Still I suppose if you swallow wholesale the output of MSM those are the conclusions you would reach. Wouldn't it be good if we had an impartial press and broadcasting organisations. But I suppose you would then actually have to do some thinking.

Day6 Mon 30-Sept-19 14:38:09

But what you wrote about Labour's immigration policy was much exaggerated, more of a kneejerk response to any Labour policy.

Not true.

I quoted, verbatim, the I newspaper. Take it up with their reporter or go and see the link on 'The Labour Party's Immigration Policy' thread.

Labour want to become the party of immigration - and many see that as a cynical Labour ploy to capture the vote of the newly arrived in the UK. Blair opened the door, Corbyn's Labour intends to open the floodgates.
