Tory Party conference in Manchester

Seems MPs have rejected an attempt by the government to adjourn parliament to allow Tory politicians to attend the Conservative party conference in Manchester.

The event, due to start on Sunday and continue until Wednesday, comes the weekend after Labour held its party conference in Brighton and two weeks after the Liberal Democrats held theirs in Bournemouth.

Thoughts on this?

Yes it is rude and patronising. Like all people on the left, they're always totally right and any other opinion totally wrong, just like the H of C really!

gg13 you have clearly missed some of the extraordinary unpleasant posts made by said poster.

Don’t bother to look for them as they have been zapped.

My post pales into the moderate compared to the language used by said poster.

So no I do not apologise.

Not to worry and really not worth getting into a tizz about it - these type of posters always disappear after a while, and things settle to the usual insults.

So utterly true, but I think she is too dim to understand this.

The problem with Priti Patel’s dog-whistle is that those who hear it will never love her as much as she wants them to.

Who is Okwonga?

Maybe I'm dense WW2 but I'm not understanding your messages very well.

I'm obviously as dim as Pritti!

Boris’ speech scheduled for 11:45am today.

Whitewavemark2 Wed 02-Oct-19 12:30:32

Blimey Johnson’s speech was flat and stale. Nothing like you’d expect from a U.K. prime minister, more like an after dinner speech.

Audience not particularly enthusiastic.

Whitewavemark2 Wed 02-Oct-19 12:32:07

And it’s over. Must be one of the shortest Conference speeches in years but still managed to last an eternity. He said absolutely nothing and conference hall seemed weirdly indifferent. Will be completely forgotten by tomorrow when EU is busily dismissing his shit Brexit plan ~JL

Urmstongran Wed 02-Oct-19 12:41:21

Who is ‘JL’ WWmk2?

His speech lasted 40 minutes. He had some jokes (stale to some, new to me).

He made me laugh when he poked fun at Jeremy Corbyn not going for a general election. Said the public had less say than voting off someone in ‘I’m a Celebrity get me Out of Here’. Hilarious when he said ‘I suppose at least we’d get the opportunity of watching the Speaker of the House eat a kangaroo’s testicle’.

His dad was on the front row laughing uproariously!

MaizieD Wed 02-Oct-19 12:48:38

So now we're supposed to applaud the fact that our PM is a bit of a comedian.

Oh, FFS...

His dad laughing.....er yeah, all the way to the bank.

Remind me again what is Stanley's particular talent.

lemongrove Wed 02-Oct-19 13:05:04

Otwonga, JL .....if you are going to continue this ridiculous quoting ( ad nauseam) WWM2 then you have to name sources properly.

I think a 40 min speech is long enough for anyone ( or did you want to hear more?)?

Conservative commentator Iain Birrell writes-

A true leader would understand that a second Brexit referendum is the only democratic option

Democracy is a fluid process, not fixed on a snapshot of a solitary moment in time.

In South Yorkshire last week I met one thoughtful man who had changed his mind on voting leave after seeing the damage it will cause farmers and small businesses. A polling firm carrying out focus groups among leavers in the region found three out of 20 people selected had switched sides. A Daily Mail survey found a six-point lead for Remain in a fresh referendum.

Brexiteers claim the referendum result is sacrosanct and their foes defy democracy because they are weak and scared.

They echo dictators who claim to be democrats after winning disputed ballots, failing to see how this precious system rests on a web of freedoms and rights rather than a single vote.

These are tough times for our county, with cultural and economic differences inflamed by the Brexit mess and no clear escape path.

As the prime minister rallies his troops, he might remember democracies die through erosion of the values that underpin institutions.

He should dial down his demagoguery, stop inflaming division and start behaving like a true democrat.

They were queuing round the block from very early this morning to get seats to see him btw.
So that’s hardly ‘weirdly indifferent’ .....there was a lot of laughter and applause generally, far more than for poor old T May.
I don’t care for Johnson, and never did, but prefer to see some truth on here from left wingers (instead of them saying that everything is awful.)

Whitewavemark2 Wed 02-Oct-19 13:11:19

Which bit of the speech did you like lemon?

Whitewavemark2 Wed 02-Oct-19 13:18:05

How many standing ovations?

Oh - none - not that enthusiastic then.

£500 seems to be a dear price to pay to listen such limp speeches and non-policy speeches.

lemongrove Wed 02-Oct-19 13:19:15

Most if it, hard to argue against anything really.. it wasn’t a combatative speech at all, more a building bridges one with the EU.

Urmstongran Wed 02-Oct-19 13:20:28

Well grapefruitpip I thought for one you’d like the fact that dear Stanley voted Remain!

And worked for 4 years within the EU. He has good insider knowledge ... I imagine he’s passed a few tidbits onto his son though, so you won’t like that bit.

lemongrove Wed 02-Oct-19 13:20:38

Possibly some wanted more ‘fighting talk’ but at this stage of the negotiations I thought the tone was just right.

trisher Wed 02-Oct-19 13:22:17

The queuing is probanly a result of the security measures rather than an indication of popularity.
Haven't seen the speech, been out, but if someone could post the main point,s apart from the I'm a Celebrity business and the expected Brexit means Brexit, I would like to read them.

grapefruitpip Wed 02-Oct-19 13:23:23

I don't care what Stan voted. He is an entitled, talentless ,snob.

I dislike the way people like him wangle their way onto TV and become " characters"

trisher Wed 02-Oct-19 13:24:08

Did he mention the N Ireland border and the No-mans land in between- probablly not. He's lost the fag packet that was written on!

Urmstongran Wed 02-Oct-19 13:25:24

Yes MaizieD Boris is a bit of a comedian. Surprisingly, he is still well ahead in all the polls. Perhaps the public like to smile a bit. It is allowed, isn’t it?

Jeremy Corbyn can only dream of such popularity. Plus with his droning voice the majority of the public aren’t interested. He certainly isn’t an orator. He cannot hold an audience. I think it’s why he shouts at them!

Whitewavemark2 Wed 02-Oct-19 13:25:56

I think a right winger ought to outline the speech trisher as my outline would be accused of being biased?.
