Why are "Leavers" so angry?
(606 Posts)Watching Question Time, reading GN and listening to others the anger and ire of those who voted leave astounds me. They are it seems prepared to dump everything to get what they want. A constitution, a legal system, parliamentary democracy mean nothing to them. There is only one small party which is actually campaigning to stop Brexit. One will offer a referendum on a deal and one will (so Johnson says) get a better deal or leave with No Deal. So why are they so aggressive? I can only think that they are actually really upset about what they have done. That they realise the Brexit they were sold and voted for never really existed. That the complications of N. Ireland, the prospect of No Deal and huge shortages and the very real economic strictures have just dawned on them. But rather than admit they were misled and possiby wrong they are reacting by blaming everyone else. It's like a toddler promised pudding who knows he has to eat the main course first but is looking at what is being served and screaming "That's too much and I want my pudding NOW!"
ps by passive I mean keep the status quo.
Good question Trisher.
I read a comment some time ago by someone in another EU country that our type of democracy, with 3-4 chambers, is not equipped to decide on the question posed by the referendum. Too many contrasting influences.
In our system it's difficult to get a decisive vote on such a vague question. So frustration follows.
Another answer - prolongued uncertainty results in increased frustration. Probably more for those who thought their will would win than the others, (remainers) who are more passive.
Pantglas2- sorry but what a nonsense analogy.
Another good post jura2.
3b- currently, the French Police and SAS are very effectively controlling the ports of entry to UK. 1000s of SAS type police armed to the teeth on duty 24/7 in Calais, with also massive infrastructure, several rows of very high fences bit razor wire and electric currents- and both French and UK checks done in Calais. This will all go if we crash with No Deal. The illegal immigrants already there know this, and so do all their friends and families on the way or still back home. They are waiting. Fact.
Am I alone in being astonished at the badgering of Leavers on some of these threads? None of your business is the polite answer to the question of why did you vote the way you did.
Would you badger a Muslim/Jewish/Hindu convert in the same way?
Thank you jura2 and grapefruitpip for your valiant attempts at raising the level of debate to try to get some real understanding of the Leave perspective.
I'm off now for a swim in a relaxing tub of treacle.
Grapefruitpip, thanks.
1. the EU does cost money, but we get a lot more back in return
2.No rule has not been with our full cooperation and approval. We have a Veto. Those rules protect standards that keep us all safe, and protect workers, etc. What is wrong with that? The WTO and people like Trump have made it clear that we will HAVE to accept their rules and standards as part of any Deal. We will have no say, and no VETO either.
3. As member of the EU, we definitely could control who came in- via the 3 months rule. The UK CHOSE to not apply checks, this is NOT the fault of the EU.
However, it is clear that Trump and other nations, are stipulating that if we want a Deal with them, we will have to agree to large amounts of Visas for immigrants from those countries.
Hope that helps.
Well some leave voters, did/do realise how long negotiations can take, they also realise that you have to keep "something in your back pocket" as a negotiating tool.
jura2 Leave voters on GN have explained their reasons so many times since I have been on GN (2 years) maybe look back over threads?
Rather than repeatedly telling us all how not angry you Leavers are, could you jot a few pointers down on the screen in answer to the earlier questions please? It doesn't need to be too detailed, and given that you're all very clear about why you voted it shouldn't be that hard to do.
It certainly has not succeeded in getting any answers to any questions, for sure.
Actually it wasn't *GG13 I genuinely would like to know why Leavers feel the neeed to abuse the judiciary and criticise the due process of government.
It is posssible that they are so used to instant gratification that they are unable to wait for a proper agreement. That they never realised how long legislation and agreement takes. I would think this is a real possibility and it stems from a real lack of knowledge and information about our constitutional and legal history. For example they probably don't realise that legislation for women to have the vote took over 50 years to enact. Which makes the three taken to achieve a Brexit deal pale into insignificance.
Perhaps not lemongrove but as I said only one party has actually come up with a policy that Remainers could in theory support. Surely if they are as agressive as you insist they should be railing at al the other MPs? Instead it is the Leavers who have simply been made to wait longer than they expected who are threatening democracy.
Of course it was GG13 ( hasn’t succeeded so far.)
This thread was started with the sole intention of getting an angry reaction out of those who voted leave to prove the OPs point.
Was that answer to which Question lemon? You lost me there.
No riots- some really nasty scenes and threats. But they are definitely getting ready, behind the scenes. Whipped up by Cummings and Johnson, Farage, Yaxley-Lemon, the EDL and BF. Yet ...
Oh jura you do try! However, am sure that all leavers are by now wise to anyone on GN demanding/asking calmly whatever, answers to their many questions.
We had the vote, three years ago, the result may or may not be implemented by Parliament, and that is all anybody knows for certain, unless they possess psychic powers.
In fairness, there has not been civil unrest and rioting from anyone at all Humpty
Very calm lemongrove- how about answering the few questions I have calmly and politely asked? That would be helpful, thanks.
grapefruit .......I see you are taking the ‘less is more’ approach
In fairness, for the last 3 years there has not been civil unrest and rioting from remain supporters despite having 'lost' the referendum...
Joelsnan, please just jot down a few points, please. Nothing too taxing or intellectual just points.
OK I'll try myself.
It would be better to leave because
1. Being in the EU costs the UK money and it is a wasteful organisation
2. Being in the EU means we have to adhere to their rules and we want to make our own.
3.Being in the EU means we can't control who comes into our country.
I dunno? Am I on the right lines?
Now that some Leavers have appeared can we have answers to jura's questions please?
Leavers claim they've been ignored.
The truth is that they are the only ones who have not been ignored.
For more than three years politicians have tried and failed to "deliver brexit". Why? because the cake-and-eat-it brexit is, and always has been, undeliverable.
Many who voted Remain were able to see that before the vote. The promises made were incompatible.
You can never have all the benefits of EU membership without being a member state, making your contribution and observing the rules.
You could never have frictionless trade and no border on the island of Ireland or in the North Sea if the UK is out of the Customs Union and Single Market and you cannot have a border in Ireland without breaking the Good Friday Agreement and you cannot have a border in the Irish Sea without compromising the union of Great Britain and Northern Ireland .
Most of our trade is with our EU partners or with other countries which have trade agreements with us as an EU member country. A trading block of 500 million plus people will always have much more negotiating clout than a country of 67 million.
The inconsistencies in the promises that were made (and many folk believed) are akin to a PM promising that he will obey the law, yet at the same time saying he will go ahead with brexit on 31st October, even without a deal, which is expressly unlawful. Everyone can see both statements cannot possibly be true, yet they just continue to repeat them.
