33 days to go .... What’s the Brexit plan?

Something’s afoot!

The SNP’s embrace – with a public show of reluctance – for the idea of sending Jeremy Corbyn into Downing Street shows the mounting tetchiness among Remainers that somehow Boris will be able to get around the Benn Act, and thereby leave the UK hurtling towards a no deal by the end of next month unless they take action.

What are your thoughts on what’s going on?

Urmstongran Sat 19-Oct-19 18:23:42

I’ve just enjoyed watching a very friendly debate between Dominic Grieve and Steve Baker! They genuinely seemed to like and respect one another, we’re laughing and even shook hands at the conclusion of the interview on Sky News.

Would all debates on Brexit be so informative and polite!

varian Sat 19-Oct-19 18:30:35

Dominic Grieve is exceptionally intelligent and well informed and also far too polite to point out that Steve Baker is an idiot - he doesn't need to because that should be obvious to any well informed intelligent person.

I imagined people seeing jura2 approach and saying ‘oh gawd, she’s here - let’s cross over’.

Really? hmm

Strange imagination....

jura2 Sat 19-Oct-19 18:40:12

Oh dear- sometimes it is best to rise and not respond, for sure.

Jane10 Sat 19-Oct-19 18:42:33

Oh gawd. She's here. I'm crossing over!

GracesGranMK3 Sat 19-Oct-19 18:46:44

Does that include a name change Jane10?

Jane10 Sat 19-Oct-19 18:47:55

No. Why?

jura2 Sat 19-Oct-19 18:53:31

level of debate shows clearly why we are in such a mess, I suppose.

GracesGranMK3 Sat 19-Oct-19 18:58:45

Think about what you said grin

GracesGranMK3 Sat 19-Oct-19 19:05:20

I don't know about you Jura but the tension is wearing me out. Not, please note MPs, that this means I want it over by means of an awful deal.

GracesGranMK3 Sat 19-Oct-19 19:06:10

18:58 was to Jane10.

jura2 Sat 19-Oct-19 19:13:16

GGMK3 - yes, same here re tension- and yet not wanting to let it run us down into an awful deed.

And yet- Jane wins. If that kind of personal attacks and language - on several threads, is acceptable to GN- best to log out.

My thoughts are: stick to the facts.

Check out a wonderful website called fullfact.org

They are an independent source of information and helps you through the fog of misinformation.

We are going to stay in the EU.

all best

It's a time-tested bullying tactic jura.

varian Sat 19-Oct-19 19:35:56

Please do not be intimidated by the bullies jura. You are worth far more than them and many of us really appreciate your posts.

grapefruitpip Sat 19-Oct-19 19:44:39

I dunno? Isn't it pretty obvious that somebody from outside the UK with access to current media is going to have a broader picture of what's going on?

Utter despair really at the snide comments.

GrannyGravy13 Sat 19-Oct-19 20:30:50

jura2 I have a DIL from Denmark, good friends in Sweden, family in Spain Australia and America. I read news on line from many sources and countries

GrannyGravy13 Sat 19-Oct-19 20:50:10

Sorry I hadn’t refreshed, I just answered jura2’s post to me.

I am against all forms of bullying, I might disagree with a persons comments. But to use a football analogy, play the ball not the person.

growstuff Sat 19-Oct-19 21:22:31

Glad to hear it GrannyGravy. So you'll know that playground bullies often taunt victims by telling them they're not welcome in the group.

GrannyGravy13 Sat 19-Oct-19 21:49:02

growstuff I was bullied at my all girls “posh” grammar school, fortunately we moved and my parents let me go to the local mixed comp.

Bullying in all forms is abhorrent.

paintingthetownred Sat 19-Oct-19 21:53:16

Aye. Especially when it comes form the public school lot.

Classic tactic, accuse others or bullying when you are doing it yourself.

Interesting thread.

Not sure how in any which way it is at all inclusive.

Not.

Just to place the thread back on topic, I believe that Johnson personally snatched defeat from the Jaws of victory today.

In leaving out of the withdrawal agreement all guarantees on employee rights, workplace safety, and environmental issues etc Johnson ensured that many Labour MPs who may have wished to "Get Brexit Done" could only vote for the Letwin amendment. The above issues will now be examined closely when the Legal Declaration is brought before Parliament as individual Acts for debate.

Jeremy Corbyn carried out good leadership of the Labour Party in the last few days by concentrating on the lack of such guarantees in the Withdrawal Agreement and continuously reminding his MPs that ensuring employee rights and workplace safety were fundamental Labour movement policy.

Johnson required at least twelve Labour MPs to vote with the Government to ensure the vote. However, I believe only six Labour MPs either abstained or voted with the government.

Added to Johnsons above misjudgment on guarantees of rights, was that of his action in throwing his former allies, the Northern Irish DUP under the proverbial bus, ensured he lost their support when he most required it.

However, if anyone sails their so-called friends down the river they should not complain when they come back and throw their canoe at them.

As stated, lack of political judgment by Johnson ensured his defeat was snatched from the jaws of victory.

nannypink1 Sat 19-Oct-19 22:19:07

I’m just very angry ..like the other 17.4 million people who voted to leave ...we voted out but everything has been done to thwart the diplomatic vote....so disgusted with parliament and the betrayal of diplomacy

Grandad1943 Sat 19-Oct-19 22:41:35

nannypink1, in regard to your post @22:19 today, I am a person who would have supported Johnsons "revised" withdrawal agreement had he not taken all the guarantees on employment rights etc out of the act placed before parliament today.

Therefore nannypink1, if you feel anger that the withdrawal act has not been passed by Parliament, I feel you should direct that anger at Boris Johnson, for it had been his deceit, lies and total misjudgment that has further deepened the severe crisis that Britain already faced prior to today.

Grandad1943 Sat 19-Oct-19 22:47:27

I have to say that I find it deeply ironic that Johnson is now pleading to the European Union that they through their offices should release Britain from EU membership.

So this is "Taking Back Control." ?
