You can bet your bottom dollar that the Misses Wax, Lowe, Stevenson and Misters Fry, Rylance et al are not sleeping on the streets, are still driving or being driven in cars and using their electronic gadgets. Still eating foods transported over thousands of miles, still wearing clothes made outside the UK, still not sorting their rubbish as assiduously as the average Brit, still spouting ignorant hypocritical nonsense.
They make me sick.
All of them, a***** of the first water.

Gonegirl Fri 11-Oct-19 12:37:16

Nobody expects you to change anything Gillybob. XR are making demands of governments, not little old ladies doing their best on not very much.

gillybob Fri 11-Oct-19 12:37:30

You don’t know what I have or have not learned trisher I just tend to choose my sources of learning from places other than these extremist idiots.

janipat Fri 11-Oct-19 12:38:03

Yes I know BK is worse than McDonalds, but not a lot. By supporting BK or McDonald's in any form you are supporting their business ethos. Doesn't matter that it's a veggie burger, go elsewhere to buy it if you truly believe what you've been shouting.

trisher Fri 11-Oct-19 12:38:57

McDonalds is by far the cheapest in central London janipat. I agree it is ridiculous but no more rididculous than posting people eating vegiburgers or buying coffee shouldn't be because they are environmental activists. It's nit picking of the worst order, possibly because some realise the right of the cause but prefer to pretend they don't.

MissAdventure Fri 11-Oct-19 12:39:17

www.ethicalconsumer.org/food-drink/shopping-guide/fast-food-chains

MacDonalds are only third on the list of eateries with a huge environmental impact. Well that's ok then, isn't it?

MissAdventure Fri 11-Oct-19 12:41:24

I wonder if they've heard of packed lunches and flasks?

That's what I would do, if I was concerned enough to protest, because I would hate anyone to think I was a hypocrite.

Gonegirl Fri 11-Oct-19 12:45:37

this is interesting

Gonegirl Fri 11-Oct-19 12:46:10

Well, the police took their kitchen away. God knows why.

MissAdventure Fri 11-Oct-19 12:49:06

Oh dear.
Oh well, I suppose its understandable to give patronage to the very companies whose ethics you object to strongly, if your kitchen has been confiscated.

janipat Fri 11-Oct-19 12:49:46

No trisher it isn't nitpicking of the worst order. You said What would you rather they did? Starved or succumbed to dehydration. They had the choice to go to any of the hundreds of outlets in the city, they chose to go to McDonald's and support them. If they went there because it is the cheapest, how do they think McDonald's achieves this? Common sense dictates because they operate zero hours contracts. So by deduction we can assume their conscience wasn't troubled about supporting a company that has such practices.

Gonegirl Fri 11-Oct-19 12:53:15

* MissAdventure* I'm going get that Ethical Consumer mag for my grandsons for Xmas. You get a print copy delivered, and the online version.

They've definitely grown out of Beano.

Gonegirl Fri 11-Oct-19 12:54:56

Hmmm. I don't think so MissAdventure. But I would be very surprised if any of the them weren't buying veggie versions.

janipat Fri 11-Oct-19 12:58:59

trisher please get your head around the concept people can agree with the aims but strongly disagree with the methods used. It is insulting of you to keep implying that disagreement with and criticism of XR's methods means people are somehow pretending to themselves they don't understand the issues.

MissAdventure Fri 11-Oct-19 12:59:08

Veggie or not, they are third highest on the list of places causing huge environmental issues.

Gonegirl Fri 11-Oct-19 13:00:44

Is it because of cows farting, or deforestation?

I need to read more.

trisher Fri 11-Oct-19 13:04:27

janipat zero hours contracts was brought into this discussion by the people who object to the protest. I have no figures but I very much doubt if there is any organisation supplying food in central London which doesn't rely on zero hours contracts. It is nit picking to accuse people making a protest of letting down their cause because they buy a veggie burger.
Miss A have you camped over night with a flask? You drink it's contents the first day and anything left is B cold by next morning.

MissAdventure Fri 11-Oct-19 13:07:11

No, I haven't camped overnight, but when I'm sure if I was in a city I could find an ethical place to buy coffee to go with my packed lunch.

Callistemon Fri 11-Oct-19 13:07:55

Gonegirl I must take issue.
I don't think that gillybob is a little old lady, unlike you and me.

I rarely go to McDonald's but have been twice recently (didn't eat what I bought, a veggie snack, as it was horrible) but DGS quite likes one occasionally.
The speed of delivery and slickness of service was quite astounding - hence their popularity I suppose.

trisher Fri 11-Oct-19 13:09:01

Interesting that Germany -one of the largest importers of soy for animal feed has introduced a meat tax.-https://www.dw.com/en/germany-meat-tax-on-the-table-to-protect-the-climate/a-49924795
Perhaps our government could do the same.

trisher Fri 11-Oct-19 13:09:30

Sorry link again www.dw.com/en/germany-meat-tax-on-the-table-to-protect-the-climate/a-49924795

maddyone Fri 11-Oct-19 13:09:55

Trisher, don’t try to turn me into a heartless and selfish person.

‘.........eating meat well that’s fine. As long as you have no care or compassion for the people already affected by deforestation and the long term effects on the plant.’

I eat almost no red meat, just the occasional bacon sandwich or steak pie if I go out to eat at a pub. Otherwise, no red meat! I never eat Burger King or McDonalds! I’ve never taken my grandchildren to eat at Burger King or McDonalds. I do enjoy dairy foods such as yogurt and cheese. I eat eggs. I have no intention of giving these foods up.

You do not need to lecture me or anyone else on Gransnet about your ideals. Don’t virtue signal. Others care about the planet just as much as you do, you don’t have a monopoly on planet care.

We still have nuclear weapons, thank goodness. CND achieved very little, except to frighten the population.

trisher Fri 11-Oct-19 13:12:33

janipat if you know something that has been done recently which has caused as much discussion and publicity for climate change could you post it please?

Callistemon Fri 11-Oct-19 13:15:20

Did anyone see the Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall/Anita Rani programme on TV recently?

Anita took two little girls to MacDonald's HQ with a truckload of plastic tat - gifts which McD give away with their Happy Meals.
These little girls had been trying to stop Macdonald's giving away these toys which just end up in landfill and took a petition to the HQ.

It was appalling how the receptionist told these little girls that she would send for someone to see them then sent for security to order them off the premises.

It was just disgusting to see the contempt that this company had for young girls of 7 and 9. I was shocked.

They just do not care.

MissAdventure Fri 11-Oct-19 13:16:19

Yes, but needs must, if you're stuck in the city somewhere without a kitchen.

Callistemon Fri 11-Oct-19 13:22:23

I wish I'd had a burger at McD instead of the pathetic excuse for a cheese toastie which I ordered. It was inedible.
The thing was that nowhere else was open where we were that late at night.
That is the first time I have eaten in a MacDonald's.
And will probably be the last.

However, it was packed. What is the attraction?
