Should she have to come back and face trial for killing that boy? I’ve read about diplomatic immunity. Should it cover killing by the diplomat or his/her family?

I think there will be an outcome of sorts. Best leave it to the authorities, either here or in the US.

Oopsminty Wed 16-Oct-19 15:33:35

I'm not sure what is wanted.

I feel terribly for the family and friends.

But nothing is going to bring their beloved son back.

The family have actually said they don't want her to go to prison.

They just want their day in court I guess.

Many years ago, the American actor, Matthew Broderick was involved in an accident in NI. He was injured as well so didn't flee. Two women were killed. But he didn't go to prison.

I imagine the guilt stays with you forever though.

Without the family’s ‘media circus’ and ‘PR stunt’ the authorities would have done zilch

newnanny Wed 16-Oct-19 15:39:26

I can't quite work out if she actually had diplomatic immunity or not. It is poor she has not come back to face the family. It was an accident not done on purpose so she would most likely only get community service anyway. I feel so sorry for the boys twin though and his parents.

Gonegirl Wed 16-Oct-19 15:43:41

I don't believe that suziwoozie.

suziewoozie Wed 16-Oct-19 15:56:46

Well we’ll just have to disagree on that - the lessons of history are on my side however

Have to admit when I heard that the parents were going to the US I did think, oh dear this sounds like a tabloid stunt but now think they were absolutely right to do so.

It was obviously no use relying on the authorities, both sides of the Atlantic, as it just seems to have been accepted that she had left the UK using diplomatic immunity, probably at the insistence/connivance of the US embassy, and that was that.

These parents have shown that the 'little people' don't have to accept what's dished out. Good luck to them.

suziewoozie Wed 16-Oct-19 16:37:58

I actually think that some of the criticism directed at the family is because it’s the USA that’s involved? If it were say the wife of a Cuban diplomat I wonder if the responses by the critics might have been different?

Gonegirl Wed 16-Oct-19 16:39:48

Don't understand that. confused

merlotgran Wed 16-Oct-19 16:41:21

Neither do I. confused

Gonegirl Wed 16-Oct-19 16:42:02

I'm not saying she shouldn't have to face a court for what happened, either here or in the US, I just don't think the way the family have been advised to handle it is the right way.

merlotgran Wed 16-Oct-19 16:43:03

Has there actually been any criticism directed at the family?

Gonegirl Wed 16-Oct-19 16:44:23

I do think our authorities would deal with it. And I certainly don't blame the family for asking Boris Johnson to look at it.

But not this.

suziewoozie Wed 16-Oct-19 16:45:34

I think the family have handled it very well indeed. We wouldn’t be talking about it at all if they hadn’t gone public. It’s patronising to imply they aren’t thinking for themselves - I think the mother in particular speaks well and from the heart.

Gonegirl Wed 16-Oct-19 16:45:49

Probably only by me it would seem.

(I don't actually know. I think the lowest common denominator has the loudest voice in our press.)

Gonegirl Wed 16-Oct-19 16:46:10

that was to merlot

suziewoozie Wed 16-Oct-19 16:47:00

Yes merlot - using terms like media circus and PR stunt is critical for starters.

Gonegirl Wed 16-Oct-19 16:47:14

Not saying anymore. Don't want to enter into a disrespectful argument.

Gonegirl Wed 16-Oct-19 16:47:43

Who said that?

suziewoozie Wed 16-Oct-19 16:47:48

Who’s the lowest common denominator GG - the mother?

Gonegirl Wed 16-Oct-19 16:48:01

just out of curiosity

suziewoozie Wed 16-Oct-19 16:48:24

RTFT might be a good start

Gonegirl Wed 16-Oct-19 16:49:17

The people who watch ITV breakfast shows for starters. And follow their emotions without engaging their brains.

Gonegirl Wed 16-Oct-19 16:49:54

don't understand that either. confused again

Gonegirl Wed 16-Oct-19 16:50:33

Of course not the mother.
