Boris Johnson and his lies

The independent think tank UK in a Changing Europe has today found that Johnson's deal would reduce GDP per capita by between 2.3% and 7% over the next decade. This compares with May's deal where the estimate was between 1.9% and 5.5%. They also suggest that a deal would hit public finances by £16bn and £49bn.

Today in parliament Johnson promised that high standards on workers rights an environmental protections will be maintained.

The political declaration can enter UK law but it is only a statement of intent and he can therefore promise the ERG that, if he wins the next election, he will set aside the political declaration and pivot towards deregulation and a sweetheart deal with Trump. The purpose of the ERG is to deregulate at home in order to strike trade deals with the US and emerging markets.

Would someone please explain why he should now be trusted when he has lied throughout the whole of his career. After all, leopards don't change their spots. It would take too long to list all his lies, but here's some, as a reminder:

1. When suspended from the cable car across the Thames, the mechanism apparently failed. Of course, it was deliberately stopped and he claimed it failed for a good photo opportunity.

2. In his manifesto for the London Mayor election he promised that he would ensure that there would be manned ticket offices at every train station. he then agreed to widespread closures in order to fund 24 hour tube trains

3. Also in his manifesto he promised to eradicate rough sleeping - it doubled during his tenure

4. He lied about the reason for proroguing parliament

5. He repeated his lie about the EU regulating the shape of bananas

6. He lied about there being no press when he was at GOS Hospital

Now for the money wasted whilst mayor on vanity projects:

1. Feasibility study into the Garden Bridge - £52 million

2. Cable car £24 million

3. Boris bikes £225 million (original idea Ken Livingstone but BJ implemented it)

4. Water cannon £323,000 - not allowed under UK law, unsold and now scrapped

5. Estuary airport feasibility study £5.2 million

6. Olympic stadium conversion to football pitch for West Ham - £305 million. The club was supposed to contribute £153 million but in the end it only paid £15 million and now pays annual rent of £2.5 million.

7. Routemaster hybrid buses £321.6 million - superseded by the introduction of electric buses. It's USP is now defunct because the doors at the rear "hop on hop off" platforms are closed in moving traffic (and that includes at walking pace)

A few of these projects had small amounts of sponsorship money but most of the costs were funded by the tax payer

Nonnie Await with baited breath the accusations of doctoring!

Nonnie Fri 08-Nov-19 11:37:36

Just seen this about the Russian papers, could be huge if true: twitter.com/nicktolhurst/status/1192536694811168769

Nonnie Fri 08-Nov-19 11:42:28

This is scary: twitter.com/johnsweeneyroar/status/1181259274330214400 worth watching.

Oopsminty Fri 08-Nov-19 11:45:25

What is it with posters and Twitter?

We can all trawl through the mindless drivel and find what fits our agenda.

I just can't be bothered.

growstuff Fri 08-Nov-19 12:05:04

Twitter is little different from other media sources in some respects. There is loads of drivel on there, but it depends how you use it. I "follow" people who have original views. I agree with some of them and I disagree with others. It's obvious who the trolls are and who is just pumping out propaganda.

Twitter (to me) offers an opportunity to interact with people, almost in real time, with people whose views I respect.

growstuff Fri 08-Nov-19 12:05:49

PS. I use views on Twitter to inform my agenda - not the other way round.

Nonnie Fri 08-Nov-19 12:13:50

Oopsminty Fri 08-Nov-19 11:45:25 was that really necessary? Why dig at something you don't follow? I agree with grow you have to discriminate and choose who you follow.

suzied Fri 08-Nov-19 12:43:14

Johnson says the NI can enjoy free movement and the single market - bully for them - so why can't the rest of us?

Nandalot Fri 08-Nov-19 13:26:34

Exactly, Suzied. He called it a wonderful deal. that’s the deal we should have!

MaizieD Fri 08-Nov-19 13:40:20

Good heavens, Ooops.

Where else but on twitter could I find a huge amount of information from lawyers, barristers, trade experts, law experts, economists, MPs, reporters, historians etc. etc. and follow and connect with people who have the same interests as me, or who tweet really quirky and interesting stuff that I'd never have known about from conventional sources?

Twitter is a great resource. It even lets you bypass paywalls from time to time...

Getting rid of the drivel is easy. Don't 'follow' it and block it if it pops up unasked..

Nonnie Fri 08-Nov-19 17:23:08

Another interesting Tweet. boris-johnson-lies.com/ its a long list!

SirChenjin Fri 08-Nov-19 17:36:00

Thanks for sharing that Nonnie - it’s so important that Boris and his lies are shown for what they are

Tell them to call me and I will tell them to throw the form in the bin': Boris Johnson insists Northern Ireland businesses will NOT have to fill out customs paperwork when they send goods to the rest of UK after Brexit as he contradicts Stephen Barclay

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-7664181/Remainer-fury-Boris-Johnson-promises-Northern-Ireland-free-movement.html

The difference between Johnson and the brexit secrtetary Barclay is that Barclay has done his homework and Johnson hasn't. He just lies and lies and lies.

Labaik Fri 08-Nov-19 22:49:17

Johnson says the flooding isn't an 'emergency'. Phew; there was me getting worried with all the helicopters and fire engines roundabout....confused

Health Secretary Matt Hancock has just been asked on BBC Breakfast to explain the discrepancy between Stephen Barclay's statement to the Brexit Select Committee and Boris Johnson's advice to business people in NI.

He could not give any answer and to her credit Naga Munchetti persisted in repeating the question. It was pathetic how Matt Hancock just kept repeating irrelevant piffle and waffle because he could not defend the indefensible.

Nonnie Sat 09-Nov-19 10:54:34

varian I think that's what they all do. They seem to be coached to follow the official script and to ignore straight questions. I am thoroughly fed up of my MP 'liking' and 'retweeting' support for newly selected candidates and saying absolutely nothing for himself. Trying to find out when he will hold a public meeting but he hasn't answered the question.

jura2 Sat 09-Nov-19 12:06:31

Nonnie- it is great to see more and more interviewers just refusing to take 'deflect and attack' as an non-answer to questions.

All politicians, from all sides, should be cut off if they do not reply to que question asked- and asked agai, 3 times. No mercy. Then just cut off if they refuse.

Not a fan of Piers Morgan for sure- but at least he did correct and denounce the dreadful editing of the interview he had with Keir Starmer, and put the record straight.

SirChenjin Sat 09-Nov-19 15:07:38

I’m particularly enjoying the BBC Fact Checks - they’ve done a great job recently of dismantling claims by Johnson, Sturgeon and Abbott (and no don’t others - I’ve just seen those 3) in very easy to understand language. I hope we’re now seeing the dawn of an age where the mainstream media really challenges false claims by politicians

Nonnie Sat 09-Nov-19 16:21:26

Unfortunately the people who need to see the fact checking are the least likely to do so. Whenever I try to reason with a leaver on Twitter I get so much rubbish back and never an answer to a simple question. It really is as if they are either unintelligent or their minds are blocked. After a while they block me because I refused to retaliate to their rudeness. I am pretty sure they believe all the lies.

jura2 Sat 09-Nov-19 16:36:03

No Twitter for me- GN is bad enough ;) got a life to live ...

Nonnie Sat 09-Nov-19 16:48:45

ah Jura you can't choose which posts to read in the same way on GN as you can on Twitter. I choose who to follow and it seems my tweets are interesting as I have a lot of followers who are complete strangers! Yes, I get stupid comments but I can choose to read them or not, answer them or not. Please don't think I don't have a life, I do which is why I don't contribute to so many threads on here. I am selective only post where I can offer support, think I can be useful or where I want to share my opinion. I am not one of those who visits a thread just to say I know nothing about it or just to criticise the OP.

jura2 Sat 09-Nov-19 19:42:58

Sorry Nonnie- I didn't mean you didn't have a life- my comment was tongue and cheek.

Back to Johnson's lies, he promised there would be an enquiry during his campaign- but is refusing to currently. He just can't be trusted on anything:

I've found the fact checking really well done too SirChenjin and it is surely what the journalists should be doing.
