GG Yes, I agree the Euro hit prices in Spain. My DS’s Spanish in- laws said much of the price rises were led by the sudden releasing of cash in pesetas which had been stashed as it was untaxed cash etc. which could not go through the banks.
Also the Euro was never part of the equation for the U.K.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 24-Oct-19 18:07:56

I first lived and worked in Spain in 1982 four years before they joined the EU.

When they adopted the Euro the price increases hit the poorest and the elderly. Prices were “rounded up” far more than in other countries.

(We were in Austria the night they went over to the Euro and if anything they rounded a lot of consumables down)

It is being reported that if there is a general election, Farage will stand against.........................

Johnson!!

Would love that to be true?

GrannyGravy13 Thu 24-Oct-19 18:01:10

growstuff I answered your post of 17.34 when you questioned my post of 17.21.

growstuff Thu 24-Oct-19 17:59:37

And tax the hoteliers who are making an increased profit from paying their workers less.

Ginny42 Thu 24-Oct-19 17:59:30

What was the timescale for those events please GrannyGravy13?

Petra could the price increases have been linked to the state of the £ at the time of your visit?

Not criticism btw. Just trying to understand when you noticed the price rises and the unemployment figures in Spain.

As to the levels of bureaucracy in Spain, it's been an aggravation for many years. It gets Spaniards down too, but it's been that way for a very long time. They make a joke of it.

growstuff Thu 24-Oct-19 17:58:59

Who owns the hotels and restaurants which the tourists use and presumably make a profit?

Cyprus should introduce and enforce a minimum wage.

growstuff Thu 24-Oct-19 17:55:34

Aha! I thought you meant in the UK.

Spain, Portugal and Greece aren't going to leave the EU as a result of Brexit.

Greece should never have been allowed to join the EU and the Eurozone anyway. It had to fiddle its book to be allowed to join and, quite frankly, should have sorted out its tax system first. I'm afraid the chickens came home to roost.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 24-Oct-19 17:54:57

Petra we have close links to the Greek side of Cyprus and the locals cannot get work in the tourist hotel’s as the Eastern European’s work for less. Free movement hasn’t benefited Greece

Labaik Thu 24-Oct-19 17:43:14

Joelsnan; it's 'my' [sort of] thread and I'll whinge if I want to. Go and whinge on your own thread....grin….

petra Thu 24-Oct-19 17:40:12

As GG13 pointed out: the increase in prices. It was very noticeable in Spain/Portugal/ and Greece. I found Greece to be the highest of those 3.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 24-Oct-19 17:38:37

growstuff Spain

growstuff Thu 24-Oct-19 17:34:55

Where was that GrannyGravy? It didn't happen anywhere I've lived.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 24-Oct-19 17:29:42

Blimey Kuenssberg is a bit useless isn’t she?

Whitewavemark2 Thu 24-Oct-19 17:27:14

Anyone trust Johnson?.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 24-Oct-19 17:25:51

Why on earth doesn’t Johnson just get on with the bill?

He’s knows that the opposition is willing to work with him on the time table.

Instead of that we have this nonsense of trying for a GE

GracesGranMK3 Thu 24-Oct-19 17:25:22

Thanks Grandad. This seems a very convoluted decision from Johnson.

On my phone "Boris Johnson has said he will give MPs more time to debate the Brexit deal, but only if they agree to a 12 December general election"

It sounds a bit like hid g the country to ransom!

GrannyGravy13 Thu 24-Oct-19 17:21:16

growstuff No I saw prices virtually double overnight, local youngsters put out of work due to “free movement of labour”, and double the amount of bureaucracy.

Joelsnan Thu 24-Oct-19 17:19:40

Labiak
Can’t you post something other than winging that the thread content didn’t meet with your expectations.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 24-Oct-19 17:16:07

Johnson calling for an election, “to give MPs more time for the bill”

Johnson should be told to sod off.

He should not be allowed to dictate to parliament.

Labaik Thu 24-Oct-19 17:03:31

By the way, I've been out all afternoon and came onto this thread to catch up on what's been happening, but have had to plough my way through a lot of pro Brexit whinging [sp] posts....

growstuff Thu 24-Oct-19 17:01:41

Interesting GrannyGravy that you must have experienced some of the benefits of the EU.

Labaik Thu 24-Oct-19 17:00:28

Think Johnson is doing everything he can to avoid having to meet up with Sarah Wollaston [is it 3 meetingswith her he's cancelled/avoided now?]. It's called 'doing a Priti Pattel I believe. And the Conservatives are saying that Johnsons Brexit bill has been passed, not that it's just made it to a second reading.

growstuff Thu 24-Oct-19 16:53:41

lemongrove You're being completely disingenuous. I do not believe for one moment that every single poll and survey is wrong. Of course there is a margin of error and it depends how the polls were conducted, but there have been enough of them to show without any shadow of a doubt that the general picture is correct.

I'm actually quite relieved that so many of the posters on GN can't be described as grumpy and reactionary old git stereotypes.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 24-Oct-19 16:33:17

Well in our family 5 AC and partners voted leave 4 have degrees, 9 have A levels or equivalent, 1 speaks 3 languages fluently, 1 speaks 2 fluently and 2 can get by in 2 languages other than English.

Eldest has lived and worked worldwide.

One started their schooling in a Country in Europe that at the time was not a member of the EU.

I have lived and worked in Europe, and can get by in 2 European languages other than English.

We all voted leave, as did Mr. Gravy.
