Who is running this country?

If I can remember that far back, I seem to remember one of the objections to being in the EU was of being governed by the unelected bureaucrats of Brussels, or some such phrase.
How do we feel about the “unelected” of the U.K?
I do wonder who is in charge when I read things like this in this morning’s paper
Reports of Dominic Cummings angrily banging his fist on a table during a meeting between the Prime Minister and Jeremy Corbyn surfaced soon after the pair met yesterday in an attempt to reach a compromise over the Withdrawal Agreement Bill (WAB)
It was alleged that when Mr Johnson asked the Opposition leader how long it would take to agree a new timetable – after the programme motion calling for his Brexit deal to be passed in three days was voted down on Tuesday night – an irate Cummings interjected: “No!”

I believe it was Margaret Thatcher who said “Advisers advise, ministers decide” - presumable including Prime Ministers hmm

Kept trying to think who Cummings reminds me of...
Yup, Alastair Campbell. The behind the throne powers these 'advisers' wield is mind-boggling (and yes I have been at Campbell's briefings so am familiar with the tactics). I imagine Cummings' briefings are much the same....

At the end of this mess maybe a statue in parliament Square of Bercow could be organised. Mind you it'll only be a small one gringringrin

absthame Thu 24-Oct-19 14:36:43

Selsey99 perhaps you can inform us about the rules by which the Speaker makes Parliament follow due process and then tell us in detail which rules he's breaking. Facts not hyperbole please.

MaizieD Thu 24-Oct-19 15:45:09

Oh yes, please do, Selsey99.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 24-Oct-19 15:50:23

railman

Excellent!!

CarlyD7 Thu 24-Oct-19 16:07:37

maddyone Yes, it's very possible that the Russians are directing what Boris is doing just as they are directing what Trump is doing in the USA (through the billions of $$ he borrowed from Russian banks when US banks refused to bail him out of impending bankrupcy yet again). Boris is a weak man with no morals that I've ever seen a trace of - could be bribery; could be blackmail; or simply the manipulation of his fragile toddler ego ("So you've always wanted to be Prime Minister? Then, just do as I say ... ")

catta5 Thu 24-Oct-19 17:19:09

whoever is Pm will not be able to have any deal to enable us to leave the EU because the remainers will ensure we do not, so what the Pm says or does will be instantly rejected . When the Pm said i have a new deal that Eu has accepted before it had been shown or discussed the remainers said we will not accept it!!!.

I thought Bercow was following the rules, even if some of them are rather ancient.

I have visions of him poring through ancient books and scrolls every night, with Sally complaining that his dinner's getting cold and she feels neglected.

maddyone Thu 24-Oct-19 17:58:01

Oh dear Carly, swallowed it hook, line and sinker haven’t you?

Callistemon Thu 24-Oct-19 17:58:30

I can see them but can't hear them, railman

perhaps just as well.

maddyone Thu 24-Oct-19 17:59:04

I’ve never heard such complete and utter twaddle.

maddyone Thu 24-Oct-19 17:59:21

That was to Carly.

Callistemon Thu 24-Oct-19 18:01:14

I thought it was to my post of 17:57:20 maddyone which I thought was a fair enough response

Alistair Campbell & Dominic Cummings. Peas in the same pod. The power behind ‘the throne’?

MaizieD Thu 24-Oct-19 18:54:50

Alistair Campbell didn't have the contempt for Parliament that Cummings has.

varian Thu 24-Oct-19 19:05:53

Nor did he have the Russian connection

Dinahmo Thu 24-Oct-19 22:21:19

Thank God (if she exists) for Bercow.

Now that he's no longer the power behind the throne Alistair Campbell comes over as a sensible man and no longer a bully.

Urmstongran Thu 24-Oct-19 23:01:33

Thank God (if she exists). Love that after all this time the ‘right on’ saying is still around with the feministas Dinahmo - such a 70’s cliche!

mcem Thu 24-Oct-19 23:34:53

selsey that, I'm sad to say, was a whole lot of unfounded and unjustified gibberish!

Ginny42 Fri 25-Oct-19 00:04:21

You are quite wrong about Bercow Selsey99 and unnecessarily rude to me. He has a very wide knowledge of procedure in the HoC, but the clerks who occupy the seats directly in front of him are there to advise the speaker on procedural matters and you often see him conferring with them. They're hardly likely to all four get things wrong are they? When he is keeping the house in order he is doing his job. I can't think of another person who could have kept the House in order so successfully in the past 3 years.

The reason some MPs get so cross with him is precisely because he's sticking to the rules.
