Considering voting Labour?

I probably will - at the moment it looks as though they have the best chance here of kicking the sitting Tory out.

All parties make promises they do not keep.

Whether Corbyn is the greatest leader or not I could not vote for anyone who propped BJ up. I was reminded last evening of BJ's being complicit in trying to get someone beaten up as a favour to a friend. Sigh.

You may not be aware of this Annie - I see you seem to be losing your memory a little. The party is called the "LABOUR" party - but no party has gone into detail yet. I watch with interest to see what they all say and how truthful those in the know consider ALL of them to be.

It will be interesting to see just how each party is intending to fund such things once the figures have been published - if all parties do, of course.

If we want to stay in the EU we should vote for whichever party will win against a Tory in our constituency rather than for policies. We all know they are trying to outbid each other and that not everything they promise will happen. They can be voted out in just over 4 years but Brexit is forever. Vote tactically.

I am interested to know how they will make private Landlords provide affordable rents when there is a housing shortage. Surely they will just sell off their properties and it will be even harder to find somewhere to rent. We have free prescriptions anyway. I'm not sure about the 10 hour minimum work contracts either surely that will then become the norm with loads of people having only 10 hours?

Well, six weeks today we shall all know who will be living in number 10!

I believe I and some of my friends go back much further than most of the messages here. At one time or another I have voted for all the three main parties. As we very oldies spent a lot of our childhood mainly in London during WW2 there is no way I could vote for Labour while Corbyn is there as I remember when he wanted to get rid of some of our defences No way would I vote for someone who wanted me to sit defenceless and wait to be finished off. I know he has supposedly changed this view but he can always change it again. I am not Jewish but think the views of some of the Labour Party are racist.

Don't know if you mentioned it, but the scrapping of Universal Credit belongs to the commitments.

It has caused untold suffering. In Jeremy's constituency alone 40 of kids live in poverty. and some parents have been forced into sex work and destitution with the UC situation.

I feel the Tories have definitely treated many many millions as less than human. Compassion needs to return to our society. It has been absent for far too long.

Urmstongran if you are working on a zero hours contract and you are given no work, you still have to pay the rent and buy food for your children. You may go to a food bank but your eldest needs new shoes. Someone offers you the chance to make enough for the shoes just by having sex with a couple of men. Chances are you would do it. It's not a question of deciding to take up sex work. It's a question of providing for your family (Have you seen I Daniel Blake?)

Private landlords, you cannot make them do anything, the only way a future government can improve standards is to close down the bad ones or take them over, there should be a minimum standard.

If they were serious that is what would happen, it would take many billions to do it and not even Corbyn has the guts to do that.

Davidhs If that were true people would still be living in unsafe properties. There are regulations about safety standards for rented properties no reason there shouldn't be other standards.

Kittylester, page 1. I don’t remember the labour government of post war Britain. They were the only truly left wing government, introducing our much loved NHS, amongst other wonderful social policies.

The big problem with Labours plans on Brexit are they are not allowing us to leave. Labour say they will agree a realistic leave option which will include staying in Single Market, and staying in Customs Union. That is not leaving EU as we would not be able to do trade deals with other countries not aligned to EU. Or we could remain. So that is remain or remain then! That won't wash with many traditional Labour voters. My FiL has voted Labour for all of his life, and he has voted in every election he was eligible to vote in, but says he can't vote for this. He is considering voting Brexit Party if they field a candidate in his constituency. If not he says he won't vote for first time in his life. He is 83.

Private landlords. I went to a rent tribunal in the late 1960s. We had one storage heater and the place was full of beetles. The gas geyser was condemned by the Gas Board as it was deemed unsafe as it was Edwardian. I think rent tribunals should be reinstated to set a fair rent for an approved property.

More recently we were flooded out and had to find private rented for a period of 6 months. It was unclean, none of the provided appliances worked and freezing cold. Fortunately the insurance was paying the rent.

In regards to the shortfalls of private rented housing, the only way those problems will be solved is to launch a large-scale council house building program. That will have to be carried out in much the same way that the 1945 Labour government of Clement Attlee undertook such building to ensure all families had a safe secure home no matter what their income.

Such a program would undermine and eventually collapse the private letting market which in the eyes of many would be no bad thing.

McDonnell is going to bring in legislation to make all land lords sell their properties to tenants at below market value if they have lived in the property for more than 4 years and property will be discounted more the longer tenants have lived there. A bit like Thatchers Right to Buy Scheme. Problem with this legislation he wants to bring in is that it does not punish slum Land Lords as no one want to stay long in slum properties. It hits good Land Lords as tenants stay longer in good quality and properly maintained homes. In the past we have had tenants who stayed for over eight years until they saved up enough for their own deposit. We have been invited to tenants weddings and we always buy any babies a M&S gift card if they are born in any of our houses but we don't want to sell our houses and definitely not for discounted rates. We son't want to sell our Royal Mail shares either. Corbyn is saying we will be forced to sell them to Labour government at under market rates so he can re-nationalise. This is politics of envy, stealing from some to give to others.

ayse all btl properties must have a valid gas certificate. If tis unfit for human hey are sub standard why would you agree to rent it and move in? You can get a council inspection if it is unfit for human habitation as the one you are staying in sounds like it is. Move somewhere nicer.

I have 6 btl properties and would live in any one of them myself. They are maintained to a high standard and any reported issues dealt with immediately. I would also be happy for any council to do an inspection of any of them as I know they would all pass any inspection. If a property is not nice when you look around why would you move into it? Look for a nicer property.
