His attitude sums up the arrogance and total disregard for ‘ordinary people’ that is typical of this government.
He should resign, and 20 years ago he would have had to. The fact that people make excuses for him shows how unpleasant the attitude of so many in this this country has become.
Of course he shouldn’t have said it ( just thought it.)
A Spanish resident who lived on the 13th floor and who roused all the neighbours when he saw smoke said on radio 4 Recently that that they ( neighbours) said advice from the LFS was to stay put, but he said that it just seemed common sense to him to leave a building if you could do so safely. When outside, much later on, he rang some neighbours, and some then did come down from their flats.Others didn’t unfortunately.
As Doodledog has pointed out one of the worst things about this is the fact that politicians now get away with things that, at one time would have been career ending. And still so many voters in this country think that politicians like Mogg care for and represent them which baffles me. And he still hasn't apologised in parliament for the things he said about that doctor despite other politicians calling for a formal apology from him. The illegal proroguing of parliament saved him from having to do that .
Quite right, lemongrove. And a lot of us thought it as well. As did a lot of people who managed to escape. Many stories of people who defied the 'stay put' advice.
I recall one of the stories from 9/11. A British firm,(?) or firm with British management were in the 2nd tower before it had been hit. They were told to get out.
The informed them that the Emergency Services told them to stay.
But he insisted and they all got out.
Human nature. Some of us are more inclined to act on own devices
None of this helps the poor residents of Grenfell.
It was just horrific and Jacob Rees-Mogg's comment was crass to say the least.
He's apologised. Can't do anything else about it now.
Well yes, it was a bit of a tactless thing to say, but he does have a point about it being common sense to leave a burning building. Didn't we all think about what we would have done in those circumstances, and then come to the conclusion that we would have left, sharpish?
He has apologised, but of course he was correct.
More lives would have been saved if residents had left immediately. The fire service admitted that, didn't they?
Of course some people just love any chance to have a go at JRM.
He has probably never even been in a high rise flat but no excuse or apology is acceptable in my eyes. He is a disgrace. I can’t stand his arrogance or his total air of entitlement.
I suppose if a lot of the residents of Grenfell had decided to leave their flats and many had died because of the crush on the stairs JRM would now be berating them for not doing what the Fire brigade said. He should bear in mind the old adage- "Never speak ill of the dead". Particularly when the leader of the political party you support was responsible for the huge cuts to funding for the LFB that meant they didn't even have the equipment to deal with a fire in a tower block. Here's Boris telling the London Assembly questioning his cuts to "Get Stuffed". www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=39&v=UN3e-aYUusc
All of the big buildings I have worked in (residential homes, offices, multi storey places) have had a 'stay put' policy due to having fire doors, which we are assured can take up to 2 hours (I think) to burn through.
DH has travelled a lot during his working life and he has always said, ignore any advice to stay put, get up and get out, mainly he is talking on airlines, but a few years a go we read a very interesting book that says you should alwaya do this, get moving and get out. Obviously sometimes this will be a bad idea and there will be fatal results, but compared with the lives it will save, the deaths will be few.
