Well yes, it was a bit of a tactless thing to say, but he does have a point about it being common sense to leave a burning building. Didn't we all think about what we would have done in those circumstances, and then come to the conclusion that we would have left, sharpish?

He has apologised, but of course he was correct.

More lives would have been saved if residents had left immediately. The fire service admitted that, didn't they?

Quite right, lemongrove. And a lot of us thought it as well. As did a lot of people who managed to escape. Many stories of people who defied the 'stay put' advice.

I recall one of the stories from 9/11. A British firm,(?) or firm with British management were in the 2nd tower before it had been hit. They were told to get out.

The informed them that the Emergency Services told them to stay.

But he insisted and they all got out.

None of this helps the poor residents of Grenfell.

It was just horrific and Jacob Rees-Mogg's comment was crass to say the least.

He's apologised. Can't do anything else about it now.

As Doodledog has pointed out one of the worst things about this is the fact that politicians now get away with things that, at one time would have been career ending. And still so many voters in this country think that politicians like Mogg care for and represent them which baffles me. And he still hasn't apologised in parliament for the things he said about that doctor despite other politicians calling for a formal apology from him. The illegal proroguing of parliament saved him from having to do that .

Of course he shouldn’t have said it ( just thought it.)

His attitude sums up the arrogance and total disregard for ‘ordinary people’ that is typical of this government.

He should resign, and 20 years ago he would have had to. The fact that people make excuses for him shows how unpleasant the attitude of so many in this this country has become.

It's ok for him, he would never have to live in a tower block. I imagine his idea of any tower would be of the ivory variety.

Did you see that he told LBC that Grenfell residents lacked common sense when they did what the fire service told them to do and stayed in their flat.
