Any thoughts on John McDonnell 's proposal to to compensate waspi women to the tune of £58 bn?

growstuff Sun 24-Nov-19 09:13:57

No Pamela he would get the money from the Bank of England. Most of it would be returned to the Treasury through taxation on the money itself as it's spent.

growstuff Sun 24-Nov-19 09:15:46

Yehbutnobut The post WW2 government understood Keynes.

Japan currently has a national debt greater than its GDP, but it's not "bankrupt".

mcem Sun 24-Nov-19 09:17:20

Pamela do you believe that it's a straight comparison?
Either a huge injustice is put right or landlords save on CGT.
A bit simplistic don't you think? As growstuff has explained, managing the economy is not the same as balancing the household budget. The £58 bn would be a boost to the economy, not a drain on it.

mosaicwarts Sun 24-Nov-19 09:32:30

As a WASPI person, I'll be glad of any help that is offered. I havent' read either Manifesto yet, reading later today to see which offers the best future smile

Tooting29 Sun 24-Nov-19 09:38:26

I am a WASPI woman, so I have a vested interested, we shall see. I am a little cynical why now, and why not in the manifesto.

PamelaJ1 Sun 24-Nov-19 09:44:33

mcem,
Of course it’s simplistic.
I was being a little sarcastic, tongue in cheek, whatever.
Thank you for putting me right though.
When he opens up the chance for me to return to education I had better choose economics.?

growstuff Sun 24-Nov-19 09:49:48

I doubt very much whether the education system would teach you Keynesian economics, unless you studied A level Economics. The whole country has been brainwashed for decades into believing that the national economy is like a household budget, when it isn't.

PS. I don't understand what selling your btl property would have to do with compensating WASPI women.

PamelaJ1 Sun 24-Nov-19 09:54:02

Growstuff,
As we were sitting on the sofa and heard the news that WASPI women were going to be compensated for the loss of their pension my husband said.
“Well we can use that to pay for the increase in CGT that he’s introducing”
That’s how deep we are in this house.

Sar53 Sun 24-Nov-19 09:58:04

JC is not doing well in the polls, this is just another 'bribe to get ladies of a certain age to vote labour. Why was this not in the manifesto ?
I am a WASPI women born in 1953 but this would not make me change my mind about whom I vote for.

mcem Sun 24-Nov-19 10:03:06

Didn't Philip Hammond propose radical changes to cgt (which he didn't have the chance to implement)?
Not simply a new LP tax grab.

Jane10 Sun 24-Nov-19 10:07:34

I lost out too by a matter of weeks. Sad to say I think this is just another of politicians of all parties promising the moon if only we'd vote for them.

growstuff Sun 24-Nov-19 10:12:42

What did you actually lose by a matter of weeks? Was there a "cliff edge" somewhere?

Whitewavemark2 Sun 24-Nov-19 10:14:00

If it has been costed, and it has, then what can you lose by voting for your pension?

Gypsyqueen13 Sun 24-Nov-19 10:14:03

I am a WASPI but what Corbyn is promising us just confirms how desperate he is to get votes. The pension system as it was was not sustainable. If Labour get back in to power the country will be back in the same position as it was before Conservatives were voted back in. I am seriously concerned for our country - God knows where this will end.

growstuff Sun 24-Nov-19 10:18:16

Lucky you Pamela to be in the position where you have to pay more CGT. Sorry, but it doesn't work like that. Your husband doesn't appear to know how the Treasury works.

Jane10 Sun 24-Nov-19 10:20:54

growstuff 'by matter of weeks', if I'd been born a few weeks earlier I'd have been under the threshold and would have been able to get my state pension at 60. If they had even tapered it off rather that changed it to the straight 6 years later that might have helped.
Jeremy, if you're reading this, I'm still not going to vote for this latest bribe!

eazybee Sun 24-Nov-19 10:21:29

I could never understand why men were expected to work until sixty-five and women allowed to retire aged sixty. The balance has now been addressed, in the name of equality; it works both ways.
I don't have much sympathy for women who failed to keep up to date with the proposed changes; the information was out there for years in advance. All I would advocate is that they should be allowed to work until sixty-five to make up their pension.

joesdadnick Sun 24-Nov-19 10:23:26

Labour will go after your private pension pots to pay this. Twice in my life I have seen Labour fiscal policies near bankrupt this country, from Wilson/Callaghan in the 70s with Blair/Brown in the noughties, We will end up worse than Greece did, As most people say, its all pie-in-the sky socialist thinking

Solonge Sun 24-Nov-19 10:24:41

The money will come from closing tax loopholes. Do you know that companies like Boots, Nero’s, Amazon pay no UK tax at all? Do you know that newspapers owned by non Dom’s like Murdoch, the Barclay brothers etc...all the right wing papers that manipulate the electorate....pay no UK tax. If you look at Scandinavia they pay relatively high taxes but have superb education, child care for all, healthcare, elderly care, libraries, police, fire services...and on and on....no disputes because though taxes are high...no one is trying to cheat the system because they have the best public services in the world. Tax is not a four letter word. When I hear parties talking about cutting tax, it reminds me of the US....where everyone wants to look after themselves. Tax is what separates civilised societies from non civilised societies. More homeless people have died on our streets under the present government than under any other modern government. I’m a nurse and qualified in 1978, the NHS is dying. Mainly due to mismanagement. Do you know that when the NHS wants to buy anything, from cleaning products to equipment, they have to use the ‘preferred suppliers’ chosen by .....the government. The costs are always far more expensive than shopping around...the companies often charge four times the cost of a product....that helps to ensure the NHS has no money. Contracts are all given to private companies....costing millions more than using NHS employed staff. Proper management of a country, not giving your wealthy pals tax cuts and NHS contracts.....that’s how Labour will afford to fund the WASPI women....and I’m not a labour voter....I will vote tactically to replace this government....anyone better than those sitting at present.

growstuff Sun 24-Nov-19 10:25:01

The idea that we'll be heading for some kind of Armageddon if Labour gets into government is just laughable.

PS. I'm not a Corbyn fan nor a Labour supporter, but this kind of hysteria is ridiculous.

PPS. I'm a WASPI woman. According to the report I read, I'd be one who received the maximum amount (just over £30,000) minus 20% income tax, because of my date of birth. I actually don't think it should be paid as a lump sum to all women, but it's nothing to do with affordability. The arguments being thrown around are just silly.

It would be much better and fairer to revert to the old rules about working and receiving tax credits for part-time working for over 60s (men and women) and stopping all the loopholes on pensions, such as tax relief on contributions.

mcem Sun 24-Nov-19 10:25:44

Watching Jo Swinson on AM show.
She is saying that the Ombudsman may well find in favour of waspi women and order compensation.
If (god forbid) Bojo is pm then he'll have to find the cash, won't he?
Won't help his popularity if he fights that decision but then it won't matter to him as long as he gets what he wants.

growstuff Sun 24-Nov-19 10:26:03

joesdadnick A country which issues its own sovereign currency CAN'T go bankrupt. Scaremongering, I'm afraid.

growstuff Sun 24-Nov-19 10:27:13

We will never end up like Greece because the Greeks have a culture of avoiding taxes, the Greek economy is a basket case and is tied to the Euro.

Cp43 Sun 24-Nov-19 10:27:55

I was lucky I got mine before cut off. But I know a couple of women who were not as lucky. They have no income to speak of, one had to leave work and is a carer for her mum which sadly won’t be for much longer, so god knows how she will manage. No one wants to employ a middle age woman who is out of the loop. Disgraceful.

Abuelana Sun 24-Nov-19 10:28:24

Wonder where the money will come from and where did it all go? Why was our pension pot never topped up ?
I suffered the same with Navy pension deferred to 60 and not paid at 55
